How to Upgrade to Google Analytics 4? (and when should you do it)

Ғылым және технология

In late 2020, Google Analytics launched its new version called Google Analytics 4. It was previously known as Google Analytics App + Web.
From that moment, it is the default property type when you want to create new properties.
What should you do if you are already using the previous version (called Universal Analytics)?
In this video, I will show you how to upgrade to Google Analytics 4 but before that, I'll answer the question of when should you fully migrate to it. There is no need to completely ditch the older version. Actually, it is recommended to keep using both (at least for now).

    Hi Julius, got a lead-gen site (WordPress). The new GA4 was already created but unsetup along with an active UA when I entered the Analytics account. Did the GA4 setup (Analytics) and tag (Tag Manager) after connecting both properties (UA & GA4). This means my UA is still running properly or I've replaced it with the update? Understood that connect means to pass data between both. When I check the Tag Assistant (beta), GA4 appears along with my GTM like a "2nd" container (any thoughts?) Other doubt, the UA tracking ID was added through a WordPress plugin but did the Tag Manager tag as well. Now got two tracking IDs set and in Tag Assistant I see the "double-tracking ID" (only in incognite mode). If I uninstall the WP plugin it will affect my past data, right? Finally, I see the "gtag.js" from GA4 in blue but suppose is because it's beta. Thanks!

    Hi Julius, this is so helpful.. however I have a question, since GA4 doesn’t have views how are we supposed to have separate views for raw data, production and test site? So in GA4 do we create different properties for all?

  • @AnalyticsMania

    @AnalyticsMania

    3 жыл бұрын

    At the moment, there are no views and I don't know if they ever appear. Since the functionality of filters in GA4 is very limited, you wouldn't be able to achieve a lot with filters. So it looks like indeed separate properties might work. Or you could wait and see if GA introduces something related.

    GA4 and UA are different properties. When you create GA4, you create a property, not account. If you want to create a UA for the same website, just create a new UA property and then install it with GTM in parallel. I created an AMP container for one of my properties 2 years ago. It is running fine using Universal Analytics. I was able to create a "Google Analytics: GA4 Configuration" GTM tag for the non-AMP container in Google Tag Manager. When I select the AMP container for the same property, and select "Add a New Tag" the GA4 property tag "Google Analytics GA4 Configuration" is not available. Under 'Choose tag type' the "Google Analytics GA4 Configuration" does not appear under "Featured" when selecting an existing AMP container. I am concluding that Google Analytics GA4 Configuration tag is not available for existing 'AMP Containers' in "Google Tag Manager" . Do you know if there is a workaround?

    So, my understanding at this point is that it’s not actually possible to _convert_ an existing UA property (per se) to GA4 but rather only create a new GA4 property and connect some existing things, is that right? So effectively, if for example you had UA since 2015, you will not be able (in GA4) to retroactively view old data from the context of the new GA4 dashboard (e.g. if you wanted to compare Year over Year stats) but would instead need to manually compare old data to new or just manually go to the old UA property. Right? This makes sense to me since GA4 definitely doesn’t look backward compatible but just making sure my mind is in the right place.

  • @AnalyticsMania

    Well, this video was recorded in 2020 November. And in it as I said that Google will definitely not shut down UA in a year or so. Now we have the date of sunset - UA reports will stop completely working for free users in 2024. That is ~3 years later after the video. So everything checks out and still makes sense.

    @@AnalyticsMania Yep, I wasn’t questioning your advice from this (admittedly old) video. I was referring to the age of the older versions (GA2?) and given how long they were supported. Or, at least, I assumed the UI’s were supported for more than 6mo-1yr past their sunset date, but I could _definitely_ be wrong there.

    @@AnalyticsMania I know it was a bit of a shock to my team when we learned that we’d _likely_ totally lose access to the current UA UI (and the data, if not backed up and restored somewhere like Data Studio). Our site gets 1M+ active users per month but we built it relatively recently (2015 or so) and have only ever used the current UA. Was definitely a bit of a wake up call 😅
