    Thank you sir! Appreciate you sharing your knowledge here. I have to transplant a small lemon tree at my mom's house. It's slightly shorter than yours here, so this seems to be a good example for me! My main concern was capturing the root ball, so I think you've answered all my questions for me here. Thanks!

    Holy guacamole, Batman! Thanks a lot for the tutorial. That was a very clear and sobering demonstration of what a task that actually is and has let me know that I'm going to have to seriously rethink my intention of trying to move 19-20 fully mature tea plants (comparable in diameter to your demo tree) to the other side of an already crowded tea field. Unfortunately, too, there's only about 2 ft. between the bases of most of the plants, so on two sides of each plant there is absolutely no room to maneuver. Basically, it'd be like relocating a couple of 10-plant hedges. Nevertheless, the land that they occupy needs to be cleared for the installation of a 20-ton water tank. I wonder to what extent (if any) I will need to clear the ground of remaining roots so as not to cause any future problems with the foundation that the tank will set on. Anyway, that's my problem, not yours. Muchas gracias for the education and bless you for your service to others.

    True it is a lot of work to transplant a tree. Using a pipe is a good method but in this lawn it should get plenty of water. Thank you take care!

    @@BinoH Could I ask some advice since there’s conflicting advice on the web? I have a 25y old apple tree which I need to move. The trunk is not too thick since it grew under the canopy of a willow tree. I will use your calculations in assessing the root ball dig size, but in your opinion, would an old tree like this survive such a move? It’s either move it or cut it down, and I would prefer to risk moving it, according to your guidance. Thanks 🙏

    I have a small southern magnolia tree that is in between the concrete walkway and driveway so there is not enough space for me to dig for the roots. so if I cut the roots underneath the concrete, will the tree die because I want to plant it in bigger area?

    It would be a good idea to start watering the tree you plan on transplanting a few weeks a head of time so it won't be under stress. You don't want the soil wet but it's good if it moist.

    Hi I have a question for you; I am moving my plants from the front garden to the back; the problem is that many of these plants do not have a place yet (I'm still planning the new garden); will i be able to put them in large pots, waiting to be put in the new place?

  • @BinoH

    @BinoH

    It's possible but a lot depends on each type of plant some are hardier than others and also the if they are healthy.

    @@BinoH thank you for the reply. I took a rhododendron off the soil this afternoon, and I was appalled that in 2 years the root ball had remained identical... Not even one little root was added. So that one I removed into a pot without scruples. But there are a griselina and its companion the photinia that have become so large i can only hope for cuttings... What a shame! I'm sure the new tenants will cut them down!

    My understanding get diameter one foot from soil grade and times each inch of diameter to 10 or 12 inches of soil. A lot bigger of a production. backhoe crane needed and you also need to build a box around the rood system. kzread.info/dash/bejne/dHqIzJKhfZaqeLA.htmlsi=0L-ymxeEO5fCOjYm

    You can if you use a diameter tape but if you're using a regular measuring tape you'll need divide by pie to get the correct diameter.
