How to use a bath transfer bench.
Hello, today I am going to teach you how to properly set up and use a bath transfer bench. Some people also call this a tub transfer bench. First of all I'd like to introduce myself, my name is Dawn. I'm a nurse as well as a safe patient handling specialist. I have been teaching safe patient handling for over 20 years. I have taught safe bath transfers to thousands of people in hospitals, nursing homes and home care settings across north america. Today we are going to compare 2 types of bath transfer benches, an older style and a newer style. Alright, lets get started. The first transfer bench I have here is the older style. You want to make sure you have it set up so that the bench is perfectly level. To use the bath transfer bench properly, simply back up to the edge of the bench until your knees touch the edge. Then sit down. Next, rotate your body while lifting your legs over the edge and into the tub. Now slide your body across the bench until you are seated in the correct location. You can now grab your shower wand and start bathing. So as you can see it is fairly easy to transfer into your tub or shower with this bench. There are a few things I don’t like about the older models though. They are a hard plastic, cold to the touch and the twisting and sliding can sometimes cause skin tears and be stressful on knee and hip joints. Now let look at a newer style bath transfer bench. This one is set up the same way so make sure it is level. This chair can rotate by pressing on this red lever so I have set up the chair to face into the room. Back up to the seat as shown before and sit down. Fasten the lap belt then push down on the lever to swivel. Once I’m facing forward, press the grey button in and then slide to the center of the tub. The things I really like about this bath transfer bench is that it is padded. The padded seat makes it much more comfortable and warmer to the touch. The padded armrests also give me a good sense of security. The swivel seat and slide function really make skin tears and joint stress a non issue. So which tub transfer bench do I like the best? I would have to say the newer style. It is a little more money but I think the additional features and comfort make it well worth it. • How to use a bath tran... • Demonstration: Using a...

My 91 year old grandmother used the blue transfer bench. It was very safe for her and she loved it. We split the shower curtain and pinned it with clothes pins around the bench.

You can install the chair closer to the controls... I think they had it moved back to make it easier to film the video. You do need to find just the right spot where they have room to pivot in and out but can still reach. Often there is going to be another person there to assist with the bathing, this just makes it easier and safer for both.

Hello Noel, I am in a technical writing class at a Community College and I am curious if I can use screenshots from your video for a school project? I have an assignment on Usability where I make instructions about a task and analyze the usability of the instructions I create. I hope to become an Occupational Therapist in the future so I chose to make instructions for a shower bench. Rather than buying the product, I thought I could use images from the web. Your video is the clearest visual I can find so far. Would that be okay? Thank you for your time!

On the last transfer see in blue, is there a way to take the safety belt off? My aunt has Alzheimer's and she won't take a shower or a bath unless someone's here. She's afraid she will fall and can't get anyone. It doesn't matter that we've told her 15 times that she can put her cordless phone right on the back of her toilet. She comes up with a crazy ex excuses why she can't do that. It's really bothering me because she won't bathe for months. She does wash everyday her feet and her important parts but she doesn't shampoo or hair very often. Whenever I'm there several days a week I try to say why don't you go take a shower while I'm here and she has an excuse it's too cold or I don't feel like it right now. I think that blue one would work great but I don't want her to think she has two safety belt herself in. She's already overly ridiculous about some things. She's only 71 and is strong, but sayings trembling innocent weakness when she's wanting to get her way. It's kind of like since her mind is going she feels like she's got to be so old that she can't do that. All she talks about to me is well it's not the Alzheimer's I am just so old. And every time she does I tell her she is younger than our president. He doesn't look mentally or physically incapable. I know she's becoming mentally incapable, but I hate to see her become physically incapable just because of her mind. Not every cases the same but my granny States fry and physical Way Beyond the time she completely lost everything to Alzheimer's.

Dede, my mom doesn't want to bathe either. One thing I've been doing lately is taking her to the movies, which she really enjoys. But I tell her she needs a bath before we go out, and most of the time she's all for it.

imagesfromLA does she have Alzheimer's or a form of dementia? My aunt seems to not want to bathe out of sheer Terror LOL she has a couple cheap irrational fears. I told her she can put her cordless phone right by the bathtub and she makes all kinds of excuses that make no sense and keep saying that she can't put her phone there. That's a great idea, I've got to find something she really likes to do and use that as an incentive. She doesn't like to go places but, I might tell her that all cook her some sort of meal while she showers and will eat ice cream in bed or something. By the way, I ordered a chair like the first one, the white one, yesterday on Amazon. That's hype had of vastly different price point from just over $100 to $48. I got the $48 one since the reviews were good and hers is not because she isn't capable of getting in the bathtub, she's just afraid that she's going to slip and fall. She is living in the home my grandfather built in the 40s and she took care of my grandmother after a renegade plaque got loose during carotid artery surgery and left her a little paralyzed in one side, but the worst side effect was aphasia. One night, my grandmother got up and fell and broke her hip. She didn't get to come home after that, and had to be in the nursing home. My Aunt Linda now sleeps in the bedroom where Mama Lou (What we call my grandmother) fell. I really think it's some deep-seeded phobia and misplaced guilt that's heightened as the dementia gets worse. Dang, I almost sounded smart LOL being the sole caregiver of someone with Alzheimer's, you have to take your laughs where you can find 'em! OH, and thank you for the reply and info! My thoughts and prayers are with you and your mother.

Dede, I just thought I'd tell you about something that has worked for me. I know you might not have thought about the little bath trick I've used with my mom. My mom is developing dementia. It sounds like hers is not as advanced as your aunt's, though it is slowly progressing. My mother comes up with similar excuses not to bathe as your aunt, but like I said before, I seem to have found that trigger that makes her forget about the excuses when we're going to the movies. Hopefully you'll be able to figure out something that will make your aunt want to bathe. I think what helps the most is that I take her out of the house at least once a day, usually to the market (though she waits for me in the car), and sometimes to the park where we go for a walk to keep her active. Good luck to you.

imagesfromLA thanks! It's hard to get her out, but I just don't let her come up with enough excuses. Sometimes I just take her out for a drive. We live in a small town and can be in nature in 5 minutes. So we just drive those curvy paved roads out by the lake. It's really fun in the fall when the leaves are all falling into the road. Makes you feel like you're in an epic movie, driving the roads in New England lol thanks again!

Hey Dede, did you get the transfer bench yet? How did it work out? I bought one, but it's not working out so good for me. My mom comes up with all kinds of excuses not to use it. I think she needs someone to be there helping her, but since I'm a man she doesn't want me in the bathroom with her. She can take regular baths, but I'm afraid she's really going to damage her spine getting in and out of the tub because her bones have become brittle from osteoporosis. She's also afraid to stand for a shower. Well, I guess she's just going to have to keep taking regular baths for now.
