How to treat Tail rot in Bearded Dragons? - Does my Beardie have tail rot? - Cookies Critters

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Welcome to Cookie's Critters.
Today we are discussing how to diagnose Tail rot in Bearded Dragons and how to treat tail rot in Bearded Dragons. Our first recommendation is to seek expert help through a specialist reptile veterinarian. Sometimes this can take time and while you are waiting for your appointment we have included a home remedy to hopefully prevent the tail rot from spreading.
With any type on injury or disease we recommend that you remove any loose substrate and replace with clean paper towel. This can prevent further infection.
Neosporin or Tricin (in Australia) is an antibiotic cream that is used to treat infected wounds. Make sure you use a product that doesn't contain pain relief. Always discuss health concerns and treatment with your veterinarian prior to use.
We are reptile breeders in Western Sydney and this channel is to educate our customers and followers. The reptiles that we breed are Central Bearded Dragons, Pygmy Bearded dragons, Knob tail geckos, and Northern Velvet Geckos.
In the future our expansion will include Blue tongue skink morphs, carpet pythons and green tree pythons.
For a list of reptiles that we have for sale and care sheets on the animals we keep, check out our website www.cookiescritters.com.au

    Guys other causes for tail rot is stuck shed at the tip of the tail. The dried skin becomes tight and constrict the tail until the tip falls off. Make sure to inspect your reptiles during and after they shed. If they need any assistance with removing stuck shed my recommendation is to soak them in warm water for about 20-30 minutes. If the old skin is still stuck there are products to soften and remove stuck shed.

    My anole has been going through his shed for a few days, but when I woke up this morning, I noticed his tail is missing a very small piece off the end of it. I’m guessing this is because a piece of dead skin tightened too much and it fell off, but I’m worried about whether something is going to spread to the rest of his tail? Do you know if this is going to affect him long term? Or will the tiny piece grow back and he’ll be fine?

  • @CookiesCritters

    Harley Quinn depending on the species will determine the regeneration time. Green anoles can take up to 2 months to fully regenerate their tail. Larger iguanas can take a year to regrow. This is very similar to our geckos here in Australia. When the tail grows back it will never look the same though. The genetic make up of the tail will also be different. Rather than having bones the tail will have cartilage instead. The tip of the tail coming off could have been from a retained shed or even an insect bite. As I mentioned in the video if you have any concerns you should seek advice from a reptile specialist veterinarian. Especially if the tip still has an open wound. I hope that this has answered your question

    Not sure if you'll see this, but i came home today and noticed my bearded dragons tail was bloody about a half inch up from the tip of his tail. He's almost 10 years old and is going through a shed. The tip of his tail was not black. It almost looks as if he tried to bite it himself. I gave him a bath and soaked him then put basic neosporin on it. No longer bleeding, but the tip of his tail seems pretty mangled. Amy advice would help.

    When I had gotten my most recent beardie she had stuck shed on the tip of her tail and it was starting to cause tail rot and bends in the tail (still don't understand the kinks in the tail), the stuck shed luckily came off after a good soak and her tail has since started straightening and returned to it's normal colouration. Before we removed the stuck shed she didn't let anyone touch her tail, now she loves having her tail stroked.

    As the skin dries and ages, it becomes tighter and begins constricting the limb. It can cause amputations and pull the limp in abnormal directions. I rescued 2 Pygmys that had years or stuck shed on them. The poor little things could hardly even walk.

    Great video- I'll try the Betadine first- my beardie's tip of his tail is black, shreddy looking and I'm pretty sure it's tail rot. I think he got it from his tail always being in his water when he pearched on his branch (we moved the water). He also has small 0.5?mm round spots on the inside of his tail a few scattered down the latter 1/4 towards the end of the tail- any idea what it is? (think pores- they look like pores but aren't...they're dark spots).

    My bearded dragon has seemed sick the past week (not eating as much) but for the past 4 days she’s started to seem like she’s getting back to her old self. She’s is around 6 months and has a darker coloring to her and has for the past month Id say had a curve to the tip of her tail. Today it was loose and fell off *just a tiny bit but I looked it up and just today learned about tail rot*. Should I try the at home remedy (or is that only for before it falls off) or for sure take her to the vet? I’m just worried it’s going to cost a lot and might not even be needed if I can try to do it from home?

  • @CookiesCritters

    @CookiesCritters

    3 жыл бұрын

    I would recommend starting the home treatment immediately and book a vet consult ASAP. Doing the treatment will reduce the risk of an infection spreading. The bent tail was from either a bite to the tail before you bought her or she retained some of her previous tail shed skin. A visit to the vet will determine if you need part of the tail amputated or just antibiotics.

    Regular old water will work. All you have to do is just soak that stuck shed part for around 30 minutes. If it’s in a part that is kinda hard to soak. I grab a napkin and soak that full of water and fold it into a square as big as the stuck shed. Then after that 30 minutes, I’ll grab a tooth brush and try and gently brush it off.

    Their tail will change colour and darken with stress, environmental changes like temperature and hormonal changes. The biggest ID factor is the tail tissue dying and starting to fall off. Usually this is attributed to an injury or retained shed.

    ZR Nitro they will go darker if they are sick, stressed, cold or hormonal. Without seeing pictures of her of the enclosure it is very hard to say. If the beard stay black all day and her enclosure temps are appropriate you can rule out being cold. If she can see other dragons, or animals it could be hormones and stress. A quick visit to the vet for a blood test and fecal screen is relative inexpensive and will rule out any health issues.

    I need some help. About a month ago I got a baby beardie. Now nearly five months old. We got him from a pet store which is where I think the tail rot came from. I can’t take him to the vet because my parents don’t think he needs one. He has tail rot up a little less that half of his tail, and something wrong with his eye from being on loose substrate. (He’s now on reptile carpet). Will these cures get rid of the tail rot, or will I absolutely need to go to a vet? Please help.

    Bre S. the betadine treatment will definitely improve the tail rot. If the tip is during and falling off, your beardie may need a vet to amputate the tip. The problems with the eye can be dehydration, irritation from substrate or retained shed.

    How can we tell if the tail is naturally darker or if the tail has tail rot

  • @CookiesCritters

    The WinterBear a dark tail can be a sign of trauma, stuck shed skin and it can also just be a natural colour. Tail rot will cause the tip of the tail to fall off. The dark colour will progress up the tail. If you look is up on FB you would be able to PM me a picture of the tail.

    yuzukilovesducks :v it depends on what lizard. If a bearded dragons tail falls off because of tail rot it will not grow back. Usually surgery is the best option in severe cases to remove the dead tissue and prevent it from spreading. Some geckos and skinks will regenerate their tails.

    karasu kujo beardies shed every 2-4 weeks at this age. It will take a few days for the skin to be ready to lift. Don’t excessively soak your beardie. Areas that you need to watch are the toes and the tip of the tail. If they have sand or rough branches in the enclosure they will rub the old skin off themselves.

    Try the betadine solution. Or even try yellow lysterine mouthwash. Best to ask the vet if they have payment options.

  • @CookiesCritters

    @CookiesCritters

    The betadine solution will either clear it up or slow down the progress of the rot enough for you to sort out medical intervention. An vet consult and amputation is relatively inexpensive. If left untreated your bearded dragon will suffer and potentially die.

    How do we treat mouth rot in a bearded dragon?

  • @CookiesCritters

    @CookiesCritters

    3 жыл бұрын

    Mouth rot can only be treated by a veterinarian. If your bearded dragon does have mouth rot it will need antibiotics and possibly surgery. It is also important to know how your beardie contracted mouth rot. Was it through an injury that led to infection or improper enclosure hygiene. Knowing the cause will also help you prevent it in the future.

    Bearded dragons don’t generally shed in one piece. They might shed one arm one day then half their head. It makes it hard to get a good picture when they are always shedding 🤣 If your dragon has rough surfaces to rub against, the dragon will be able to manage its own shed skin. 👍

    Light Fish it certainly can. If they are housed together than bitting can occur and create infection leading to rot. Even having loose decorations such as rocks, beaches and ornaments can fall creating a crush injury. The main reason in adult would be stuck shed constricting the tail and creating an amputation. Any open wound can start a rot
