With the ideal connection the nipple is longer than the male threaded x socket connector so the moves the stress point farther away from the metal transition. Good tip on the hose clamp on the pvc side of the pvc to metal connection.

Best way to connect a brass spigot for my garden hose to 3/4" schedule 40 PVC? I do have a new quarter turn spigot with the female end, but currently my 3/4" male threaded adapter seems pretty thin. A thicker one would make the inner diameter pretty small.

These recommendations are extremely important and often ignored even by plumbers who should know better. Having just completed a water system for a well and filtration, we have had four leaks at transitions from PVC to metal. THe reason is because this sound advice was not followed. All such transitions will now be redone.

Great way to meet code, buy using a male thread! Under the uniform plumbing code, you can't joint plastic to metal because of the difference of materials will expand and contract at different rates, causing a leak in the long run. They do sell proper PVC to copper threaded adopters or even shark bites with a PVC to tube fitting. UPC 605.12.3 Threaded joints "...female PVC threaded fittings shall be used with plastic threads only." doing this will also cause the pressure rating to be reduced to 50% per UPC 605.12.3

The worst connections I’ve ever had to deal with are metal compression fittings onto plastic pipe. Every time I find them, I end up having to cut the sleeve and the piping where the sleeve was, then glue an NPT threaded plastic adapter. Lately if replacing an interior fitting I’ll use shark-bite fittings. They never leak and if the piping is cleaned properly, they’re a quick install that’ll last for a couple of decades. It’s good to see that plumbing has caught up with industrial pipefitting.

Your recommendation at 1:39 regarding the adapter made from a coupling and cut nipple is a great idea, but it doesn't seem to work for the Schedule 80 nipples I can find. The nipples all have casting protrusions and the exterior of the nipple is not true... they have a casting seam. I wouldn't trust these to seal properly to a coupling. Edit: Happened to be in Lowes today, and found the 1 1/4" nipples seem to be cut from pipe while the 1" nipples are cast and have the seams and protrusions I mentioned above.

Hopefully you've learned by now you almost always use high quality and proper pipe dope (lubricant). The guy doing the video seemed to have some good suggestions but is obviously not a plumber, the only time you usually need teflon tape is for old, used, or malformed threads.. it's literally like a bandaid.

My own preference would be to avoid, if at all possible, any metal to plastic transition which cannot be inspected. Personally, I avoid them everywhere I possibly can. Primarily, this is because metal and plastic have much different thermal properties and repeated changes in ambient temperature, over time, can weaken the joint and eventually cause it to fail.

I just use a length of Braided Vinyl, large enough to fit over both the PVC and the metal pipe, then I use 6 all-stainless steel hose clamps to clamp down on the pipes: 3 clamps on one pipe, and 3 clamps on the other pipe. Braided vinyl can withstand 250 psi, which is way more than the 60 - 70 psi found in a typical house.

Two thoughts: 1. are you wrapping enough tape around the threads? 2. are you wrapping the tape in the correct direction? One way and the end of the tape lays flat against the threads as you tighten the fitting, the other way and it essentially unwraps while you tighten, creating an imperfect seal.
