How to Use an HSI | Horizontal Situation Indicator | IFR Instruments

Not many of us learn how to use an HSI if we've trained on more traditional instruments. A Horizontal Situation Indicator combines the functions of a directional gyro and VOR to provide greater situational awareness in a single instrument.

I use digital HSIs (G5 and Aspen depending on the plane). It auto sets the HSI needle but it’s very easy to get complacent, especially with multiple approaches. Even though it does it on its own, it’s important to still verify the TTTTT with each waypoint. I honk manual HSIs are better for training for this reason - your law of primacy is engrained to do it every time.

Great graphics as usual. For situational awareness, think you want to fly towards the (station's) 230 degrees radial , thus TO 230, or away on the 050 degree radial outbound from the station, thus FROM 050. Thanks for sharing.

I agree. Unless there’s some intrinsic reason to fly on the “from” radial. I was always taught to fly “To” a radial but report to ATC which radial you are on.

@@willburrito9710Interesting that you were taught that way. For most students VOR nav is confusing, but the "Toward and From radial" works for me.

I can’t get a license (medical) but I find the HSI to be really intuitive in MSFS. I was so intrigued by it that I bought a used non-flightworthy one just to take it apart to see how it worked. So many gears and resolvers! I might try hooking it up to MSFS and see if I can get it to work.

Can you make a follow on with using the hsi with gps waypoints?

You should be able to toggle the HSI between Nav and GPS mode by pressing the CDI “soft” key on your GPS. On the gps display, this would show a green “GPS” in the bottom left indicating that the HSI is reflecting your GPS route. If “NAV” is displayed on the bottom left instead, this means your HSI is taking information from your NAV radio -your NAV frequency, hence the name nav.

why for the traditional VOR in this example, why cant you just set the VOR on a FROM indication radial 050. Instead of doing it backwards?
