How to Troubleshoot and Repair a GM AutoRide (Air) z55 Suspension

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is an in depth video showing how to completely diagnose and fix problems with the z55 Autoride suspension system, which uses Electronic Suspension Control, found in many full-sized Chevrolet/GMC SUVs and trucks including Escalade, Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Avalanche, Silverado, and Sierra. In this video I show you how to determine if your Air Compressor is functioning and how to replace it. I also show how to determine if your air shocks are leaking and how to replace them if they are.
This video might also help with repairing z95 and zw7 suspension systems as well.
I now recommend replacing your old shocks with air shocks made by Vigor Air Suspension. You can watch my full test and review here: • Vigor Air Suspension v... .

After chasing wiring and getting ready to pull the trigger on a new compressor, I thought let me watch a video on this. I found this video and less than 3 minutes in you had me face palm myself for not starting simple and checking fuses! Thank you sir, you saved me a ton of time, and money. The fuse wasn’t even blown, it had just wiggled loose. Thank you for the straight to the point video!

So being an old mechanic and watching you work and your description of the process, you should be an instructor for young people who could use your guidance and skillset ... I rarely find videos where I will see the person, who is describing and doing the work, where I don't find issues with their process. Especially trying to manage a camera while performing the task. Nicely done young man ... keep up the great work ... thank you for posting this ...

Thank you for the video. We bought a very neglected denali that has 194,000 miles. It still had original equipment suspension. Shocks were blown years ago and who knows about the compressor? It was always soft in the back so I took on restoring the air ride. Even after replacing shocks and compressor I still had nothing. Using your video I was able to troubleshoot and found the relay was bad. They had also pulled the 40 amp fuse. Without your video I probably wouldn't have known which fuse was missing. I finally have a vehicle with a fully functional rear suspension. Thank you again for posting the video. You're a Godsend

I really appreciate you making this video and being so thorough. I originally saw it after buying a used Avalanche that had that whole system blown out. I did watch it all, but had my sites set on one of those "leveling" kits instead, thinking that would be an upgrade. VERY LONG story short, after 3 months of headaches, back-and-forth with suppliers and shock/strut versions, I came full circle back to this. (Plan D) Just finished the job last night--with your help! There were a few videos out there that were good, but they always cut out the most important part--how it all connects!

Dude, thank you so much for this video. My dad's Escalade just recently had an issue with the suspension. I haven't started working on it yet but the compressor still seems to work, so I was just going to replace the shocks since I might as well do both so that they don't fail later somewhere down the line. I ALMOST bought the ones that you said are junk. I REALLY appreciate that. My dad has the money for the OEM part, so I think I will go that route too. With the cheap parts being so much cheaper, it seems that they are so cheap for a reason. Thanks again man! I will be following your steps when I do it :)

Now I bought an 09 suburban ltz and was able to diagnose the system using the video…replaced the compressor and shocks. Now the system works. Was able to see the rear left level sensor was bad as well. Before this I went to an INDY GM shop and after mentioning service suspension system…first thing the guy said was “that will be an expensive undertaking “…the. Proceeded to tell me it was best to just do the conversion to regular shocks

I also replaced my problem system with a Suncore system. It lasted about 13months, likely less because I was unware of how often the compressor should actually run. It ran a lot. I reach out to Suncore via email. It took sometime but they eventually got back to me. They said they do not do warranty repairs unless installation was done by a certified mechanic. Luckily, my friend that assisted my installation is such. But they then same back with check this, check that, check this other thing. After about 10 emails and a few months of run around I am finished with them. I agree with Farm Dad dont purchase parts from Suncore. They are not reliable and their parts are junk; per my experience. thanks Farm Dad for the post.

Converted to air shocks in the rear. They have air hoses going to the rear hatch to be pressurized. Going to test them soon and leak check the shocks. Some of the original air lines and wiring is still there. Hoping to get the dash lights to turn out. Also didn't see any ride height sensors. Know anything about the front shocks and ride height sensors? I may go traditional or lowered suspension in the future.

The spark meant that my compressor had a short. But it's possible for yours to be bad without a spark.

I'm a mechanically illiterate 76 year old but I enjoyed your video nonetheless. Guys like you are geniuses! How you can take all those pieces apart and put them back together and they work is a mystery to me. I just ordered a replacement air ride shock and compressor kit from Westar Brand through Auto Buffy for my 150K miles '09 Avalanche. I hope I made a good choice but what do I know? Your video validated why I think so highly of your special skills. You have a beautiful family, too. Good job young man! (Great hair, too.)

Great video thanks for sharing. Side note: I had a OEM GM dealership front strut side by side with an Arnott they were Identical both made in Mexico by BWI only difference was GM part # and GM packaging vs Arnott label and packaging. The GM pair cost $800 more and had a 35% restocking fee for returns. My original struts from the factory original were a different part #, but the dealership did not have that part number on file and assured me they current one purchased was correct. Arnott are same as OEM GM however there may be different levels of quality. Good luck DIY people

For the rear top bolt's. I just got some tin snip's and trimmed the splash guard some to clear the bolt. No need to remove the whole inner fender liner.

Amazing video! Just replaced the air compressor in my 2011 Tahoe LTZ and works great. Only thing Is it raised the back end to high. Do I need to replace the height sensors?

I ran into the same issue with suncore. Their air pump failed after 6 months and they would not respond. I finally gave up and disassembled it. The rubber gasket was garbage and wasn't installed properly causing water to get inside corroding everything. I went with Arnott for the new pump and for their reman shock absorbers. The Arnott air pump is still going strong 9 years later. The Arnott shock absorbers lasted 9 years before the rubber started getting tiny air holes and leaking. The OEM ones only got 5 years before leaking. I'm good with replacing them every 9 years and was happily surprised they lasted that long.
