How To Troubleshoot Washing Machine Cycle Failures: Plumbing Tips for Technicians

If you have a washing machine that won't complete a wash cycle, stops on the rinse cycle, or drains as fast as it fills, then this video is for you. Sometimes simple plumbing mistakes cause a washing machine to act as if it were broken. Washing machine cycle failure may be a problem with the water supply or even the drain hose. Watch while I cover the common problems I've experienced as a service technician. These are tips all appliance technicians should know!

    Thank you so much for posting this video!! I thought I had tore my cousins washer up by using it so much and the drain hose had indeed fallen. I was able to tape it up on the side of the washer and voila!! It started washing!! I had even noticed before that it didn’t seem to be filling all the way, like the water line was low for a large load. But I taped the hose up to where I thought the water should fill and it filled to there. God Bless you!! 🙏🤗

    Thank you so much for this video. I had recently replaced the drain hose and thought that the longer hose would be beneficial to my washer but I quickly found that my washer would empty out the water prior to it completing the rinse cycle. The drain was way lower than the tub (causing the siphoning effect for my washer) so I cut the hose down and voila problem solved like you said. No need to call a technician to come look at it. Thanks again!! 🙏🏽

    If it doesn’t fill up enough to trip the pressure valve it will time out and drain. It may appear to be about full but not quite there. I still suspect the cold water valve. Will it wash if you select a hot wash?

    i have a RCA portable compact washing machine that is throwing an E4 error code (drain alarm) when it hits the rinse cycle. at one point it threw an E5 code (overflow alarm). it throws a code when there’s about 2-3in of water left in the tub. the water CAN drain, i was able to get the water to drain eventually the first time around. it just WONT drain. the rinse cycle begins, it counts down from 28min to 27, and it never counts down lower than that. the draining also starts off normal, and i can visually see water running through the drain hose into the stand pipe. after a minute the draining starts to slow down to a crawl. eventually the alarm goes off. if i manually skip the rinse cycle and set it to spin, it works fine and finishes the wash out removing all water. this all started when i washed a rug twice in a row. the first time nothing happened, and the second wash the alarms started going. there’s no clog in the drain hose, the drain hose is correctly in the standpipe, the filter is cleaned out. i have no idea what to check next

    I work on a lot of washing machines but I can't say that I have ever worked on an RCA. With my limited knowledge of these units I wouldn't be able to even speculate on the problem. Are these units commonly found in RV's. I don't work on these due to the limited space and the difficulty in removing them from the vehicle. I usually refer people who come to me with these issues to seek the help of an RV dealer. Thanks for watching!

    @@HarperandKnowles thank you for replying! i’m not sure if they’re used on RVs, from what i’ve seen online it’s comparable to most other portable washing machines. i have mine permanently hooked up to a hot and cold line though instead of using it through a sink. there’s nothing online besides the 11 page manual lol, so i figured i’d try here before messing around with it some more. thanks again!

    thats some slick camera work buddy😊👍 i like it. my BUSH A127QW washer was working fine for years as is but has started to trip the circuit breaker, it will turn on start to fill/run as usual for about 10 seconds then trips the breaker. before this happened i had noticed that wash cycle would go on and on until i manually turned the dial to rinse, then it would drain the water out and rinse and drain and spin the clothes out just fine, but now it just trips the breaker at the start. ive tried a cold water cycle too thinking it might be the heating element but no it trips the breaker as i described above. the fact its starting then tripping the circuit is bugging me as its working but something goes off, also the fact if it was set to drain and rinse manually before this breaker tripping started, it would do that so that suggests the drain pump is working as well. man if you could help me that would be great!!

    @@HarperandKnowles thanks for your reply i will try that. so you dont think the washing machine is causing this? my breaker doesnt usually trip and its definitely being caused by the washer running, if i switch the washer off and reset the breaker it doesnt trip anymore, then turn the washer on and run it it goes for about 10 seconds and the breaker trips.

  • @ohboy7790

    @ohboy7790

    @@HarperandKnowles so i tested to plug and the breaker by plugging in a microwave and running it, it did not trip the breaker. i got to the heating element in the washer and disconnected all the wires leading to it and turned the washer on, it drained all the water out of it that was sitting in it from beginning the wash cycle before, ran for about 1 minute then tripped the breaker. so its not the drain pump and its not the heating coil, correct? when it began to go into the selected cycle the water came on into the detergent drawer for about 1 minute, then stopped, maybe was a prewash or fabric softener section or something? THEN, when it switches to put the water into the main drawer where to wash detergent goes, that is when it trips the breaker!

    Thanks for this video. I think my issue might be a little different. My washer is 15 years old and has worked perfectly until this weekend. it's an analog Maytag and it has started filling and draing at the same time. I started a load late one night and it it continuously filled and drained all night long! We haven't made any plumbing changes so I doubt there is a syphoning issue. Is the drain valve stuck open? What should I check?

  • @HarperandKnowles

    @HarperandKnowles

    Something has changed. Make sure your stand pipe is higher than your tub. Pull the drain hose out and make sure there is an air gap. You didn't mention what model of Maytag you have. If you have an electric pump is it running while washer is filling? It's probably something simple.

    @@HarperandKnowles Thanks for the quick reply! Maytag model # MAVT834AWW. I'm not sure how the stand pipe or tub could have changed but I'll check this evening. No water is leaking onto the floor either...thank goodness.

    Okay Bryan, your machine has a belt driven water pump so unless the motor is running and the machine is spinning during the fill cycle that isn't your problem. It has to be a condition where the drain hose is lower than the tub or you have a siphon condition. There isn't a drain valve on the machine only a pump. You'll have to do some investigating to find out what's going on.

    @@HarperandKnowles - Your advice was perfect! You were absolutely spot on with your assessment. I pulled out the drain hose and immediately heard water draining. It was obvious that I had broken a seal created by unspeakable nastiness! Also, the hose was a little too far down the stand pipe.
