How to tune a snare drum with a TuneBot

Here is how to use the tune bot to tune a snare drum. The audio gets better in the second half for testing the drum
I have other tunebot and drumdial videos for snares, toms, and bass drums.

    What heads did you use for batter and reso? Personally, I really liked the uber dry snare. How do I get that real dry sound while tuning the snare 70s low? Nice video, BTW.

    You can use your other stick to hold the snare wires up while tuning. Makes it way easier.

    Great video man. Just found your channel. I picked up the Tune-bot a while back, then I moved so it's been packed away. Just found it recently and I'm just getting the chance to use it now. Thanks for the great tutorial. \,,/

    I have a terrible problem using the TuneBot GIG with the 2 of my snare that Ive tired. Cant tighten the bottom head anywhere near 400. Feels as if its about to split any second.. Also very erratic readings (The GIG has an automatic filter) but readings vary dramatically each time I hit the head within an inch of the lug the readings differ hugely each time eg from 042 to 276 with two consecutive taps. Got so fed up that after 1/2 hour I just gave up on it. This happened with a Birch snare with tripple flanged hoops and Aluminium snare with cast hoops. I even tried putting mongel in centre to kill excess overtones but still widely eratic results. I'm amazed that it appeared to work perfectly on this drum.

    Snares are tough with the tune bot.. Toms work much better. Make sure to put it on a pillow to mute the head your not working on. I get the odd reading here and there on my Reference snare but sometimes you just have to use judgment. If I am still low when you keep tightening it you will push past the odd reading. The little tiny piece of gel or a finger in the middle of the drum does help with the overtones too. 400 IS tight.. haha I have been really messing around lately with all my snares and I find 370-410 is my personal spot for the reso head.. Batter is 320 or higher. I like a tight snare with a loud crack though. I hated the tunebot for a year due to wild readings, bad sounding drums etc. One day I just managed to figure it out. Stick with it as the tuning calc makes it pretty awesome to use.

    I too suffer this with the tune bot Gig on the snare drums...so frustrating...Called Tunbot folks and they said it only goes to 400, and it helps for the reso to be in the snare stand, no pillow, but it's all BS....works great on toms for sure. Maybe you need to have the better Tunebot, not the gig.....argh

    I'd suggest a very small piece of moongel in the center not a full one. I don't have the issue with the tunebot very much but i get the odd weird reading. I leave the filter off most of the time. I turn it on IF I am having an issue. Maybe that is half of the issue having an auto filter. 400 is pushing it, but I don't seem to have much trouble getting there. Head seating sames to make a big difference. and sometimes you have to use judgement if the reading is out to lunch keep going past it. I also find the lug opposite to the one with the weird reading can be a culprit. Try re seating the head and see. The tunebot is not wrong per say, it is just a microphone showing frequency's it hears. If a snare is not round, bent hoop etc it can send you down the garden path.

    UPdate - thisi week I tried both Tunebot Gig and Drum DIal on a new snare drum which has 10 tuning lugs per head. I found that to get even tension around ALL the lugs I dont have to tighten some of them at all. It seems that tension from just 8 lugs applies itself around the whole head and I can leave 2 lugs completely loose. Also when I place the drum dial against one lug and turn another lug this effects the tension on the untouched lug. Point two. Even when I get the same tension tuning on all the lugs using Drum Dial .. the Tunebot gives different readings for those lugs that are meant to be tensioned the same. Not really sure what any of this prooves except - may as well not spend money and tune by ear.

    Curious, why are you needing to place your finger on the batter side head, when the bottom head is muted already by placing it on the pillow, while tuning?

    I mean, your drum is different so my numbers shouldn't matter. take the INFORMATION and tune your drum. it's the same process. I tune my reso usually 380-410 and my batter 300-350 or so because I like mine tight..

    I just got the "gig" and it is a PIECE OF SHIT. It is not possible to tune a reso snare side head with a Tune Bot. Also, the thing only picks up the lugs nearest it. Better off with a reference (guitar, piano, etc.) and a brain. Super disappointed.

I have about 15 regular drum keys I'm sure. but when removing a head it saves so much time. especially a whole kit. that Is what I was saying. sorry if I didn't mention that in the video. you can do it with a normal key. but it takes longer

    Pffft. Drums are not tuned to musical notes & they're not tuned to any rules except for how they sound to the drummer & the particular venue. Drummers use their own ears.

  • @beyondbetrayal

    @beyondbetrayal

    4 ай бұрын

    Incorrect. Anything that makes a frequency is technically a musical note. Many pro drummers and techs do this. No ones forcing you to do this, but when you actually tune your drum correctly (without a tunebot) it registers as a note. This makes it easier and more accurate than your ear 100% of the time. Your venues and sound guys will thank you.
