How to turn sawdust into natural-scented incense
Just in time for episode 2 of What's in That Pile, we got our first snow storm of the season, which meant it was time to get as cozy as humanly possible. And few things help me up hygge factor during a snowstorm than by burning a little natural wood incense.
That's right! You can make incense out of nothing more than sawdust, water, and a little bit of binder like xanthan gum! It's super easy.
So, follow along as I make a little incense holder, bake some cones out of the sawdust I made while making the holder, and then get all sentimental about the smell of juniper smoke.
Also, I talk to the chickens about the snowstorm. They weren't in the mood.

I have no idea what juniper smells like, but your description of it at the end really made me feel like I know it for a second. Such a beautiful and serene video.

Finally the channel with both astonishing vibes and some solid and useful woodworking
Have you thought of doing audio book style calm readings of different books? You have the perfect calming voice for it, I’ve honestly fallen into such pleasant calm naps while watching your videos and TikTok’s, and it’s not at all because I’m bored or anything, it’s just the calm atmosphere of the videos. Love what you do ❤👍
For a couple years now, I've been trying to coax a friend of mine to be more contemplative and mindful, this video evoked thoughts of her in my mind, and I couldn't help but share it her way, especially with that ending monologue. Thank you, kind internet stranger, for giving me another voice to encourage others to be mindful with.

This channel makes me so happy. I’ve always had a love for trees, especially learning how to identify native species and finding their historical uses, so finding a channel that hits that right on the mark and does cool crafts with them feels to good to be true for my little niche interest 😂 It’s a bit of a stretch, but have you ever considered doing a video on the American chestnut? There’s not much you can do with the wood since it’s functionally extinct, but I think the story is fascinating and a good video topic!

Oh you'd better believe I'm going to be covering the American Chestnut! (I'd wager a reclaimed piece will be on the new map at some point)
Thanks to you, I can not help myself but to whisper chatoyancy into my friends ear every time we are in woodworking at school
I used to do woodworking but fell out of it. Stumbling upon your channel has reignited my desire to get back in the garage. Beautiful work!!
My idea is Justin should start a podcast where he talks about trees and gives info, history, and legend about those trees

You are my favorite person to listen to when my work gives me stress. idk why but wood just calms me down
It's like a cooking show but for wood. This is great!
This is really helpful as a bit of a incense cone making tutorial. I have a lot of difficulty with smells, and I like the idea of incense but not the actual smell of most types. Making my own out of sawdust would be a great alternative, as I already love the smell of a woodshop. Using Xanthum gum as a binder is something I never thought of. Thanks for the tip!!!

second that. I'm very smell triggered into feeling sick or getting migraines. I can't handle alot of stronger artificial scents, but natural oils I don't have as much a reaction to.
I love this series. It cool just watching you take a random piece of wood and turn it into something really cool.
You say that you're not a good source to come to for woodworking tips, but in fact, your the exact kind of person I'd want to come to for tips and information because you make it fun while also teaching us. Not many people are able to do that.
JD rewarding those who stick around with some of your best stuff at the end! Thank you for the beautiful words and images!
My dude, you need to write a book! You have such a way with words. A book on trees, uses, how to identify them, little facts. I think it would be amazing!
Poetic - both with words and with wood.
i usually don’t post comments like this, but this video was so good!! i’m just getting into woodworking, so it’s nice timing that i found your channel. you have such good vibes and i love hearing you talk about stuff that you’re passionate about. you have a new subscriber :)
Your channel is easily one of the most wholesome. And honestly probably the most wholesome 1 million+ subscriber channels. It doesn't even feel like a big channel, that's the thing.
I followed you for your story telling and fell in love with wood and trees as I watched you. I’m so happy about these longer videos on KZread now
The way this man talks so honestly is so, so beautiful to me, i almost cried listening to this😭
This is my fav episode. The poetry while watching the juniper smoke was a nice touch. I want to make my own incense now!
I love how the snow casually flows in front of the camera it makes the video feel cozy
I haven’t been to the States in nearly a decade and I’ve never been to the midwest, but still hearing you talk about the juniper and showing the pictures made it feel like I was there :) love your videos!

This is the only thing I regret not enjoying enough. My nose stopped working proudly roughly 2 years before lockdown hit. A specialist said I had a lazy or nearly dead nerve so my nose effectively couldn't smell. I've been getting it back slowly, but things just don't smell the same. One of my favorite memories oh just my smell was a trip through the California redwoods, and since then, I've been going to one day smell those trees again. For all of you who still can smell, cherish it, you never know when you might lose it.
You, poet!! Very eloquently spoken. You can tell a lot of thought was put into the details. You can feel the environment the smell put you in. 👏
That last section is pure poetry
I took a woodworking class in college. It was an actual requirement for my degree! Really! I loved ,loved loved working with the lathe!! All that sawdust flying and the smell of the woods we used ! And in the end I had a sweet little round top table with a turned support and carved clawed feet ! I never got to turn a bowl but thats my gift to myself this year.... bowl turning class !! Yay! Me ! Thanks for all of you wonderful videos! 🤩🤩
Dang, those juniper campfire lines were felt all the way over here in Tn. Thanks for your words at the end on this'n. I love when they're included.
That was one of the most comforting videos I've seen in a while
I also just began to appreciate November. Love the beginning of the hibernation season before the business holidays. Also......you're adorabley poetic😊
You keep telling us to watch your full videos and not only your shorts. And every time it is worth it, this video was no exception. Thanks a lot, Justin! Keep making great videos! Your pal from Norway.
lol I just realized I have a big patch of orange sawdust on my face throughout the "making the incense" portion of this video. I'm doin' great.

This. Was. Amazing.
I absolutely love chatoyancy, though I didn’t know it was called that until now. I milled a southern live oak log for my workbench top and it has some nice figuring and curling making some parts look 3D. If you don’t have a tree for Florida yet, I’d suggest either the southern live oak (also called cathedral oak in some places here in NW Florida). More common is the Southern Yellow pine that was logged for good home building lumber and still is but more sustainably than the clear cutting old growth days.
I’m so glad you made it over to KZread
Juniper makes me think of the high desert in central Oregon. Every time I fly into Redmond the smell of juniper is the first thing you notice. Excellent video
I LOVE THE SOUND OF CARVING
Scent is so powerful, whenever I smell vanilla I get reminded of my grandmother and her special butter biscuits she used to make for festivities, everytime I think of them I tear up because I miss her so much I wonder if she would be proud of who I grew up to be

Beautiful work. This is such a soothing video. That incense holder is just gorgeous, and now I'm inspired to smell my sawdust and consider keeping it for incense instead of sweeping it all up & tossing it out.
Never change, my dude.

I live in harrisville, I see juniper all over around me. I can't wait to go out and get some dead juniper logs and make some incense! (Hopefully it isn't all muddy at the trails)
Late to this video, but wanted to say thank you 🙏 The way you described the smell and what it evokes for you in the end really connected with me, being from the southwest myself. Cheers bro and God bless 👑

Love the channel, fantastic authentic content, well done! 👏
Juniper trees are my some of my absolute favourite species, specifically Rocky Mountain Juniper :)
Glad youtube brought me your page. I'm headded home from university for reading break soon and I cannot wait to make some red cedar incense to try and make me feel less "away".
Okay, so I gotta day, I've been watching your stuff on tiktok for a bit, and I was drawn to it because I do some wood working as well, and I really enjoy your vibes, your skills, and how much I learn from watching your content. I learned the word chatoyancy from you, and I kid you not, when I see it in a piece of wood (it's one of my favorite features) I can't not hear it in your ✨️chatoyancy✨️ voice, and it makes me happy, so thank you.
The term "chatoyancy" is often used in the context of gemology and describes the optical effect seen in certain gemstones, such as tiger's eye or cat's eye chrysoberyl. This effect resembles the slit eye of a cat and is created due to the reflection of light by parallel fibers, needles, or channels within the gemstone. When the stone is cut and polished in a specific way, usually in a cabochon shape, the surface displays a narrow band of light that shifts as the stone moves or as the light source moves. This makes the gemstone appear to be lit from within or to have a glowing line running across it, which is quite striking and highly prized.
My bf would love this! Beautiful video ❤
This is honestly so relaxing. Super cool, too!
Love your stuff tree man!
Man I love your whole outlook on life, sentimental yet driven to experience new things . I'm very glad I found your channel
I love your videos and how enthusiastic you are about wood. Also nice mustache.
Awesome video! Inspiring too. For me, the smell of home is pine. I grew up next to a pine plantation and there were quite a lot of pines in my garden. I loved that forest. And what’s more, my first dog loved pinecones. They were her favourite toy. I think she liked the CRONCH. So her breath was always pine fresh. I can’t see a pinecone or a pine tree without thinking of her. We moved to a farm about 6 months before she passed away and there is a very small pine forest here. It’s her forest now and that is where she has been buried. I looked it up and you can make pine incense. I think I will do that. I’m sure my dog won’t mind me taking a fallen branch from her forest ❤️
Came for the woodworking, stayed for the poem at the end. So good
I love this channel so much everything you say is teaching something and is also insanely relaxing, you’re doing amazing!
I will have to try this. Very informative, thank you
I get nostalgic from the smell of freshly sanded oak. It reminds me of the farms I grew up around.
This channel is so wholesome 🥰. Every time I see one of your videos I just want to pack my things and leave behind my very boring, work-until-you-die-with-nothing-much-to-do stressful life on the East Coast. West Coast looks so beautiful and peaceful. ❤
