Ohhhhh.... I had it all correct, right up to the part where you use leverage with the device itself. I just pulled straight up and broke the corkscrew

Is it just me or did he put the screw in at an angle, and I could hear the worm end scraping against the bottle? At 1:01 into the clip? That's just what I want in my wine - bits of broken glass.

The worm didn't hit the glass. That was just the sound of the metal against the cork.
