How to use a lever drag fishing reel - J&H Tackle

jhfi.sh/egCp3O - How to use a lever drag fishing reel. The switch from a star drag to a lever drag fishing reel can be confusing so here's a quick video showing you how to do it. The great thing about lever drags are you only have to set your drag once, not every time like with a star drag.

I never used a lever drag but I'm going to get the Avet SX 5.3 M.C. for yellowtail this summer..Thank you for this video as using a lever drag looks very simple and easy..good job

    @floridafishingo You need to determine what # you would like to set the drag at. Then with line on the reel and the reel on the rod, tie the line to a scale. You need 2 people to do this. don't try it yourself! One person holds the scale while the other pulls up gently on the rod. If the drag is too tight, ease back on it, or if there is not enough drag, increase it. I hope this helps.

    The Avet has just popped onto my radar, and it looks like an amazing reel. I'm use to reels with a level wind system, so wouldn't the line bunch up while one is spooling it up and/or reeling it in after a long cast? How does one keep an even balance across the spool? Thanks in advance!

    So I have always used reels with level winds and am interested in switching to lever drag reels. I have a few possibly dumb questions but, please forgive me as I am a newcomer to these reel types. Do you use your thumb evenly spool your line when retrieving? How does this come into play when handling big game on larger lever drag reels? I would very much appreciate some feedback. Also, I love your videos man! Keep up the good work!

    hi Josh, have you ever casted thus reel (SX without MC) before? I have to thumb the spool every cast to avoid backslashes--is that normal for this model, or there is a way to cast without have to thumb it all the time? thumbing on center of spool ok? or do i thumb on the side plate of the spool?

    Question regarding free spool. I recently decided to finally give lever drag a go. The only issue I have is that when attempting to free spool, I need to turn the drag knob to lessen the drag in order for the free spool to go out on its own. If I don't , I need to pull the line out by hand. Is something wrong here ?

    hello @jandhtackle, i recently switch from a star drag to a lever drag. I got me a penn fathom fth60ldhs that has the free, 1, 2, 3, strike, full, and sunset settings on it. when im casting it i usually have my thumb on the spool to prevent it from bird nesting but it doesnt really work out unless i do it with the star drag. I'm wondering when im casting it from free position, do i need to lift the lever up for more tension so it doesnt bird nest? i am also a shore casting guy.

    It says so right in the Avet manual. You set strike drag to 25-30% of your line strength and you measure it with a scale. If you don't believe me you can look up the Avet manual online it's free

  • @nmigliore

    I realize how to preset the strike drag; it's supposed to be 20-30% of your line strength; so basically, if you're running 40 ilb braid, 10 pounds of drag at strike is suitable. But what is meant when they say, for example, "9 pounds at strike, 14 at full." when talking about reels? Is that the max drag for each position? But if that's true, how can such a reel handle 40+ ilb test line when the recommended strike is greater than the max drag at strike? Thanks if you can clear up my confusion lol

  • @nmigliore

    I was just confused by the max drag listed; I mean, if you're setting the drag (in strike) to 10 pounds (which is recommended for using 40 ilb braid), that would be above the reel's listed max drag of 9 pounds at strike. I thought that would mean you're putting too much pressure on the reel.

  • @TheBowlingboy300

    Anywhere from a 4ft blacktip to about a 6 or maybe 7 ft bulls and spinners. Im not sure about line i was gonna use about 80 pound braid maybe about 400 yards give or take and some mono on it. I was just looking at tackle direct website. I tried to put a link but I cant figure out how to do it

  • @nmigliore
    @nmigliore11 жыл бұрын

    If I use 15# mono, 25-30% the breaking strength would be around 4 to 4.5 pounds; that seems a little light but is it? I'm looking to target fluke, blues, stripers.

    As a beginner to open faced reel with a lever drag, which of all Avets would you recommend? Also whats the difference between the raptor and the one you have on this video? Just like the way they look and that they can cast real far.

  • @jandhtackle

    @jandhtackle

    9 жыл бұрын

    Mad Max The Raptor is a suped up version of the regular reel. Twice the drag and a better lever drag system. If you are just starting out you can try an SXJ or an MXJ. They have a narrow spool so getting used to putting the line back on is an easier task.

  • @jandhtackle
    @jandhtackle11 жыл бұрын

    I don't know what the breaking strength has to do with it but most anglers use 15-25 lb depending on if they are fishing for fluke, blues or stripers.

  • @nmigliore
    @nmigliore11 жыл бұрын

    When you set the drag at strike, it should be 25-30% of the line strength. Eg: 15 pound test would mean 4 to 4.5 pounds at strike. I'm only saying that seems pretty light for strike, isn't it? Maybe it's just my perception - I've always used spinning reels but I've never measured the drag pressure, so maybe ~4 pounds is actually quite a lot.

  • @jandhtackle
    @jandhtackle12 жыл бұрын

    Yes those are the max drags at those positions. Max drag has nothing to do with the lb test line. If you are looking at an Avet SX 5.3, most people load that with 40-50 lb braid and never have a problem.

    If I was uncoordinated and couldn't do simple tasks like guiding my line while fishing, I would probably need a level wind too. Luckily, I have basic hand eye coordination skills, and enjoy the increased distance affording by not having a level wind, as well as the increased reliability of not having a worm gear. There is a reason most big game reels do not have a level wind...

    Marc Barilla When fighting a fish, I don't bother trying to keep the line even on the spool. Do that when retrieving a lure. Not that hard to get used to, and the lever drag casts further without extra gear on the LW. These reels are super. Love my SX 4/6 MC.
