How to translate and publish a book yourself in another language | Self-Publishing A Book

Let’s do some maths. To translate a book in another language, you should need a professional translator, right? Let’s say your book is around 50,000 words. On average, the translation cost per word is around 0.12 cents. You multiply that by your 50,000 words and you get exactly 6,000 euros for a book translation. Needless to say this is a huge amount of money. Not everyone is able to pay it upfront when self-publishing your book. It's only possible if you’re going through the traditional publishing path. Which would mean you’d have nothing to pay for any translation as the publishing house pays for everything.
However, if you are fluent in more than one language, you could possibly translate your book into multiple languages without a publishing house or spending money on translations. How? Let me show you how I translated The Londoners in French.

DeepL is good but it's mostly a hit or miss for most languages. I used it for Chinese and realized that some translations are very accurate while others are beyond worse and that was me using premium. Instead of DeepL I'd rather you use Immersive Translate and select Gemini, Open AI or Claude or you can use all version compare and edit where needed. It saves so much time haa no word limit and it will be done in minutes. But anyways thanks for the tip

I've been thinking about the potential of selling foreign rights to my novels but keeping the English myself via self-publishing (a true hybrid style). It would take a bit of research to see if different markets would be interested enough, as well as a good track record of sales to find interest. Thanks for your insight. It's not something a lot of people think about.

Indeed it’s not something a lot of people think about. In my case, my cousin wanted a French version so badly that he asked and asked and asked again. In the end I just said yes because why not. It’s already almost earning out the cost I’ve put into it in terms of money. There’s a long way to go to earn out the cost in time though 😅🙈

You don't NEED to. But each market has their specificies in terms of cover liking. You won't see the same cover for the US and the UK in the traditional book market for example. But for us indies, I think the best way is to simply translate the title on the cover.

Deepl is great to get a first draft of a translated book, but you have to edit it anyway 😉 I don’t recommend you using that first translated draft because it doesn’t have the granularity of a native speaker.

About your question, that's typically the type of things I help authors with in my mentoring program. I'd recommend you to book a call with me so we can discuss it more in depth. Your title needs to be the same on the cover and on the Amazon title. For example, I've translated only the subtitle into French, not the main title. But it depends on the audience of the targeted language. Sometimes you'll need to fully translate the title.

As I mentioned, the genre doesn't matter, the audience does. Are Germans willing to buy books with English titles if they're translated into their language? I do not have the answer, I've only released in English and French so far.
