I’ve watched and followed a lot of your videos and I just wanna say, you are one of my top favorite gardeners on KZread. You and your videos are awesome! I love your techniques and style of gardening and I’ve been following your advice for so many things and am having great success. I also love that you are so informative in your videos, providing great visual aid and explaining things perfectly without droning on about nonsense or lingering on information that’s not that relevant. You’re a fantastic teacher!! I can tell that you really do your research and have a lot of experience and I’m so grateful that you are sharing it with the world. Your videos about drip irrigation are absolutely perfect. The brand you recommended, the explanation of how to set it up and how it works, and the fact that you showed every piece and what it does was a major help/life changer for me and my garden. And your video about planting blueberry bushes was the most helpful and informative one I could find. I find myself searching for your videos about any gardening topics I wanna learn about and if you don’t have one on a particular topic I usually have to do a bit of digging to find a video with enough information. I just really prefer your knowledge. This is my second year gardening and I’ve developed a huge passion (some would say obsession) for it. 😂 My garden last year was “mostly” a great success, especially considering I got started a little late and was just figuring it out as I went. This year I’ve expanded not only my garden but my knowledge and resources as well. I learned a lot from my mistakes the first time and have put in so much time and energy into learning as much as I possibly can. I love that you show how to wrap the vines to the trellis. It's all your details that help me the most. There are other videos but they miss the tiny visual aid of something simple like wrapping a vine. So thank you again for the help with our gardens

It's difficult to set up the camera to focus on the shot. It all has to be pre-planned and manually focused. I'm glad the extra setup is worth it! I want these videos to be as complete as possible.

My grandma had about 6 berry bushes called olallieberry it pronounced like lolla berries. They were so good, it made the best preserves. It's a very underrated, or probably even more than that it's just an unknown berry, really tasty though. My bf just got a blackberry bush at Costco yesterday, I'm so excited to plant it and get a little mini arbor for it. I love Vining stuff, having a little mini grape arbor and berries, it just have a very classic look to it when a yard has berries or grapes growing on a little trellis/arbor like that.

Your video is so detailed and easy to understand. Rather than weaving and taping up to the cable, how about creating another parallel trellis as you have created to trap the raspberries between two cables, no taping required.

@@TheMillennialGardener Have very large tree roots all over the area which will not allow me to dig down far enough. (I'm in apt., not home.) The soil is also very basic and generally, blackberry and the others like slight to moderate acidic soil. Containers are my only option at this point.

@@shashakeeleh5468 you only need to dig down maybe 4-6 inches. The benefit of sunken containers if if you can give the roots some access to soil, it regulates soil moisture some. You could also place the contains one the surface, then bury them in a big hill of mulch.

He had a u-pick operation for a number of years and decided to go to containers to mitigate pest pressure. He has videos on how he built his containers (modified wicking tubs), his irrigation system and fertilization scheme. He shows all his methods and successes and failures so you can see what actually happens. Depending on how cold it gets where you are you may have to take extra measures for winter.

Great video, I have multiple berrie bushes going but didn't know that I should be mounding them, they are 2 years old and producing well, especially the Prime-Ark, those berries are huge and very sweet. I wonder if I can do anything to elevate them after the growing season.

You don’t necessarily have to mound them, but I generally have better results when I grow things elevated in compost like this.

Awesome demonstration! I wanted to bring a few things to your attention. Firstly, that stainless cable is expensive. You could swap that for high-tension fence wire for less than a tenth of the price. Second, those clamps are called crimping sleeves. They are meant to be installed using a crimping tool. Third, those turnbuckles dont offer much adjustability and are expensive. A better option is an in-line fence strainer. Just using high-tensile fence wire instead of cable would save you enough money to buy all the proper tools, and you can do four times as much trellis.

What about Boysenberries? Well, I know they're part of this family of beautiful berries, so I'm guess I can't go wrong by following this pattern. Frankly, the rain hit here in California and my garden bolted out of their pots and are growing all over the place. Living in the drought for so long, I was shocked how beautiful my plants were after they were almost washed away. Good video, thanks.

It's the variety. Some varieties of blackberries spread. Others tend not to. The Prime Ark Freedom berries are more erect and barely spread. They stay as a nice, neat clump. I don't care for this raspberry variety I purchased, honestly. I may remove it. It spreads a lot and the fruit is..."meh."

I like to plant everything high too 😉

cracks me up that you say blackberrys wont spread.... any where a branch bends and touches the ground, espially moist fertal earth, compost or natural ground cover/mulch it absoolutely will root... if you trim it every year, i wont spread as much, but ask any older northren california'r or oregonion, that has to clear acres upom acres oflusious wild blackberries every year, if they spread... great vid.... thanks

It will depend on the variety. Erect varieties don’t spread. You should be pruning annually, so canes air layering themselves should never be an issue.

Thank you, I appreciate that. In short, you just have to be careful not to pull too much tension. I made sure that I pulled the slack out of the cable, but I didn't tighten the turnbuckles so much that they would pull the U-posts in. I know the cover photo looks like they're bent, but that's because I took the photo with my phone on 0.5x to capture the whole mound, which has a fisheye effect. They're actually pretty straight and true.

I live in an incredibly sandy area in the midwest and UPosts might not stay put with any tension or weight on them. We do lots of fencing here on the farm, and it's a problem we address with any livestock or garden fencing that we install. Here I plan to use the same airplane line through a hole in the post and stake the posts (using tension in the opposite direction) to an earth anchor. That should help some. But of course we also have the issue of earth anchors not being QUITE as effective here in the sand, but it works. Hopes this helps in case tour soil is not quite as stable! This is a really great video and I love your ideas!

hiya. you might consider fish hydrolysate rather than emulsion. Emulsion has had a heat process and the oils removed. Not so with fish hydrolysate (brand: Neptune)

Could we see an update when the plants are grown?

Thanks for the video. I've been trying to recreate this setup. Today I started actually putting the cable up. Which brings me to a question... How tight is the cable supposed to be? What I've noticed is that I'll tighten one turn buckle, and then I'll go and setup the next cable and tighten that turn buckle.. and suddenly the first cable isn't as tight anymore. However, I don't have any more room on turn buckle to tighten it down further. Should I be leaving more space on the turn buckle to tighten it down further, or am I too worried about how tight it is? It's definitely not sagging, but I'm unsure of how tight it should be.

The cable only needs to be hand-tight. If you keep tightening the turnbuckle, you're probably pulling the posts over. Blackberry vines don't weigh much at all, so they aren't putting very much stress on the cables. You're only guiding their growth, because the canes are firm enough to mostly support their own weight. You don't need to overtighten. Just make sure the cable is taut and doesn't have any slack in it.

@@TheMillennialGardener Thanks. I did eventually kind of work my way through it, and that was my solution. I was also doing some grapes, so I wanted it a little more taut in some cases. But anyway, today marks the day that I finally got them all setup! Woohoo!

I'm about to plant some and do this trellis. Everywhere says to plant bare root raspberries about 2 ft apart. Could I get by with 4 or 6ft. Thanks

I don't have the space to put in ground, so I am planting berries in 17 gal totes. Instead of the airplane cable & due to budget limits, Can I use a less expensive wire? If so, Suggestions on how to string it on the metal posts? Thanks for the help.

I just keep my blackberries in pots. Might have to figure out some cages to keep them off the ground (black satin and primark freedom seem to be fairly prostrate), but they seem to be growing great and fruiting at the same time. The canes can get a bit desiccated in the winter and blackberries and the crosses are borderline hardy in some cases. We can leave potted raspberries outside all winter without issue. Really love the primocane varieties. They're simple. Your yard is coming along really nicely! Can really see all the work you've been putting in. Might be worth doing a seasonal 'yard tour'.

NM Nate thank you. Yes, I would love to make a before-and-after this fall before things lose their leaves. It has really been a ton of work but I’m happy with the progress. I will be developing the southern fence line next season.

How far apart did you space your posts? And what is the recommended spacing for the plants? I have 5 marionberry and 5 boysenberries to plant. Planning on doing 2 long trellis systems.

Can you use the larger bolt cutters instead of the smaller hardened bolt cutters to cut the aircraft cable? Thanks for the video!

No. Those bolt cutters will not cut the airplane cable. The airplane cable is soft and needs actual hardened wire cutters, similar to something that can cut copper electrical cable.

@@TheMillennialGardener Thanks! Turns out we had a pair of bike cable cutters on hand that worked perfectly. I built the trellises following your guide and they turned out great, thanks for the detailed tips on the cable, turn buckles, sizing, etc. I also added earth anchors to our setup to add more stability since our ground is a bit soft.

Can I plant all my berries together. I have a blackberry grape and blueberry already in the ground about three feet apart. I just planted a months ago. I just purchased another blackberry a blueberry and a raspberry. And I'm not sure if I'm planting correctly and a lot of videos are focused on one berry. Great video I will definitely be installing a trellis system soon

It depends on the variety. Some clump, some spread. You'd have to research your variety and find out if it has a habit of spreading. My Prime Ark Freedom blackberry stays pretty clumped and compact, but this raspberry has an annoying habit of spreading and will require maintenance. You'd have to plan the planting out based on its tendency to spread.

I would really like to add this Freedom raspberry to my garden. I do not have in ground or raised bed space available, but I do have some 20 gallon fabric grow bags. I know you've said that you don't recommend planting trees, such as citrus, in the bags. Do you think it would work long term if I planted the blackberries in the 20 gal bags and trellis with cattle panel? Thank you

I discourage growing perennials in grow bags, in general. The reason why is because every 2-3 years or so, you're going to have to remove those blackberries, prune the roots and refresh the potting mix. The potting mix breaks down into silt over time, so you need to refresh that mix. When you do this, you're going to have to rip the roots out most likely, because some of the roots may weave themselves into the fabric. The good news is, if you do this during the winter when the roots are dormant, you can bang them up a lot and it shouldn't hurt the roots since blackberries are extremely tough to kill during dormancy and can be dug up without much worry. I think it'll be harder for you to do this in a grow bag, but you should be able to do it without damaging the plants. I would personally get a higher quality container, but it is feasible.

How do you keep the mulch/dirt from running off and exposing the roots when it rains?

It's actually surprisingly easy. I put down a compost layer and a natural, hardwood mulch layer, and what happens is the mulch becomes interlocked with a fungal web. Mycorrhizal fungus grows all over it, so the mulch layer is "glued together." It doesn't matter how hard it rains, because it becomes a locked-together, single functioning organism. It's possible that you could get some washout when you immediately put the mulch down, but I generally put my mulch down early in the season before we start getting hard downpours. I don't mulch during the summer when we get tropical deluges, because then it can wash away. Mulch heavily during the, winter or early spring before the more violent precipitation begins.

Great video with so much helpful into!! I purchased a mature blackberry in a large pot, has 5 stalks that are about 1 meter tall each, do you no if i should cut them down? Or do i leave them and they fruit in the season? The seller told me that it already did fruit last year

If they are new canes, you should leave them because most varieties of blackberries fruit on the previous year's growth. If you prune off new growth, you will not get any fruit the next season. If you cannot tell which growth is new, what you should do is just let the plant grow naturally and keep careful note of the old canes next season. You can put some tape around the existing canes in the beginning of the season. Then, when fruiting is over, cut off all the old canes with tape around them and leave the new growth for next season. You can basically tag them. That's the safest way to ensure fruit next season.

Do you have any suggestions on how to keep the birds from eating all the blackberries? They ate every single one of mine last year!

Hi, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I can't find a nut that fits the Hillman 4277 Stainless Steel Screw Eyes (#8 x 1-5/8") from Amazon that you linked from your store. Since I didn't find the nuts referred to in the video in your Amazon store I went to Lowes. I found the 1/4" stainless steel nuts and but they were too big. Can you link to what you used? Thanks!

You forgot to top the primocanes on blackberries. They produce fruit on two years old canes called floricanes, that grows from the primocanes.

I have a chain link fence which I have used to train my Marionberries, my neighbor doesn't mind because she gets to pick the berries on her end, but if you have an adjoining fence confirm with you neighbor first

What kind of dirt did you make the mound with? Just regular top soil? I’m in Wake County with lots of clay

It is pure compost topped with shredded hardwood bark mulch.

How will the trellis support future growth? Say the next 6 feet. Do you to tape the new growth along the wires?

Growth will be managed via pruning. Most of my blackberries are primocane-fruiting, so you can literally prune them down to the ground if you wish, because it's the first-year's growth that fruits for you. It's a real game-changer. For the floricane-fruiters, you can cut the primocanes back to eye-level and let the floricanes come off the first 5-6 feet of growth so it never gets that tall. Alternatively, you can take strong vinyl tape or string and tie them up so they clump together and secure them to the airplane cable. I recommend erect/clumping types, since they are easier to control.

Can this be used with just 2 U posts and the top cable in raised beds?

Yes, but you may not be able to make the trellis as large. You’ll want to make sure the cable has enough tension to tie the canes to it.

Do you mean the roots are spreading? Some varieties of blackberries are spreading-types. I would recommend growing a variety that doesn't spread much. The varieties I'm growing, Prime Ark Freedom and Navajo Thornless, don't spread much. If you mean they are simply growing a lot of vegetation outward, you just need to tie them up. Grab them and tie them upward.

Do you think it would be worth planting strawberries in the bed as a living mulch? I don't think strawberry roots go very deep either but I don't know.

Strawberries probably won't be the greatest mulch because in many climates like mine, they're fairly evergreen. Even when the leaves die back, they don't drop a ton. What they are good for is living ground cover for weed suppression, though.

T-posts are a lot thicker than U-posts, so I doubt U-posts are as strong. However, a couple blackberries are going to be no challenge for a steel U-post. Blackberries don't weigh down too terribly on the supports, though, because the canes are pretty erect. I just use the trellis as a guide, not as a support structure.

Where did you get your eye bolts and nuts? Are they 1/4"x what? No washers?

The threads don't matter. All that matters is that the threading of the nuts match the eyebolts. You don't need a washer. At least I didn't with the design of the posts.

Did you amend the soil you planted into?

The mound itself is pure compost. It's just a massive hill of compost that I had trucked in and wheelbarrowed over, then topped with mulch.

I do not see the link to all the hardware and list of needed items. Please help me

If you're talking about a product like Parafilm, no, because it is biodegradable. You need a tape that will not degrade and is UV resistant.

Compost is easy to make, just make a few holes in the yard and toss biodegrable stuff in them cover with a board and harvest at the end of summer

Would this work for thornless blackberry?

All three plants are from Burpee's website.

Note you can use cotton string or twine to tie stems to the trellis, which are natural materials and are just as effective as vinyl tape, which uses toxic petrochemicals during manufacture and contributes to environmental contamination and plastic pollution. Just make sure to leave a little slack so as not to constrict the stems.

Your dog doesn't go nuts on that fish fertilizer? I put that stuff out on some plants and if I don't fence it off, there's a huge hole by the plant next morning

When we first got Dale, we went crazy over every scent. But he was a rescue, and he lived on the streets and was very food insecure. Over the years, Dale has become much more food secure. I also take him out into the garden and I let him work with me. He knows exactly what fish emulsion is. He's seen me use it 100 times, and he always sniffs the bottle. He recognizes the scent, he knows it isn't food, and because he is no longer food insecure, he is not a scavenger anymore. If your dog is digging up the ground after fish emulsion application, you may be able to fix that behavior by making sure your dog is always around you while you're fertilizing so they understand that scent is not food. If that still doesn't work, it may indicate the dog has some type of nutrient deficiency or deficiency in probiotics, which is common if they only eat dry kibble. A daily probiotic vitamin or supplement may fix that over the longterm. If the dog understands that it isn't food, and their gut health is good, there should be no reason why they'd dig.

That will depend on the variety you purchase. Some varieties of blackberries are called 'erect blackberries' and do not spread. This is what I grow.
