How To Use A Multimeter For Beginners: Easy Version!

How to use a multimeter for beginners! Multimeters are a vital tool for diagnosing all kinds of electrical issues, so learning how to use one can dramatically improve not just your automotive repair skills, but your general understanding of electronics! Multimeters used to be analog, but most of them are digital now, and we will be covering the digital kind today. A digital multimeter is sometimes referred to as a DVOM, or Digital Volt/Ohm Meter.
0:00 • Introduction to the Multimeter!
Working on a basic 12V DV (direct current) system poses very little danger for most people, which makes it an ideal learning environment! If you don't want to mess with your car, a household battery can be used for some tests here. This tutorial will be showing twelve volt results in most instances.
2:29 • Setting 1: Voltage
This will likely be the setting you use the most, since for beginners and advanced users alike, there's a lot that can be learned from voltage levels. (Voltage drop across components is one of those things, but this will be covered in another video!)
4:09 • Setting 2: Amperage
This setting poses the most risk to your multimeter, but if you're careful, you won't have to replace any fuses in it after testing a circuit! In order to see how many amps flow through a circuit, the tool needs to become part of the circuit!
5:45 • Setting 3: Resistance
Testing the resistance of a component lets you know how much it will resist the flow of electricity. If you want to test resistance levels, make sure the component is disconnected from the circuit! Power running though the component or other paths being tested in parallel can give inaccurate results.
7:05 • Setting 4: Continuity
This is a good test for wires to make sure they aren't broken on the inside. This is very similar to a resistance test, because you have to measure the component off the rest of the circuit. Diodes are more complicates and will be covered in another video more thoroughly!

I have a bunch of strange electrical problems with my 2005 gto and the first mechanic I took it to gave up after 10 hrs of trouble shooting. I'm going to begin to learn how to look into it myself and your video came out in a remarkably timely manner thank you!!!

That's quite the convenient timing! I plan on making a few more videos explaining how to use a multimeter in more advanced ways, and there's still a battery drain issue on my 2005 GTO I need to track down, so keep an eye on the channel!

@@CarsSimplified yeah battery drain is my biggest problem (aside from limp mode which happened once). Most of my strange electrical problems have to do with the lights. And the wire cluster behind the dash is fine!

I really liked your video. It has helped me out a lot. I have a 1979 21-foot Classic Sunlounger (inboard out-board boat) that I want to rewire this spring.
