Totally makes sense about not going in circles as I’ve seen in other videos. Stands to reason rubbing against the blade would dull it. Thank you for posting this from an ole pro with all his wisdom!

This was a great little learning stop on the life of a man working with tools and leather. It would be great to see more of these tips and tricks, please revisit the shop in other areas.

i am 63 and live in the UK, just getting into leather work and do not have enough years left to gain experience. Your videos pass on to others some of that expertise you have gained over the years, the videos are informative, very well done and sometimes in a light hearted way as not to be boring. I've got 10 years on you Paul, but for 7 years before I was drafted I had the pleasure of actually tooling leather and making saddles. That was then and now my hands cramp just looking at Denny's work, the shop I worked in gone, my memories of how to do it very faded, Tandy's closed. So nice to know Springfield Leather is here to carry on. They're over a thousand miles from where it all started for me but I'm thinking I'll pay them a visit sooner rather than later. I can smell the sent of leather now.

I covered my plywood cutting table with those stick on floor tiles, because cutting a long straight line sometimes my knife would get down into the wood and would try to follow the grain of the wood. I cut off a little once and had to start over as I was cutting a straight edge for my strap cutter with a 6 foot ruler. I got tired of fighting the table. The guys are right, the head knife with just a little practice is better than any other knife I've used and I make knives. I use 8,000 grit diamond compound for stropping and it works great.

A great piece of learning from two Gentlemen with a lot of experience. Listen and learn.

Got to try this out. I have 2 head knives and they just hang on my wall cuz I've never been able to get them good and sharp.

I don't have problems skiving a tough piece of leather as shown in this video. What I would like to see trimmed is a softer piece of leather. As a book binder I would love to see a leather worker pair a thinner more malleable piece of leather.

Nice video. Be careful, a head knife and buffer can be a bad combo. The edges catch easy where the blade curves and grabs the buffing wheel. I made the one in my profile pic and experienced it myself. Lucky I didn't get cut.

Is there a difference in a head knife and a round knife

I've heard it said that "head knives are not round" which led me to believe that a round knife should be in the form of a semi circle, but I've seen some knives advertised as round knives that were not that way, so maybe it's just two terms for the same thing.

Aw, well, just leave it to the ol' guys to work things out using nothing but ....... uh, what was that term again??? ...... Oh, yeah, common SENSE!! We seem to have lost our "challenge" factor somewhere in this hi-tech electronic age we are stuck in nowadays. I just took up leather work as one of the hobbies that I tried 50 some odd years ago and didn't have the wherewithal or the patience to stick with it. Now that I have attained true "knowledge" and have reached my "golden years", I am expected to act and talk like I know what I am talking about. (some of my friends tell me that I have simply honed my warped mind into such a fine edge that I appear to know what I am talking about.) Anyway, nothing against Tandy Leather Co., but I enjoy conjuring up designs in my head and then trying them out on a chunk of leather and have been making a few items like tote bags, little pouches to keep my fine hand tools in, and, lately, I just finished my idea of what MY "Possibles" bag would look like if I had made it for me in MY tribe 200 years ago. It is simple and not very ornate but I have been unornamented for most of my life anyhow so what's to change??? I just got a package today in the mail with 4 fine looking Rocky Mtn. sheep skins from which I hope to make a long sleeved western style "buckskin" shirt. I am on the lookout for a shirt that fits me comfortably and is of the general style that I want my shirt to be, either a pullover or a button front, I haven't decided yet. I have plenty of deer antler from which to cut buttons if I go with a button front or a modified Henley with lace up front. I guess I will know it when I see it .....
