Great video tommy..again ! I bought a poster many years ago with the direction of travel on it. Its the first thing that go's up on wall in my new work shop and it's a constant reminder. Two months ago I have a mate thats a plumber he was preparing a 300mm poly pipe for a flange with a trim router . He went the wrong direction and ended up with 12 stiches. You never hear this explained. Awesome keep them coming. Thanks mate

Fantastic video Tommy it's definitely the most detailed and easy to follow video I have seen on the subject. I think the answer to your question is clockwise 🙂

Great Video Tommy, very informative. My father in Law was a professional carpenter and showed me a great trick for working out which way to use a router, If you extend your right index finger forward and point your right thumb out at 90 degrees to the left then place the thumb on the edge you want to router the index finger will point in the correct direction. It seems to work whenever I've tried this.

  • 3 жыл бұрын

Thanks. Yes you could use the the finger and thumb method it will work in most cases but not all situations.

Great video! The router rotates clockwise, so it wants to go counterclockwise. I understand the right direction is therefore clockwise. 👍

I often use a "rule of thumb" or just a much simpler written guide, but I'm the kind of person who wants to know why and understand the physics of it. Your explanation did the trick. I made a copy of your guide and now I am more confident in what I'm doing with a router. What an excellent teacher you are, Tommy! I only recently discovered your videos and I'm on a mission to watch them all. My hat's off to ya!

It should be a balanced cut, so, should not matter, but, if you run clockwise, you will stand a better chance of not having trouble. You can lightly hold the router and see which way it wants to go, and go the other way for sure.. Ha..Ha.. Good video Tommy!!

Thanks for this Tommy, your video is exactly what I was looking for. I'm making a teak box for a very old sharpening stone that belonged to my father. The stone itself is just 12mm so I'll be taking 6mm from each part of the box. I've never routered hardwood so I'm a bit wary and not sure at what speed to run the router. But the bit I'm using is brand new and I've made a jig to contain the router on all sides so I'm ready to roll. Thanks again. Wish me luck!

Thank you for watching and good luck with your project. One of the first project I did with a router was an oil stone case I still have it pushing on 36 years later 🙂

@ All done now Tommy, I did it on full speed and it turned out grand. I'm going to try my hand at routing a design on the lid tomorrow, just a few curved lines or something like that.

Great video Tommy. Circle jig… hmmm seen many people go clockwise (I think!) but looking at your diagram I’d say it’s an outside cut and wanting the routing pulling in so I’d be tempted to go anti-clockwise. That seems to make more sense to me. If the bit is spinning clockwise and you go clockwise with it, surely it would run away…?

Thanks 😊. I posted the answer this evening 😀

Circle cut in a clock wise direction

  • 2 жыл бұрын

Hi clockwise is partially correct as it can be used for certain cuts but I would recommend anti clockwise as it can be used for all types of cuts. Here is a short video I did explaining it kzread.info/dash/bejne/jH57mpWxpa-3pqg.html

WHY THE HELL DO I WANT TO USE A ROUTER BY ITSELF WHEN I HAVE A TABLE............ YOU GET BAD CUTS THAT WAY !!!!!!!!

  • Жыл бұрын

So you reckon a router should only be used in a router table. Good luck with that as you will be very limited in what you can use your router for
