How to use a Router [properly this time!]

The latest update as Nigel T Best, Matt and Sally take a tired, subsiding house and totally transform it into a Dream House.
We are doing it (almost) all ourselves! What could possibly go wrong?!
HAVE YOU: Watched all those property shows like Homes Under The Hammer, Location Location Location or even building a Grand Design?
Have you longed of doing it yourself...but months (or years) later find you still haven't done it?
Why is that? Maybe this channel will encourage and inspire you?!
We feel everyone has a dream property, don't you?
What's your Dream House?
Castle, Chateau, Houseboat?
What about a lopsided 2 bed terrace? No?
Well, that's our choice.
But at the moment it is a bit of a disaster - no kitchen, heating to only half the house, dodgy electrics and woodchip wallpaper everywhere.
Can we turn it around?
We hope we can but we also hope it might inspire you to have a go and maybe EscapeToTheDreamHouse!

With our love, Nigel & Sally
PS Remember this channel is for fun and we don't offer any advice. Do your own due diligence on anything property related :)

You're going the right way about it. Every practice cut is adding to your skill level. Don't forget to cut in biscuits on the join. You can use the router with a special bit. Don't rely on the bolts alone to prevent vertical movement.

Thank you very much! And that is top stuff re the biscuits. I have to say I am nervous about routing those suckers! 😂🍻

Well done getting that joint right in the end. I’ve had to do a few worktops and they are always a pain. Routers are amazing for doing all kinds of woodworking tasks so you’ll find it useful. I also use the router to make holes in worktops for sinks, hobs etc. turn the worktop upside down, mark where you need to cut out, screw timber battens down as a guide for the router. Is a bit of a faff setting it all up but gives you a nice neat straight line. Make sure you have the cutout part supported tho for when it drops! Better than trying to cut it out with a jigsaw

Thanks and I think I like the router! I reckon it will be a useful tool for life! Everything about worktops makes me nervous though! 😂🍻

I'm delighted for you that you got your joint sorted, but as someone tried to tell you earlier when using square edge worktops there is no need for a mason mitre at all. The end is butted up to the front, with the edge banding removed and it is dead simple, just use the dogbone connectors in the same way! Anyway, you now know how to do it on the next place, and you've got a good new router... PS before you fit these tops you should reduce the length of the smaller top to give yourself some wiggle room when bolting up etc. Also, it will disconnect the non-waterproof worktop core from the damp walls, avoiding any expansion of the tops. Any gap will be covered by tiles or wallboard you use.

Mornin' Nigel! Hey, in case you haven't already thrown away all of that wood dust that your Son was playing with, you might want to get a small (empty) baby food jar or a medicine bottle and clean it good and fill it with the saw dust. I saw a woodworking guy who was refinishing an old piece of furniture who needed something to mix with the wood glue to fill a few holes and he did just that and it worked wonderfully! And you never know when you'll want to fill those screw holes and make the disappear. This will nicely be able to be painted and sanded ect... Just a thought. I already have an empty jar put aside for my upcoming project for the saw dust. Hey, I almost forgot, I saw a video awhile back about some tests that someone did on the chemical structure of 'parmesan cheese', (which we liberally sprinkle on top of our pizza's and spaghetti over here). It seems that their tests showed that most shaker bottles of it that we buy at the store is close to 40% saw dust! All I got to say about that is, it's the best tasting 'saw dust' I ever ate. And then again, I've not eaten that much of it! LOL

Morning! 😩 I can't believe I have actually swept it up (Matthew forgot..!) If I remember I will do that for sure. Great idea and nice tip-of-the-hat acknowledgement to the woodworking guy! Let's share more of these great ideas! 😎🍻

Ok so the parmesan thing is not good...I saw a similar thing about spices bought over the internet. Some contained all sorts of fluff 'n' stuff! It seems like we need to buy a block of cheese and a grater and use a bit of elbow grease!! 😂🍻

I see you solved the bushing problem then! The sink does need to be the correct distance from plug sockets btw in order to meet building regs. Regarding dust extraction Screwfix do a vac called Titan for about £50, it is wet and dry so useful for water issues too. It's up to you but MDF etc is really bad for you so best done outside if no dust extraction.

I know. A bush. Page 14 is where they first mentioned it. Who reads to page 14 of instructions?! 😂😂 Yep. Weird but electric regs don’t mention it. Building regs do. 300mm so all good. The worktop fortunately isn’t MDF and I’d love a big extraction unit! Any sponsors out there 😉 🍻and thanks for taking the time to comment 👍

Thank you Matty! Very kind of you to say so. I am of course a professional kitchen fitter...😂 Of course not! I'm actually an accountant by trade but happy to try and learn most things. Except plumbing. And coring out holes in walls. And horse racing. 🍻

Nice and thank you! I was told that chippies make the best project managers because they are on site the longest and see all the other trades and when they are needed. Any truth to that?! I tell people that Uni is great to learn to socialise, cook and clean for yourself but trades can’t be AI replaced (yet!!) Always a need for property owners to use a trade (because they they aren’t as daft as me and they get someone in!!) 🍻🍻
