How to use Affinity Publisher to print a zine from home

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I got a question from a viewer asking how use Affinity Publisher to print a book or zine layout from a personal printer.
The concept is normally complicated, but Affinity Publisher makes it super simple, and I show you how in this video.

    Great video but you left out the final step... printing! If you are printing on a home printer that only prints on one side of the paper then you need to change a couple settings in the Print dialog box. Under "Range and Scale" set the "Range" to "Odd pages" and set "Paper Handling" to "Odd Only". After printing all the "Odd" pages, flip the page stack over and put them back in the printer. Now change the print settings to "Even pages". Remember you need to make this change in two places, under "Range and Scale" and under "Print Handling". Now hit print and the printer will print the other side of the pages.

    I left that out a bit on purpose because print dialogs are vastly different, between operating systems, and even certain printer dialog boxes. But yes, you are correct.

    Glad you enjoyed it. You can convert fonts to curves when exporting as PDF. When you’re in the export dialog box, look for the MORE button at the bottom. Scroll through the settings and there will be settings for typography, one of which being convert to curves.

    Yeah I had a similar problem to Paul. Perhaps I need to put page numbers on to simplify the process!! I just like to make little home made booklets and journals - and as a designer from many years back, I am a perfectionist! Affinity is also a super 'simple' way of doing things - ex adobe user!

  • @DaveConrey

    @DaveConrey

    You could also put page numbers on for the design process, and once you have it perfected, remove the page numbers from the master, if you don’t want them visible.

    Terry Brisley technically it should, but I would do a test print first to make sure, and be flexible with slight shifting of the image, especially on the earlier or late pages in the publication.

    Hi Dave, thanks for your very helpful videos. I'm having trouble setting up a simple style pallete for my magazine. (I've been using Indesign for years but thought I'd try using Affinity publisher because on my brand new imac, Indesign is so incredibly slow, although I have a very fast broadband speed.) Could you do a short video on how to set up a style pallet please? HELP!

  • @DaveConrey

    If you are printing from your own printer, then yes. That’s what you do. If you are sending to a print shop, then design in A5 and they will manage the pagination for you.

The first page to be printed, after following these instructions wants to put the front cover (page 1) and page 4 together, side by side. What's happening??!

    I don't know if you experienced this, but after following your steps, my pagination for an eight-page booklet was somehow [1/blank], [blank/2], [3/8], [7/4], [5/6] for a total of five images. It's not only wrong, but super frustrating and confusing.

    So the # isn’t really a #, but a symbol designed for inserting a page number onto the page. I placed it into a master page, and moved it around within the master page, but it won’t be readily available to move on one of the regular pages ( I have a new video for that too). I wish I could help further, but it’s tough without seeing what you’re seeing

    Depends on the complexity of printer. If it has the ability to print double-sided, then you should be good, but if not, I recommend feeding single sheets at a time and flipping.
