Based on your suggestions, I went to my local Treck dealer and purchased new 27.5 Bontrager Line Comp 30 wheel with this hub and added the extra pawls. Many rides on the wheel with zero issues and noticible engagement. Best $130 I ever spent. Thanks 😊

This video is just what I was looking for. I have a Fuel ex 5 which Also has the same 54 tooth hub. I love the bike but the latency of hub engagement has been bothering me a bit. You specially notice it when you are going uphill and quickly trying to shift gears. Never realized it was this easy (and cheap) to double the engagement. Now hopefully my local trek shop has these parts. Again super helpful video!

James, your vids helped me steer through my new wheel purchase, many thanks! Liked everyone I came across. The stock wheels on my bike came with this hub; the Bontrager paradigm 25 comp has the 54-tooth hub. My new wheels, the Aeolus Pro 5s, come with 24 teeth. As far as you know, is there any way to switch these, to get the 54T (which would be boosted to 108!) on the Aeolus 5s? Other than rebuilding the wheel to switch the hubs, of course. Thanks + cheers!

Ordered the parts. then realised I will need a tool to unmount the 12-speed cassette so I ordered a tool kit. Before using the tool, I first tried to gently pull off the outer ring which comes out of the cassette (which turned out to be the tip of the xd driver, I'm such a noob at this haha) and... pulled the whole thing off all together. All pals perfectly in place. Lucky me. Placed the 3 new pals and springs easily and slided the complete casette with xd driver onto the wheel again. Piece of cake. For sure double as much clicks for every full wheel spin. I'm quite curious if I will also feel any difference. Thanks for the tip

You may not notice much difference if you're mostly riding on pavement (which I am assuming based on the wheels you mention). The rapid engagement is really really nice off-road where you tend to stop and resume pedaling a lot more often, and you want the hub to engage quickly. 54 teeth is a pretty good amount for the road though (for comparison, a Chris King R45 hub has 45 points of engagement). The upgrade to 108 teeth on your Aeolus wheels certainly won't hold you back in any noticeable way (the tiny extra drag from three more pawls is only present while coasting), so go for it if you want a fun little project! Put some nice, supple tires on there with latex tubes while you're at it!

  • @Jamesthebikeguy

While Clark is right there wont be that much difference on the road it is still going to be a nice and fun upgrade. Good luck!

It would seem best to add the 3 pawls to go to 108 PoE from 54 when new so pawl ends have equal engagement, as there must be some ware occurring to the pawls contact points on an all mountain E-bike doing a lot of technical climbs in low gear. Correct?

Great video! I am in trouble with my 2019 fuel ex 9.8. The free hub is destroyed, on of the pawls has loosend and destroyed the free hub. When I first removed it, the free hub was loose. I cleaned it, took out the pawls and put the wheel back on to the bike. For transportation m.m. When I took the wheel off again, I am not able to take off the free hub. It rotates smooth, but I just cant remove it. So, dear expert, how much force can I use? Or are there any other tips? I am waiting for a new free hub and new pawls, so I dont need to take to much care about the old hub. Am I in trouble or are there some "easy fixes"? I have spaces for 6 pawls, that means I can put in all 6 and get a tighter and stronger hub? Thanks! Sveinung, Bodø, Norway

3 pawls, 3 springs and grease ;) That sounds like a crazy cheap upgrade to my new Remedy 9.7 with 27,5 LINE 30 COMP wheelset. I wanted to change wheelset and breaks, but yesterday came up with new idea regarding wheel - a 108t hub upgrade, and better rims. Any suggestions? :)

There is a rubber o-ring inside and on the wheel axis is a ringed slot. I ordered a new one (damaged the cap in despite using a rag between pliers. Also some of the springs got damaged. Ordered new springs and a end-cap! Will soon try it again!

You'll increase wear on the metal to metal engagement and prematurely wear out your contacts where they engage. It is rather rare to have any metal to metal contact without lubrication. Think of it as you would your car. How will your transmission hold up with no lubrication?

Hi, without the upgrade, I would presume the 3 pawls grip onto the hub at the same time (if they are equally divided at least). It seems like adding pawls just adds more noise to you wheel when freewheeling and not really increasing the amount of contact points between the 2.

  • @Jamesthebikeguy

    @Jamesthebikeguy

When going to 6 pawls you still have only 3 engaged at a time. The additional 3 pawls are clocked out of phase, thus doubling the engagement and decreasing the free travel by half.

What's the actually mechanical effect or advantage of doubling the number of pawls? If the ID on the ratchet teeth is about 30mm than each pawl will move a maximum of about 1.5mm (ok 1.72mm) until it catches the ratchet (engages). Given that the number of pawls doesn't change that distance, engagement cant be any quicker. Six points of engagement will certainly be stronger because there will be less stress on the parts but how often do pawls fail from a compressive force? 40 years ago when ratchets had fewer teeth, there was some advantage to more pawls because you could get a tiny 'dead spot' before the pawls engaged but with 30 plus ratchet teeth (54 on the Bontrager) that's not a thing. The noise aside (which sounds great - NGL) is there any way to measure this increased strength or notice any difference? Also what does 108 tooth engagement mean? Each pawl still engages with 54 teeth and you're not doubling the number teeth. 3 and 6 tooth engagement would be more accurate.

I understand that you have good knowledge of mechanics and how things work, there's no doubt. But i did this upgrade at the Trek shop recently and there is a very noticeable difference in the engagement when pedaling and when just moving the bike around, the ratcheting sound is twice as much, just from moving the bike around and letting the wheel turn slightly, the amount of clicks you hear is insane!

The hub is 2 phase, so the gap between the pawls vary, so when you add the extra 3 they engage as the other 3 are inbetween the teeth in the drive ring

you change your engagement of the drivetrain from 6 degree to 3 degree which feels instantaneous. more engagement points helps when climbing rock gardens, or climbing in general... only downside is the added friction (and noise). basically great for climbers and sprinters not so much dh or descenders. if serviced properly you should not worry about the pawls failing.

Hello, do you think that upgrade would be possible in Trek Fuel EX 5 from 2021? The hub in tech specs is described as "Bontrager alloy, sealed bearing, alloy axle, 6-bolt, Shimano MicroSpline freehub, Boost148, 12 mm thru axle" . There is nothing about "Rapid Drive". I've noticed that on EX 8 from 2021 the hub is described in the same way.
