How to turn protest into powerful change - Eric Liu

View full lesson: ed.ted.com/lessons/how-to-turn...
We live in an age of protest. On campuses, in public squares, on streets and social media, protestors around the world are challenging the status quo. But while protest is often necessary, is it sufficient? Eric Liu outlines three strategies for peacefully turning awareness into action and protest into durable political power.

+Double D you need homework. If you had someone telling you exactly how to do everything all the time at school, then when you left you would not know how to do anything on your own. Homework forces you to do it yourself, maybe with some help from parents

Actually, from my research I found that there are very few examples (if any) of a successful protest. Even massive protests like Earth Day in 1970, which was attended by 20million. That was about environmental protection. It seems that now our greatest power is our spending power, but it's also our greatest weakness. It is rare to find people who won't give in to the lures of Amazon. We've become slaves to convenience.

This might only work in countries like the US. But in countries decimated by the US and/or western imperialism in general, a protest or a vote can only do so much and are not the only solutions for change. To be able to get rid of the damage and exploitation of western imperialism in these countries, a revolution must be formed and armed struggle is necessary. Change could only be achieved if power and control is given back and remains solely to the masses.

Western Imperialism . Were the peace protests against Russia's invasion in Moscow trampled by western imperialism ? Were the hong kong and blank page protests of china crushed by western imperialism ? Were protests against Myanmar's junta defeated by a cabbale of western elites ? No. They were brutally suppressed by dictatorial regimes. On the contrary, people protesting in the west are afforded the luxury of protesting against democratic governments , where they can realisticly achieve their goals through popular support. So please be grateful that you live in a western democracy, even if it is flawed.

We must be careful with that statement though. Where is our end goal in the protesting? Most people today are simply authoritative people who want to enact their social darwinism or liberalism where the control of power is in the hands of a few. When everything starts hitting the fan, we must remember that only God can save

The idea is that when you remove all safety nets and social policies, only the strong survive and the weak die off, stengthening society as a whole. The problem is that they can't understand that they are just as political and bias (and that's not wrong) in defending the "normal" social structure or by not talking about this issues. When you put "what is posible" in risk you are being explicit and confronting an "implicit" way of thinking. That's the problem they think that its "normal" vs left-wing. Instead of implicit conservative vs explicit progresive in relation to the social structure given.

***** but we are rational and emotional creatures, always. Rationality is instrumental (being effective towards a goal with the resources i have) but the objectives, the goals, the reasons have emotional content on them, "my dream is...". Because it depends on what in means to me and how i feel about it. When people say that they are being only "rational" or objective they forget that they are always subjects. Also is a very conservative strategy "the rationally sound" it's not given, not when we talk about social issues, it is the "posible" thing in the video, it's not given, what today is imposible tomorrow may not be. Because we are not talking about "natural laws" we are talking about meanings and social constructs.

In the context of people living under authoritarian regimes, I believe this video provide valuable advice to prevent repetition of the rather messy aftermath of Arab Spring. However, seeing that most viewers came from western countries (I presume) I don't think the video really provide valuable advices because to have a fight that would have some kind of win, it has to be something extremely popular among the masses or there is some significant event to capture the attention of the public. More often than not, these issues tend to be trivial rather than the important issue that people should deal with but chose to ignore it because it's more convenient to do so (shall not list it to avoid provoking more angst here, but very prominent in mainstream media nowadays). Nevertheless, as with any information one receive from any sources, one ought to take it with a pinch of salt.

Expanding the possible comes across as "Demand the impossible". Don't go protesting for something people think is impossible, they'll think you're a bunch of morons. Get up and put the solution into action yourself at least once and show that it can be done before you start making any sort of demands. Who knows, maybe you'll learn exactly why its believed to be impossible. Don't for a minute think that people who are in charge of something don't know a heck of a lot more about it than you do. Show, don't tell.

How can you tell that they were unbaised? Yeah perhaps is more difficult to be baised when talking about natural sciences (yet not imposible, read social constructivism in epistemology and cultural relativism, if you don't believe me). But when talking about economics, politics and social issues you always analize from a place. I know that it seems as "normal" vs SJW but that's what we call in sociology "symbolic violence". That "normal" is not an objective place is just another perspective, a perspective in which you strengthen the "given" social structure. I hope you understand my point. My point is that is imposible not to be bias... what you think of unbaised is just the dominating perspective. Again read symbolic violence in the works of Bourdieu.

Spare me the verbose nihilism Agustin, you could summarize your entire paragraph to, "Social norms are totally subjective", no one is going to disagree with you there. Unbiased journalism is based on presenting facts and multiple perspectives and allowing the viewer to reach his own conclusion. Vice has routinely turned out one sided fluff pieces and promoted bullshit facts to promote gender and identity politics. Hence they are turning to dogshit.

Honestly, although protest is useful at some point, I think that people rush to it too quickly: it's very disruptive and people immediately resort to it to demand change for things that could likely be implemented through diplomatic means such as petitions, letters and politics and that would mitigate any widespread impacts on the public, who, during protests, have to undergo major problems living in the local area. At some point, yes, protest becomes necessary if you've expended all of your other means, but most people don't do that first.

So many people these days see "protesting" as an excuse to have a party. There's a lot of flag-waving and "share this meme if you agree" without anyone really putting in effort to make real change. (The thing is, I think a lot of them don't really want change, because then they'd have to find something else to protest.) The last guy to really make an effort and make positive changes in the U.S. was Ralph Nader, and all most people today remember him for is that guy who ran for president a couple of times.

I'm not sure the raising of the minimum wage topic was the best example to use. Naturally, it has both good and bad connotations. While most agree that higher pay for the bread winner would potentially give his family of five a better standard of living, it is the mindset of the low-income folks that needs some readjusting. Sure, it may be too late for some of them to make the change but they must realize that their entry-level fast food gig was meant to be a high schooler's first stepping stone job. The plan is to move on to bigger, better things upon achieving additional highly specialized training. It would have also been nice to not plan for a large family while being in a position where one would not be capable of providing for it. Unfortunately in some cases life just happens to you and sometimes you just need to stay at a job for a couple of decades. Rising tuition costs only make it harder to better one's education. This is all understandable. Here is the underlining problem though and I wish it weren't this way: we know employers do not likely being cornered into dishing out more money than they believe an individual actually deserves. With every paid employee come huge responsibilities and additional expenses out of the employer's pocket. Enter the massive appeal of automation. It will only get cheaper and a machine will not require biweekly pay, medical insurance, 401Ks, unemployment insurance or any additional expenses. We've seen Uber just about eliminate the taxi industry and self driving cars will eliminate the Uber drivers. The food and service industries are ripe for automation and pushing for raising the minimum wage will only lead those employees to dig their own grave that much faster. I should know. I'm in the design and engineering fields and I'm in the business of problem solving and all clients would prefer to always increase their profit margins. It is only getting easier to create machines that will replace millions of minimum wage employees and those jobs are never coming back.

People getting upset that the video is leaning left are misguided. the issue is not leftism, but liberalism/neoliberalism; nearly every example indicating that protesting is a viable means of eradicating an issue is still in sme shape or form still greatly lingering in today's society. The civil rights movement, while making large strides, has not solved police misconduct, mass incarceration that disproportionately affects black and brown people, or the underfunding of minority-majority schools. India is still heavily characterized by Western Imperialism and global industrialism, and over 1 out of 5 Indians are living in poverty.

Protest alone is far from adequate. The most important is a powerful and wise leader. One who has incredible ability and an equally kind heart. Every single movement are lead by great leaders. Gandhi, MLK jr, etc. Without people like that, movements will result in a takeover of others with greater ability but an evil heart. One dictatorship will be replaced by another.

The "no more job-killing regulations" example vs "expand what you think is possible" step is extra funny today because today, tech companies are laying off thousands of people like it's the dot-com bust of the 00s all over again, not because they financially NEED to, but simply because "everyone else is doing it, and the shareholders like it". Turns out the job-killers were the corporations all along. We in the USA also need to grow beyond our placation with how corporations affect policies and politics. "We'll never get the corporations to allow a livable minimum wage again, or universal health care, or universal basic income." Hey but what if we told corporations to shove it? Finally, protesters don't force out an old despised government. The military LETS it happen. That's why the military is often in charge after the coup. And if the military has no economic interest in keeping the citizens happy and healthy, well, who cares what they think of you, right? What are they gonna do? Protest some more, this time AGAINST the interests of the military? We've seen it happen and it's not pretty.

This video unfortunately misses one important point and it is that these same steps can equally cause either positive or negative change. If people intend to create positive change then they must must make an effort to understand the issue at hand by researching as objectively as possible and then making an informed choice. Without these precautions the next step "choosing a defining fight" could lead to ignorant single mindedness in a misguided cause. As an example: Say that people in a society start asking "What if the death penalty is the best way to solve crime?" and these same people did not make any effort to understand if it really is the best way to solve crime and whether the death penalty will have any long term social consequences. By the time they get to "choosing a defining fight" and defining the issue on their own terms, these protesters may already be to focused on the idea that the death penalty will work despite any other contrary arguments. Then if the movement gains momentum after an early win then you might end up with a country openly accepting the death penalty for a myriad of crimes both minor and severe.

Pretty different than the BLM method of protest. 1) Be a loud and try to take over anything even a memorial to promote your group. 2) Demand violence all while chanting about 'love' and 'tolerance'. 3) Act like the victim, scream that you are a victim, demand everyone see you as a victim.

while you're right that he doesn't have to be a different race to hate BLM, you're wrong in that it doesn't make you racist. when you disagree with it, or say "all lives matter," then that means you're okay with the way that things are right now, and we currently have people being murdered daily by our police. not all police are bad, as i have plenty of family members in law enforcement, but there is a systemic problem that needs to be fixed, and by disagreeing, that means that you're okay with this, which justifies our argument that you're racist.
