    I've learning fighting games first time the last month after playing them casually for the last 20 years or so, spent around 90 hours in SF5, it's honestly not easy but every day I feel there's a small improvement. I started to read patterns easier and punish some moves here and there. I'm still bronze, but I'll keep learning. Believe me you'll enjoy the ride once you get into them, I encourage you to start playing and learn 🙂

    I think people enjoy watching fighting games (myself included) because there's an appreciation for the sheer skill and time it takes to learn inputs, combos, frame data and matchups plus execute in front of thousands. These are games we can all play but not things we can all do.

    My biggest problem when playing fighting games with a controller is it's extremely hard to use the d-pad to do the move that are designed for a stick (for example: zigzag, half circle, 3/4 circle, full circle,...). I just use the analog to do those moves, although it's not really consistent.

    This is actually super helpful, I've always disliked the whole quarter circle input scheme for a lot of fighting games. Growing up with Tekken d-pad always felt more comfortable so I'm really happy to see that it is in fact possible.

Needless to say, this video helped me quite a bit!

    There is no such thing as a z shaped input in fighting games. Its a misprint from the early days that still persists today apparently. You just press forward before doing a quarter circle. The only problem is its so easy to perform once you know this you have to be careful not to do a shoryuken instead of a fireball.

There's only 2 things I think are really, really hard to do.... using 3 buttons at once multiple times such as trying to airdash/wavedash in XMen vs Street or other old Marvel games, or mashing (like mash out from grav tempest in MvC2), everything else I can do just fine on pad. even mashing out of grav tempest I used to be able to do back in the day, but my years of not training made me lose this skill... hahah

    Rebecca C it seems easier to hit triangle and circle easier, but i think i will be very confused 😂 because i am too used to the regular system light to medium to heavy. I dont think i can ever get my brain to change that sequence. But also, medium buttons are more important than heavys. They are used way more for pressure and combos, you should prioritize them instead of heavys. 🙏❤️

    I'm very glad to be under the first 10.000 subscribers of this AMAZING channel.. Seriously my new favorite channel when it comes to the explanation of fighting-game-mechanics and definitely my favorite one when it comes to explaining and promoting the art of fighting sticks.. ^_^ I play beat em up games for over 20 years now and only ever really played with a pad controller, but your videos really make me want to get in tune with fightin sticks much more and i discovert a new passion in the art of mastering them (and maybe even getting familiar with modding some as well) ..Your suggestions and tipps are easy to follow and you explain everything in a very humble and personable way, this is what i also appriciate very much.. So hyped to see this channel grow strong and healthy over time :D Give it one more year and you can hopefully ad another 0 to the count, that's what i would wish for you.. Best of luck and keep up the good work, my friend !! :-) Sincerely: a new subscriber !!

    Thank you for the video. It answered a few questions I had. I have been playing Street Fighters for a few years. I have been using Ryu primarily and Guile. I can only do Shoryuken when Ryu faces to the right. For some reasons, my left thumb cannot execute Shoryuken when Ryu faces left. I cannot execute any combo either. I have a question actually. When you start a combo, do you wait until the character is ready for the next move or just execute the whole sequence? For example, if I want to start a combo with a jumping kick, do I wait until my character lands on the ground for the next move, or I can execute the whole sequence without waiting? Thank you.

  • @JoystickNY

    @JoystickNY

    Thats a great questions, also a hard question to answer, i know that in tekken7, you have to input the commands earlier. Where as in street fighter, its closer to hitting it at the same time. Sf5 is more lenient that it gives us abit more window for inputs, once you get the timing and muscle memory, you will pick it up quick. So the answer is basically almost near the same time, you can see a move hit and then input the command and it will still connect, but in games like marvel vs capcom, and tekken, you kinda just have to go for it

    My main struggle is in KOF when you have to do half circle back half circle forward, or 2x half circle forward, etc during a combo. And finally in games like Guilty Gear or BBTAG to do air jump cancels. I feel that it just works 40% of the time. The game registers forward and up instead of a diagonal input

    I know I'm 2 years late, nonetheless. I got Guilty Gear (the 1998 one) for steam since it was on sale now, and it cost almost nothing. Anyway, I'm used to playing Tekken and Mortal Kombat on a ps4 controller. I never went hard into those games but I knew very basic combos well. Point is, I find it near impossible to do any moves that require a back or forward input and then immideatly a half circle, like May's dynamic. I can't even imagine playing KOF honestly, MK seems to be a lot easier on inputs.

I've been playing with an xbox360 controller and although I got used to it, I still feel like a miss a good 30% of my inputs because the d-pad is not responsive enough. Is the Dualshock 4 that good? or do you just have a lot of practise with it? I've also been thinking about getting a Hori Fighting Commander, but while the reviews for that gamepad are good, I've seen people complain because the hori d-pad gets loose and mushy after 6 months of use or so.

    Man, thank you SO much. I always played with stick on gamepad, but there's always a situation, when I do bad motion input and a character doing wrong move. Last time I played DNF Duel I lost a few matches, because I was trying motion inputs, but insted of doing quarter cirlce forward, game reconized it as quarter circle backward for some reason. I flipped really hard after this and tried for some kind of solution. Thanks to google it led me to your video and I tried to use D-pad. Before D-pad was really hard for me, but this guide make it so easy to understand, so now I try to play only on D-pad. I'm still garbage at fighting games, but at least the character doing what I want now. I even go from level 3 to level 6 in Strive, just because of this. So thank you again so much.

    The way I play with my controller is the way I’ve played it my whole life! I had no idea that it was something that some players had difficulty with. I hold it very similar to you and but I use the analog stick. I used to use the Directional buttons.
