How To Use Automation On Metal Guitars And Bass
Joel Wanasek shows you how automation brings your mix to life with subtle changes to the levels of guitars and bass during each section of the song (using the raw multi-tracks for "Is There Anybody Out There" by Machine Head).
He uses Cubase, but the same principles apply in any DAW - just look up automation in the help files for your DAW of choice.

I find more than guitars I need to automate keyboard and other sound effect type tracks especially when the octaves change
And I love the ending, so real

This is PURE GOLD!!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. 🤓👍
9:32 "cool bass part" *Straight sixteenth notes on two notes*
Insanely helpful.
Great video Joel!!! Do you use something else in automation like eq, reverb etc...?
Thanks man, helped a lot! Suscribed ;)
Man I NEED to get my drums to have this much body and breathing room and space in the mix! I have punch in the low end and clarity in the high end but they still sound smaller than i'd like. But damn, these drums just breathe AND punch!
Oddly enough, I used exact same approach automating rithm and bass tracks pure instinctively, to make songs breathe and now you are proving I was right. Feels Great!
Were you pushing the bass grit into a limiter on a bass buss?
How do you do the intro
Why is the basstrack in stereo ?
How to use automation to change effects. For e.g. i want to change from clean to djenty tone automatically. Can u make a video
I've been wanting to do this on Ableton 10 but I still don't know how to do automation. I'm teaching myself but I need help with that.

Usually if you right click a setting it’ll say “show automation” and you can work on it from there
This song sounds like thunder

You guys should do a video on that, "in this week's episode, we run our mix through a MetalZone". Just get the Wampler moded one though. Wouldn't want to "color" the mix too much. :0
this song sounds better at 1.25x speed 😅
Yikes. Great lesson though😛
I used to be biggest machine head fab, then they wanted to go radio, and now it's fuck gay
16:50 Just put autotune there. Christ...
