It's over 141 years old. Bell invented the photo phone in 1880. He used sunlight and selenium cell.

fun fact: this kind of transmission is called light fidelity or li-fi for short, my partner and i did extensive research on it and even won two science fairs at the county level, we even tried a long range version which can be used for disaster aversion, works like a charm up to half a mile even with a pretty cheap laser, works up to many miles with a slightly better laser

How does he connect the batteries with eachother to create a charge for the aligator clips?

My wife watched an interesting programme on Saturday 26/ July on gogglebox approx 11pm It showed how to transmit sound by laser into adjacent properties 5m in distance using cheap materials, including laser pen, with greater distances possible with more expensive equipment. I believe neighbours are sending sounds to our house,5 m distance, is it possible to deflect the sounds or reflect it back. I am not tech orientated so can’t build using component parts Thanks

But as i know, you can't switch polarity on the laser and make it still work. As sound from 3.5m also doing - voltage, how does it modulate the laser

The polarity of laser is not switched, battery provides constant power source and transformer modulates on top of that therefore signal never goes below battery voltage.
