How to use a Grey Card to set a Custom White Balance | The Perfect White Balance in Camera.

Students see me using this out and about and are like, wtf, so TODAY we're going through how to use a grey card to set white balance in-camera, so you don't need to worry about it later. You WILL need to re-set if the light changes and you can always just shoot the card and balance later (not if shooting in JPG and not if shooting video!).
The grey card I use is this one: geni.us/iSOxd
Custom white balance process for different makes of camera, including Nikon, Canon, Panasonic and Fuji can be found in the blog post here: www.thattogspot.com/how-to-se...
If in doubt, check your manual!

    Thanks so much! I struggle with recognizing natural skin tones in editing-after looking at a screen for too long, I forget what humans look like-so hopefully a white balance card will eliminate a lot of those judgement calls!

    Very helpful. I was in the woods today doing some practice. Had one of the kids hairy Teddy's to practice with. Doesn't move, perfect subject 😃. I was finding the amount of dappled light difficult. Very hard to find a spot which wasn't dark, wasn't blazing bright or wasn't dappled!

    If that is all you have, then yes :). But, white paper is rarely white white, it's usually got a tint to it, so be careful 🙂

    In a home studio environment, which exposure/flash power do you shoot the grey card at? Since whenever the light changes, it alters the color balance of the light. Do you get your exposure right first by eye, with the flash and then shoot your grey card?

  • @ThatPhotographySpot

    @ThatPhotographySpot

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes - that's exactly we do it. But, the flash colour value doesn't change that much, there is very little fluctuation 🤗

    @@ThatPhotographySpot I can't seem to focus on the grey card though. What do you suggest?

  • @daemon1143

    Is there some advantage to setting it in camera? I found I tend to forget as the day goes on and end up with screwy colour on everything. If I shoot the card then I can easily do it in post. I tried to buy one of those pop out cards like yours last year, but when it arrived, no little pouch, no pop out, just the same size thing in a flat bag; hard to pack, very disappointing. You should consider getting some direct from China (where they all come from) printed up with your logo and sell them as Merch.

  • @ThatPhotographySpot

    @ThatPhotographySpot

    Yeah for sure it depends on how and what you shoot as to whether it's a good plan or not, but it's a great habit to get into to know you can trust your WB in post with non-black and non-white subjects, like Pippi, who is an absolute nightmare to balance to if you're out. Shooting in an incorrect WB can affect your clipping values in the RGB channels, even if you're working in RAW, so it is a good plan to be close, but as you say, natural light will always throw you curveballs! Hope you sent that card back, sounds like a rip off! I'm not sure anyone would want a TPS grey card but I'll add it to the thought box!

    When you're doing a shoot and you're taking photos in different locations with different lighting, do you have to take a photo every time the light is different? Or just once at the beginning?

    Quick question: can I use white paper for correct colour temperature white balance and then use grey card to get correct exposure?

  • @ThatPhotographySpot

    @ThatPhotographySpot

    2 ай бұрын

    No, paper is usually not neutral in tone, even if it might look like it. Often it’s slightly warm or slightly cool 👍

  • @JWS1968
    @JWS19686 ай бұрын

    I have a Panasonic S5ii and it does a very quick and easy auto white balance BUT it just does the correction without telling you what the kelvin temp is. This isn't a problem when using one camera but if you want to use the same temp for multiple cameras it's a bit of a pain in the arse. Please Panasonic just display the auto white balance temp when set.

    Yes, some grey cards are solid middle grey - they’re advertised as both white balance and exposure. Some are not both. This grey card is both white balance and a grey card. Colour checkers are for colour balance, but often do white balance too as a side product.
