If you have to turn the High screw always go CCW first never CW.Then turn in 5 min increments until the motor slobbers and smokes under full power..then you want to turn it CW in 1 minute increments until the slobber just goes away then 1min further.Thats only if you must other wise have a skilled tech do it :)

So if you were to re-build your carb, what would you set your high screw too to start?

Hi. Could you offer me some advice please. My brand new maverick with a moster 185 MY22 engine feels weird. Iv flown it only 1ce. I’m using good fuel with 2% motul 800 mix as it’s still in the running in phase. Iv followed the Manuel and spent the usual 2hrs or so running it in on the ground. When I went to take my very first flight it felt weird. Not like when using the flying schools own moster 185. It felt under powered. My first take off failed cos it felt weird and the send attempt was successful but felt like I almost crashed after take off. I flew fine once in the air But on take off my instructor was saying FULL POWER. I always do full powers. But it felt like it didn’t go to full power. Anyone else had this issue.

I have not touched the high needle. Running 50:1 non ethanol with amsoil Sabre. Motor has 5hrs. Has never really run right. Mid range 4800 to 5500 was always rough. I tuned it by bringing the low needle 1min in at a time. I WAS able to get the motor to idle, transition, cruise, and full power perfectly. The problem is, I am afraid the plug shows it's too lean. After 45 mins flight the plug still looked new. No coffee color at all. If I richen the low screw to the point it browns the plugs porcelain, it runs rough and like crap. How much do you value the color of the plug? Do you think I need to adjust the high needle and possibly ruin my warranty?

Hello, I have exactly the same issue with my engine, if I tune it as this guide to get it to run good then the plug colour shows its lean if I back out the low needle just 1 minute of a clock face then it runs rough and lumpy on cruise power but the plug looks nice with a coffee colour,.did you get yours sorted

  • @warrenkral6562

@nickholmes6376 I did get it sorted about 2 months after this post. I stopped worring about the plug color as I found it takes a while to show it's true color. My secret sauce is... I lean the low needle to the point it bogs on quick acceleration, then back rich one min. I then check the cylinder head temp with a laser temp gun. I shoot to keep the average temp around 325 F to 350 F. I find one min rich or lean can change the CHT 25 to 35 degrees Fahrenheit. I run 66:1 saber, with non ethanol 89 and BR9es plugs. My motors (I have two moster 185s) both run perfect now. Also, don't use motul 800. Wayyy to much carbon build up for average type flying. Where I am in NC, I need to seasonally change the low needle one min plus or minus for hot or cold.

When on a carburetor tuning video, one says "The H needle- you don't want to mess with" is the moment I close the video. You tune H first, then L, then Idle. Braaap. Safe flights. L affects H, too lean L will lean out H.
