The TBS Unify PRO needs no introduction. It is one of the top choices for VTx with solid build quality, good performance and great features (starring SmartAudio).
Its combination of only 2 status LEDs and one pushbutton is certainly far from easy to use. This Vtx is clearly not intended to be used primarily with the button but still, I have noticed some confusion when unlocking the TBS Unify Pro, as well as when saving the power levels, which I wanted to sort out with this guide.
This is QUICK GUIDE: How to unlock and set up TBS UNIFY PRO 5G8 HV using the button and status LEDs - Let's go!

    muteFPV yeah I love it! I have no complaints so far. After getting some gemfan props and a little tune(stock pids aren't bad, just not great), I can keep up with bigger quads like it's almost unfair. It takes corners so fast because of the low weight and it's power is through the roof on 4s. If you decide to get it, Id stick with 3s for now and found these pids to be spot on kzread.info/dash/bejne/eH2KyMignpfXf7w.html.

    Question: I've just started using this VTX with SmartAudio and the Betaflight LUA script on Taranis, and I wonder if using the LUA script actually changes the power output to 800mw if I haven't manually unlocked the unit? On a locked VTX straight out of the package, the LUA script will let me select 800mw, but I have no way of knowing if it actually puts out 800mw as I don't have an RF power meter.

    No, the RACE version goes up to 200mW. You can check the comparison table of TBS here: team-blacksheep.com/img/gallery/Unify-Pro-Guide.jpg The RACE version costs less so you should at least get a partial refund, if not a replacement. Just curious, where did you buy it from?

    @@muteFPV I appear to not be in Pit mode. According to the manual, my vtx is in unlocked deactivated pit mode, as I have both the red and blue lights on after startup. My smartaudio settings sill does not display the status of my channel, and it wont save anything. I use "save and exit" and "save and reboot" but all settings go back to default each time. Video signal is still sketchy at close, line of sight range, and 100% lost after 25ft line of sight. I cant find any other resources to help me figure this out. Any additional suggestions?

    Firstly I would remove the smart audio wire and confirm that the VTx works properly through the hardware button. Enter Pit mode and Exit Pit mode again to make sure. Then set the Band, Channel and Power values you want, and confirm it works as expected. If so, then there is something wrong with the way Smart Audio has been set up. Also check the info in this link (operational models etc), I found it in my bookmarks: github.com/betaflight/betaflight/wiki/Unify-Smartaudio

    what is PIT Mode?

  • @muteFPV

    @muteFPV

    Pit mode is a very low power mode so you can power on your quad (to set it up, troubleshoot etc) around other pilots that are flying, without causing interference to their video feed.

    @@mybluebelly in simple words PIT MODE refers to a mode in which the VTx transmits at negligible power (if at all, don't know if some brands refer to their 0mW setting as pit mode). They call it PIT mode because it is very important to use it for example in a race, when powering the quad in the "pits" (like the pits in car races), where you don't want to affect other pilots in the pits or in the race. This is why I am worried that maybe you power your Unify in pit mode, but the LEDs you described don't indicate that.

    Better use autosearch while the VTx is a bit further away. If it is very close the signal is very dominant and may make your goggle's autosearch to stop on the wrong channel.

    I should say your instructions were dare I say perfect..but there is a step no matter how many tyms watch this..*12tyms* yeah 12 I'm stuck on the unlock. Sometimes voice commands help some of us (slower kats). But I reiterate your step by step was perfect. I might just be frustrated because I can't unlock the vtx. After the 20sec hold I just get a blue led but can't go above 200 watts on output. I cannot read, see, or find the step I'm missing. Anyways keep up the fantastic work. This vid did at least get me to the menus!

    @@muteFPV What, so i can talk to the device and it will obey?? You`re not really telling me a whole lot here. I hate having to sit down for hours trying to figure things out but i don`t have much choice here. YT is a big help ofcourse :) I`m gonna ask you a couple questions and i would be very grateful if you would take the time & respond. What i`ve done so far is hooked up my 800mw VTX to a 3S 450mah battery and using a Triumph RHCP antenna on a separate battery. I have an FS Recon. First time i got a live feed right away so figured this was plug & play. Next time i had to browse around a little bit before getting the feed. So far i figure, good now all i need to do is get airborne. What happens is this: signal rapidly declines from a perfect feed upclose to a screen full of snow a mere 10 feet away. UGH! I`ve tried another CP antenna with the very same result. I tried with and without the motor system hooked up but no difference. I have my vtx directly behind an Eflite Park 400 motor (slowflyer) so the unit has sufficient cooling. What am i doing wrong? I learned how to toggle between channels, band and power today using the blue/red lights and managed to unlock the power setting so i set it to 800mw. I still don`t understand what channels or bands i need to select and if they need to match/corelate with eachother. Today i selected channel 4 and the band with 4 blue blinks. please tell me what channels and what band i should select and just in case i have a dud, how do i diagnose this? Yesterday i had to abandon my flight and go home, no fun :( Thanks!

    OK we need to start from the basics here :) It is too much to type so you will definitely need to dig into explanatory youtube videos or forum posts to comprehend everything. But for the problem you describe I suspect that your VTx and your Recon goggles are not on the same frequency. Channel 4 and Band 4, according to the manual of your VTx, should be F4, which is 5800GHz. You should set the Recon goggles also on F4, manually. If you scan manually or automatically (if there is such feature on the Recon goggles) when being close to the VTx, you will receive a video feed from adjacent frequencies, but this signal will degrade very quickly as soon as you move further away. Try setting both on the same frequency and let me know. Better to take everything one step at a time, I don't want to confuse you :)

    @@muteFPV Hey, and thanks for taking the time! I`m completely new to fpv so need some pointers :) Exactly how i have to set my vtx is strange magic as of today. So far i havent actually used the goggles to view the menu while tweaking my vtx, just looked at those red/blue flashes. F4 doesn`t ring a bell so need to check that to see if the shoe fits. All them number and combos are confusing a man ;-) I`ll try out your tip and get back to you on this tomorrow. Thanks a million & one :)
