Great video! I now know who to ask for help when I get some auto downriggers. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. I learned a lot. I love the twist trick with the zip ties. I just learned this trick earlier this year, and it's the best! Again, well done!

Thanks Ben! 🙏 If I can't help with fishing, atleast I can help with electrical 😅. I take pride in pursuing all the issues on my boat and devices. If I can nail it down, I'll always pass the info forward. It feels really great to help others get back on the water. One time, I had someone scream, "Thank you!" On the ocean as my "how to fix/troubleshoot fuel injector..." helped him get back on the water. Thanks for watching and see you on the next episode! ✌️

I think this is what is wrong with my downrigger. Tried a new relay and the fuse is good. Thanks for the info.

@@bbtvfishingismyhappyplace I must have a very old unit as the reed switch is 'L' shaped. I'll probably have to replace the whole switch assembly. Btw, I placed a stronger magnet near the reed switch and the motor worked. Probably a failing reed switch but I'll replace the whole switch.

That will probably do it! Plus, you have a spare relay. Better hurry the fish are biting! 😃

I have the scotty line puller and motor seems to just hum when I pull the on switch. I have removed the motor and put the leads direct to 12V and works nice and strong. Now thinking it maybe this same issue as I believe this is used on that model as well. Thoughts? Thanks for the Vids!

By line puller, do you mean a downrigger or trap puller? If it's a scotty downrigger like mine, it may be a poor connection of power delivery onto your motor. Try tapping on the relay while running (in a controlled environment ofcourse, as your electrical will be exposed while doing so), check for signs of corrosion or loose connections/devices from power to the load end, measure proper voltage all through out starting from the output end of the relay and see where you're losing voltage. Remember that this is a 12v DC device, and working voltage matters. Too low, and it may struggle, as well if it's used, how well used was it? Do u have another rigger where u can swap electrical components to isolate the issue you're having? From the sound of it I don't think it's the reed switch like mine as, your relay is activating the motor, sounds more like power delivery. Hope that helps! Let me know what you see. Good luck!

Woohoo! I'm glad you got it sorted out. Corrosion will definitely do that. I just swapped my starboard side receptacle. Same thing corrosion that ended up melting the connection on the wire terminals. You might as well check the port side while you're at it. Now you're ready to fish again, Tightlines Dave!

it was the male end of the plug. One of my downrigger motors also seems a little slow. Now i'm thinking this maybe a voltage drop again.. Keep the videos going...

For us normies would this normally be covered by Scotty warranty?

I believe if your original owner then it would be covered, but you would have to consult with Scotty. I bought mine used, and having a couple of spare parts wouldn't hurt if you're ever mid trip and need it working asap. Hopefully, this video will help guide you through if that happens .

One of my downriggers doesn’t stop when raising the ball. It worked fine a week ago but now runs until clip is jammed in the reel at the end of the pole. Wondering if there is some stop bead that is missing?

Hi Doyle, thanks for watching and reaching out. 1. When does it do this? When it's on auto or manual? 2. A stop bead or auto stop swivel needs to trigger the auto stop switch in order to open the circuit. Do you have one installed? 3. It's possible that the switch actuator is sticking, the Reed switch is stuck closed, or the relay is stuck closed. 4. Does it go up on its own as soon the 12v plug is in the receptacle, without switching to auto or manual? Feel free to join our FB fishing group and we can chat there and share pics to solve your issue. facebook.com/share/FBvQRYgmCSdT3Wiw/?mibextid=A7sQZp Hope that helps, tightlines and chat soon!😊

@@bbtvfishingismyhappyplace normally I turn it to on and raise the ball. Yesterday it continued to pull the cable and the black bumper up into the reel. Your item 4 It will rise on its own if set to On and plugged in. I had to raise the ball until it got close to the arm and then switch to off. We have 2 of these units so I need to feed line out and look at the line configuration on the good unit and compare to the other unit. Boat is at my Son's house. How would I tell if actuator switch is sticking?

The actuator of the auto/manual switch might be sticky. Try operating to auto, then trigger it with a screw driver. Normally, a sure stop bead or swivel will trigger it. It might be easier to troubleshoot without the ball. The auto/switch is either getting stuck or your stop bead isn't triggering the actuator. Spray some wd40 on there and work the movable parts of the switch. I just checked mikes reel repair, and the part is $30 to $50, depending if you have the DP or HP downrigger. Find me on our FB group. Then, we can share pics and trouble shoot it. Hope that helps!
