Even though you don't know the difference between a transit a level and a rotary laser the manufacturer does and you can read so it's not ignorance you are anass

I'm a retired carpenter. We used transits for so many different things. Besides grading, we used them to build decks. To determine the length of our posts we'd shoot the top of the ledger and the top of the post base bracket on top of the piers. A little simple math and we could cut every post and the beam notches before we stood them up. When installing kitchens in old houses we'd use a transit to establish level lines on the walls so we could shim and trim the cabinets to account for the sloping floors. We also used a transit when hanging suspended ceilings to get a level line for the wall angles. And on and on. Transits are just about the handiest layout tool you can have.

I've been wanting one of these for a few years now ...anybody owe me any money on here?

Good morning Brock. I personally have always wondered how these Lazer transits worked. I've seen them used a hundred times but never asked exactly how it functions. This was definitely very helpful and confirmed that I understood how these work without ever using one before. Thank you for taking the time to explain this in such a concise manner!

I walk around with the grade stick and a can of orange paint and make a mark that says up 2 or down 4 or whatever the stick reads and do that all over the pad or work area. Then you can see it from the operator seat and know where to shave or fill. That’s the easiest way when working alone.

There is a creative way of attaching the receiver to the tractor so you don’t have to get in and out and can still use the transit level while driving the tractor. I’ve seen this done but not done it myself.

Nice video Brock. I bought the he Johnson version in late 2021. It’s a little less expensive, I think I paid between $400-$500 at the time. I definitely like your receiver better. Only complaint with mine is how sensitive the receiver is. It’s impossible to find perfect level. Always a hair high or a hair low. I might give your receiver a try and see how it does.

I could use one of those! I'm enlarging my parking area so I have room to turn trailers around. Something like that would be great to allow me to grade properly for drainage. There you go again, costing me money! 🤣

Great Video Brock. I've wondered about these a lot, but they're just so expensive (IMO). I was wondering if anyone out there has bought a Bosch Head (The Beeping Sensor) if it would work with a construction laser level?? Those are much cheaper (like $40-50).... but I know they wouldn't shoot 1,000 yards.

I appreciate your video, but I'm still lost. I received my bosche 900 which has the remote. The case is not as nice as yours bc it does hold the tripod nor the stick. I'll be playing with it today. We will see. Thanks again.

Hi we are making a Farm pond and I bought this transit level exactly. I have an elevation high point of 74.00 from a Topo survey. My pond bottom needs to be 52.00. Can you give me a suggestion, how you would set it up for this excavation?

First, establish your ‘master bench mark’. You said the top was +74.00. Transfer that elevation to something that will not move, like a nail in a tree or a mark on a wall or anything permanent. Since 74.00 is likely dirt grade, it may not be convenient to get your master bench mark right at grade. Just measure up another foot or 2, to where you can put a nail or a mark, up out of the dirt and easy to reference. The easiest way to do this would be to use stakes and string line. You didn’t give the pond dimensions but just drive as many stakes, around the pond shape, as needed, a few feet outside of the digging area. Mark a known elevation on the stakes, using your laser level (for example +75.00. That way it’s 1 foot above the dirt grade). Then run a tight string line from stake to stake, right at your marks. Than you’ll know your line is level, at a known elevation. Just measure down from the string to the desired depth (+75.00 minus 23.00 equals +52.00, or bottom of finished pond depth.) Once you’ve dug down 6 or 8 feet, it will be easier to set some more stakes, lower down into the excavation, so you don’t have so much tape to deal with. (A couple sketches would make this easier to explain and understand.)

Misinformation is not cool. An optical level or a laser level is a great tool to check level in a horizontal plane. A transit will measure vertical angles. A great job demonstrating the laser level 👍

What is the accuracy per ft, or 100ft?

I have one similar to this model. It says 1/8in per 100 ft away.

My new GRL 900 is not turning on. Fresh batteries and for some reason - it won't turn on If anybody out there has a solution let me know. I cant easily return it due to my location
