Oh my goodness 🤦🏼‍♀️ I have been trying to learn different stitches in a shawl- I get going really good and then I make a small mistake! Trying to pick back takes hours🙆🏼‍♀️ I even started over! Only to make a mistake 😩 Can you tell yet - I’m just a basic knitter trying to learn outside my box. For some reason I thought I remembered hearing something about a life line so tonight I checked your podcast out. You are so good at what you do! And I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate your KZread channel 👍

Woah! I have been using interchangeable needles but have been threading my lifelines with a darning needle this whole time. Thank you for the tip this will save me so much time knitting my lace shawl ☺️

Hi Norman. Great video. Lifelines are wonderful! Especially in lace! They’ve saved me many times, lol! Those Lantern Moon needles look lovely! I recently won a set of the Knitter’s Pride Nite and Day interchangeable set and the wood is beautiful. Normally I use metal but I am liking these because they are polished to such a beautiful and smooth sheen. Thanks for another great tutorial!💕

Brilliant! I used the dental floss that is flat, but fishing line is wonderful!! I struggled using it in the round. So, I added it after the row was stitched, like you show. In the lace pattern I was following, it worked, too. I just needed to go a little slower on rowcwhere it was added.

Norman, I am amazed! Who knew that hole was for lifelines? I'm putting one in now, just for fun. Thanks!

This video came at the perfect time for me! I'm knitting a navy blue blanket, and it's gotten really boring for me. You've reminded me that I could use some sock yarn to make lifeline temporary stripes, so I can enjoy the pretty play of colors while knitting, then take them out once the blanket is finished. :-)

This would be so much faster than my method... since I lose the stitches and end up ripping out the whole thing if I just rip back, I started "un-knitting" to the mistake. If you're not sure what that means, I'd turn the work around and start undoing each stitch one at a time as if I was knitting backwards so I wouldn't lose it and I could get to my mistake. This took a TON of time because, of course, it takes me 2-3 times longer to un-knit. -_- Thanks for this tutorial!

do note however, that I tink (read knit backwards) as well. For example, when you work with a super fuzzy yarn, unraveling is often not a possibilty. But for the majority of all projects, this works like a charm!

Thanks ! I tipically use a life line for complicated lace projects or celtic cabled patterns, it sure often saved me a lot of unravelling, and brings a security that makes knitting complicated stitch pattern much more enjoyable. I use unwaxed unflavoured dental floss. 😉

I am a new knitter and I’ve heard of lifelines before but never really understood what exactly they do! Now I know. I don’t believe I will be knitting anything too complicated any time soon but maybe someday! Thank you!

yah, for less complicated projects it's not needed, if you ask me. But later on, a lot of people love using them.

Norman, you just posted this at the perfect time. I am currently knitting a cowl with a folded edge. I am going to put in a life line to show me where to pick up the stitches during the bind off... Unless there's another (easier) way? Thanks for your amazing content and your inclusivity.

well, there are other ways to finish things but if you want to pick things up, yes, sure that could work very well!

I was never taught how to add a lifeline although they were mentioned at knitting labs! Thanks for showing me such an easy way to do this💕. Would it work in brioche? Thanks again 🙏🏼🥰

this absolutely works for every pattern - especially brioche! Tho, you kind of will have to be careful when picking up stitches so you don't accidentally drop a double stitch or flip the yarnover part around.

Omg I've been doing with a needle by hand which takes forever and extremely annoying! This is great tips

well, it's always the same idea. always pick up the right leg and a purl stitch also has a right leg. but probably that doesn't help you a lot but righ tnow I can'T make a video about that.

Unrelated question. I want to get your lace shawl pattern, but don’t see it on Ravelry. I recall you saying something about your Patreon subscribers having access to it. Is it not available separately but only through Patreon? If so, which level(s) enjoy that benefit? Thanks, Norman!

it's available on ravelry: www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/lace-shawl-1 But if you subscribe on the lowest tier of patreon, you also get it :) Decide for yourself what you want to do, but the monthly subscription on patreon is cheaper than the one time price and you get acess to the knit-along on patreon.

Ho Norman, I don't have any of the interchangeable needles. Is there another alternate method I could use? I've never heard of lifelines before, but I wish I had. I've just picked up a project that I started at least 2 years ago. I had dropped a stitch or done something wrong in a complicated cable pattern where there were decreases going on as well. I ended up unraveling so many rows to get back to a place where I could figure out what was going on. A lifeline would have been so useful.

well, the second tip shows you how to do this with a spare needle. So...you can't really do this on the fly with fixed circulars in any convenient way (at least not that I know).

Thank you, Norman! I do have a question, though. For those of us who are left-handed, can we go through the left leg of the stitch all the way across rather than the right leg? I’ve watched three videos, including yours, and they all indicate going through the right leg but the knitters in the videos are right handed. Thanks for considering! ❤

i am not the expert on left-handed knitting. So this will depend on your overal technique. The better way to say this would be to go through the "front leg". In general, these terms should be the ones we should use, leading and trailing leg, front and back leg. That way, you know what I am talking about no matter if you do eastern knitting or you are a leftie. So when you look at a row of knit stitches on your needles, you need to go through that leg which is in front

Hi Norman! I’m an English style knitter and I throw. I’m pretty sure I knit right handed because that’s how I was taught. But if I’m using a tapestry needle to do anything, I’m using my left hand, so I’m going from left to right as if writing on paper. … as I’m reading this response, it clicked what you were saying. You’ve got a front leg and a back leg so it wouldn’t matter which side I was coming from, as far as the left side of the fabric or the right side of the fabric as long as I’m staying with that front leg. That makes sense now. Thank you so much! That has me thinking completely differently than I have been about my knitted fabric! Wow. Thank you. 💚🧶

ah...that one is automated. I am using the laternmoon set by Knitters Pride.

What brand of circular needles are you using in the first example? Could you please link to it? You show Addi needles in the second example but I didn't see an indication of the first brand you used.

then, you would have to thread it on a tapestry needle and go through each right leg of the stitches in a row the way I show you in the second part with a knitting needle - only that you do it with a tapestry needle.

Ok. Now I feel really dumb, Norman. Lol! A real "well, duh!" moment for me. 🤦 I should have been able to figure out that that's how the lifeline hole is used. I mean, I figured out how to use a darning needle and unwaxed dental floss to do a lifeline. Using the key hole should have been obvious. Lol! I'll chalk it up as a "Senior Moment" and move on. 🤟🥰💜✌️🧶
