There are so many ways to trim out a garage door opening. Some use bent metal too. Would you rather use PVC or metal?

Good afternoon Josh. I really appreciate your video on Trimming out a Garage Door Opening. I am in the process of doing the same project at my home. The only difference is that I am replacing the existing Brickmold. So my question is shouldn't I place the flashing behind the brick mold before I install it? Thanks for your reply and God Bless!!!
Do you have a video for this garage trims on weather proofing it. Thank you so much Josh.
Hey love your videos. Bout to start a garage addition and doing it all myself. My question is, what did you rough your garage door at? I am also going to be doing a 10ft door and will be having a concrete curb on either side so want to make sure I pour it the correct width
I’m using Azek for the first time (and actually first time doing any trim), and read that I should use a #8 trim screw. Seems like a lot more work than what your using (18 gauge brads). What is the better way to go?
Nice work. I'm using the exact same PVC brickmold from Lowes on a 16ft garage opening and can't get it to line up for shit. I've bought another set of PVC brickmold and getting ready to try again. Have you ever mounted 16ft pieces of the same brickmold you used in this video (I see you mounted a 10ft opening)? If so did you make a video of it? I have to join 2 pieces together to make the top trim and will again use PVC cement but how did / would you get it straight? Thanks
Great video! Subscribed! Isn't flashing suppose to go under house wrap? With how you did it the water that goes through the house wrap is going to get behind the trim yeah?
Thank you for this awesome video. I'm in this step currently and I can't figure out where to buy this PVC board and PVC brick mold. What brand did you use and where did you buy it at?
Quick question. Block home with smooth stucco coat in garage opening. Never installed vinyl trim seal because top right wall is out about 1" meaning seal might not cover the gap. How can I build it back out?
My old jamb is wood and attached to the trim studs so it will have to be replaced. I have a termite eaten header that had to be replaced.
Do you caulk the seams between inside wrap and brickmould? Thanks

I’m wanting to do this exact project to my garage door opening. My issue is I have a 16ft wide garage door and I’m finding its almost impossible to find the pvc trim in 16ft lengths anywhere. On top of that this whole building supply shortage is making it even more difficult. Would you know of a company besides the big box stores that sells pvc like this? Or would it be possible to join two 8 foot pieces together in a way that is functional (not letting water in) while also not being able to see the seam? Or is that not recommended?
Do you run J channel all the way to the bottom of the brick molding? My garage is 1 block above ground so my sheathing is about 8 inches above the bottom of the molding is why I ask
So my question is, do garage doors come in multi size or can I order a custom cut to fit the opening I just trimmed out ? I have a shed that I opened up on the side to make the small opening wider but didn't consider how wide I needed it. So I widened it out to a width that is proportionate to the size of the shed. The lean -to on the other side of the opening was DIY'd in 1941 and I'm thinking of tearing it down but need the garage door to cover the opening first.
What did you use to attach the pvc board to the concrete block at the bottom
Hello, I currently have water getting behind my trim on my 2 car garage door. I’m going to demo everything and replace w pvc, my question is how do I flash it? Just channel? And how would I go about nailing in the J CHANNEL underneath my existing sidding? Any help is appreciated! Thanks
Hi, you make great videos? Residing my garage and appreciate your input. For the garage trim, did you use any adhesive on the lower portion next to the concrete block? Keep up the great work! Thank you!
Do the seams where brick and trim meet ...need caulk?
Where can I buy a PVC board for the top of the jamb that is 16' long? I can't seem to find any anywhere. Would two 8' boards butting up to each other and caulked seams work as well?
how did you do the flashing above the PVC trim? Im stuck here.
Where can I get that pvc for a 2 by 4 by 8 fr garage opening?
So you don't need to flash doors? Also thought it was bad to run tyvek around the upper jamb
So if my garage opening after trim ends up being 7' 10", would that still work ok with an 8' wide garage door?
Hi Josh Excellent , 1- Don't you put 1" air gap between the Stone Veneer and Building Wrap? 2- How do you install the 1" Thick Stone Veneer? Thanks in advance Abbas

prepped my free cellular PVC molding by painting it (it was black, can you imagine?) and ready to install -- my issue is the garage is brick which I just finished application of lyme stucco. so now I'm wondering if I should install wood first on the inside of the garage door jam or can I fasten the PVC directly onto the brick? First time working with PVC trim. Anyone?

What do you do if your finished width is slightly wider than your garage door
finish frame same size as door?
Great video! My garage trim was metal, very thin cheap crap! The paint keeps coming off, purchased the PVC trim like you have. My question is do I have to remove the thin metal trim or can I just install the PVC on top of the metal trim? Jim AKA: RENMAN

You find that the 18 ga nails hold well enough over time? I typically use pluggable cortex screws after using finish nails to hold in place. Or even trim head screws and fill. Your approach is definitely faster.

I have not had any problems with finish nails holding. Nothing holds better than screws. If the nails starting to fail, you could always add screws later. Thanks for watching Dennis!

You could as long as it’s wide enough to cover the garage door sides. The material I use is only three-quarter and the 2 x 6 is a inch and a half.

@@TheExcellentLaborer They ripped the 2 x 6 down to 4 1/2 inches to meet up with the drywall which is on the inside of the garage. If I use the PVC jam it will stick out a little bit but I’m not too worried about that thanks

@@TheExcellentLaborer that's too bad, I'd love to see you walk through the process. I enjoy your videos and how well you explain everything. Do you finish trimming out the door after install or do the door installers do it? I'm thinking of the small PVC trim bit with the little rubber sweeper edge.
I was trying to figure out why you were going to pad out with 2x6 then realized you don’t have the typical build up of 3-4 jacks at the outside of the opening.
need to use a nail with a common head. Or a screw not trim nail.
Is that pvc trim avaialble at lowes?

Yes. PVC trim you seen in this video was from Lowes actually. I highly recommend it!
This is driving me crazy. I am removing two windows and reframing for a garage door in my basement. It is a 2x4 wall. I am installing an 8'x7' door, so I framed it in 2x4 studs leaving the rough opening width at 97 1/2 (as I want to trim to final with PVC boards). I've been told that the rough should be 3" wider than the door because it is to be trimmed with 2x6 boards. Is this necessary or can I just trim with the 3/4-1" pvc boards? Hope my question is clear.

I just purchased some pvc brickmold for my shed. I got the brickmold with j trim. Would you install this the same way?

Yes it should be a similar fashion as to what you see here. I don’t know exactly what you were installing it on but this is the best way I have found. Hope that helps!
Was your opening framed to allow for the pvc or did the trim make the final opening smaller then the door? Will this extra material cause issues with the opening being slightly narrower and shorter then the door?
@TheExcellentLaborer
3 жыл бұрын
You got to frame the opening to allow for the PVC material. So yes you make the opening 3/4” or 1/2” smaller all the way around.
@dominickcally2735
Жыл бұрын
The garage door will run along the studs inside of garage so if you don’t run the extra trim board length to the inside it will not affect. Have trim flush with inside garage stud depth
@kevindruhan2571
Жыл бұрын
So for an 8x7 door using 3/4" thick PVC trim, the rough opening should be framed (96"+ 3/4"+3/4")=97-1/2" wide and (84"+3/4"+3/4")=85-1/2" high?

You should never fold tyvek or typar housewrap in on an opening header. Any water that gets behind the paper will be trapped and forced to flow into the structure. We want to force water out and away from our structure as it flows down.
