How To Use Automation On Metal Guitars And Bass

Joel Wanasek shows you how automation brings your mix to life with subtle changes to the levels of guitars and bass during each section of the song (using the raw multi-tracks for "Is There Anybody Out There" by Machine Head).
He uses Cubase, but the same principles apply in any DAW - just look up automation in the help files for your DAW of choice.

NAIL THE MIX is an online mixing school created by Joey Sturgis, Joel Wanasek and Eyal Levi - the guys who produced bands like TDWP, Chelsea Grin, Blessthefall, Machine Head, Monuments, Miss May I, Of Mice & Men, Reflections, Born Of Osiris, Asking Alexandria and dozens more of this generation's best metal bands.
Every month, NAIL THE MIX members get exclusive access to the REAL MULTI-TRACK SESSIONS from a REAL ALBUM, and a 6-8 hour live streaming class from the producer who mixed it. These are the actual sessions by bands like Gojira, Meshuggah, Periphery, Papa Roach, Machine Head, Bring Me The Horizon, A Day To Remember and more - and NTM is the only place in the world you'll get access to them!

I find more than guitars I need to automate keyboard and other sound effect type tracks especially when the octaves change

Man I NEED to get my drums to have this much body and breathing room and space in the mix! I have punch in the low end and clarity in the high end but they still sound smaller than i'd like. But damn, these drums just breathe AND punch!

Oddly enough, I used exact same approach automating rithm and bass tracks pure instinctively, to make songs breathe and now you are proving I was right. Feels Great!

Usually if you right click a setting it’ll say “show automation” and you can work on it from there

You guys should do a video on that, "in this week's episode, we run our mix through a MetalZone". Just get the Wampler moded one though. Wouldn't want to "color" the mix too much. :0
