My dad was a pretty sloppy person, but one thing he always did properly was open letters with a letter opener. He passed away almost 2 weeks ago and I'm sorting through some of his stuff, including unopened letters, so here I am! Learning how to use his letter opener, because I usually just rip things apart.

Thanks for the video. I got an Eiffel Tower letter opener for Christmas that I love and it looks great on my desk but I didn't know how to use it to neatly open my letters. It was very informative.

I use it by cutting open the sealed area instead of the top so the envelope isn't all jagged. (Works most times) I don't know why I like letter openers. They're just cool^^

I'm a beginning knife maker but I'm practicing on mild steel right now. I wanted to make a letter opener but I needed to be sure of how its design affected its use. Thanks for the info!

Where did you purchase this from?

I prefer it to be a little on the sharper side. Some envelopes are sealed so tightly that the opener ends up ripping the envelope and the contents. This happens to me ALL THE TIME at work when opening check envelopes.

😭 I just bought a sting (like from lotr/the hobbit) replica letter opener and I wasn’t expecting that to be brought up in the first 30 seconds lmao

The most affordable letter opener I could find is sold by amazon for a grand total of 1.23

Well if you sharpen it enough it can be used as a knife and a razor sharp letter opener would open letters way cleaner

I have never had an issue with opening a letter with a dull opener. They're not meant to be knives. My edges always look clean and tidy. Not to mention that if the edge WAS razor sharp, it would leave an insanely intact edge that would just promote the possibility of a paper cut. You can just try it yourself. Go use the smooth side of a butter knife - perfectly clean edges every time without any sharpening. There's really no upside to having a razor sharp letter opener.

Looks nice. I would need to hold it to know for sure, but from the video, overall the blunted blade is slightly too thick at the middle. So in that sense it just misses the mark. Also, you’re somewhat misusing it, but perhaps that’s because of the blade thickness. It’s more of a forward motion to do it in one movement. Look up the video “Our favorite tools: the letter opener”

I don't think people sharpen them cause they don't know how to use them, most want a slim knife close by just in case 😳

No - for those tasks you do need something sharp to cut through tape.

I still make a mess using one of these 🤣

Too much hesitation as if you were not sure what you were going to say. Your style of using a letter opener did not work well - it should take only one complete slit to open an envelope not two as your demonstrated in your first attempt.
