How To Tune Your Kalimba Without A Tuning Hammer (Without Destroying It)

Музыка

I admit, I had only tried some of these techniques a little before filming. I was very nervous! Fortunately, the safety precautions I took worked--I was able to safely tune the kalimba without the special tuning hammer using all three methods without damaging it.
If you're caught between a rock and a hard place, hopefully this video can find you.
Link to the gStrings app I use for tuning:
Android:
play.google.com/store/apps/de...
iOS (I've never used this one since I don't have an iPhone, but there are several in the Apple store):

If you haven't learned how to play the Kalimba, yet, make sure and check out this video:

    I just started wondering is it safe to tune my kalimba with a normal hammer since I dont have a special one. I found your video and really enjoyed it, thats how a proper guide video should be! Fun, straight to the point, and interesting! Thanks a lot!

    Thanks! I got two mini kalimbas recently but they didn't come with a hammer (the first one that arrived is Definitely out of tune now that that second one came and it sounds So much better)

    I have a mini 8 note kalimba but the keys are very tight and hitting them with a small hammer it doesn't move the key. I don't want to loosen the screws in case I damage it. Can I loosen the keys slightly? Otherwise I have no idea what I can do.

    I was playing beauty and the beast and my low c went out of tune and I don’t know why. Thanks! Edit: I didn’t want to try find a hammer and used a paint brush. Went right back to matching all the other notes! (I have mine lower than my tuner I just got says because I have always had them lower like that. They all harmonise nicely anyways)

    can you do it without the 1 pound hammer? like just hitting the tine with a screwdriver with an edge?

  • @SoundAdventurer

    @SoundAdventurer

    2 жыл бұрын

    it'd be a lot harder to control. a heavy rock against a screwdriver would probably be better than nothing

    in my case, i have the tuning hammer but even with it i can tune it at all because of how tight it is 😭 i really hope these work

    oof, hopefully you have some success. I wonder if there are other adjustments that can be made to loosen up the tines a bit. if the tuning hammer isn't working to change the pitch at all I think something else must be off.

    Those little tuning hammers are not very good either honestly. They should have a little concave section at the hammer end, that would make it less prone to glance right off the tine and into the kalimba wood (or other tines)

    yeah, I totally agree. I found my favorite tuning technique was actually butting up the screwdriver head, that way something is in contact with the time the entire time.

    Do I need to loosen the screws before hammering?

  • @SoundAdventurer

    @SoundAdventurer

    I think that depends... but I have not had to. You should be able to manage this with gentle taps. If you have to put in a lot of effort you might try loosening it a tad, but I'd try to avoid it if you can.

    What is the purpose of the red and green stickers?

  • @SoundAdventurer

    @SoundAdventurer

    I imagine the stickers that came with your kalimba are for labeling your notes. some kalimbas have the notes engraved, and others are a bit more diy with stickers. that's just me guessing though. if you have a link to where you got it from, then I can give a better answer.

    Thanks for reply that was nice. Instructions were anything but. I got it on Amazon a Newlam one that has a rating 4.8 stars 12620 I figured the green red stickers were only to differentiate the tines easier. Why red, green those colors in that order is just because I guess. I did leave a comment with concerns you can tell which one is mine. Be great if answer those questions for your next video.

    Omg thx i have a concert tmr and I accidentally left my tuner at school bc I left it at my friend’s house I actually kinda blame it on him because he just dropped it on my desk in the middle of a lesson, and WTF AM I SUPPOSED TO DO REMEMBER TO PUT IT IN MY BAG AFTER *6 HOURS*
