Small Size: Fleas are tiny insects, typically measuring between 1 to 4 millimeters in length. Despite their small size, they are capable of jumping relatively long distances compared to their body size.
Parasitic Nature: Fleas are ectoparasites, meaning they live on the outside of their host's body. They feed on the blood of mammals and birds, including humans, dogs, cats, rodents, and birds.
Hard Exoskeleton: Fleas have a hard exoskeleton that provides protection and support for their body. This exoskeleton is also water-resistant, allowing fleas to survive in various environments.
Life Cycle: Fleas undergo complete metamorphosis, including egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The entire life cycle can take as little as a few weeks or as long as several months, depending on environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity.
Reproduction: Female fleas can lay hundreds of eggs during their lifetime, typically laying them on the host or in the host's environment, such as bedding, carpets, and cracks in floors.
Jumping Ability: Fleas are exceptional jumpers, capable of jumping up to 150 times their body length. This remarkable jumping ability allows them to move quickly between hosts and evade capture.
Feeding Behavior: Fleas use specialized mouthparts to pierce the skin of their host and feed on blood. They inject saliva containing anticoagulants to prevent blood clotting, which allows them to feed continuously for extended periods.
Health Risks: Fleas are vectors for various diseases and parasites, including plague, typhus, and tapeworms. Their bites can also cause allergic reactions in some individuals, leading to itching, redness, and discomfort.
Resilience: Fleas are highly resilient insects capable of surviving in adverse conditions. They can withstand extreme temperatures, starvation, and pesticide exposure, making them difficult to eradicate once they infest a home or environment.
Control and Prevention: Effective flea control involves treating both the host animal and the surrounding environment. This may include using topical or oral medications for pets, vacuuming carpets and upholstery, washing bedding and pet belongings regularly, and employing insecticides or flea traps as needed.
