How To Transit the Welland Canal

The first Welland Canal, linking Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, opened in 1833 running from Port Dalhousie (on Lake Ontario) to Port Colborne (on Lake Erie). The fourth, and current, iteration of this vital shipping channel opened in 1932 with the Welland Bypass opening in 1973 making the final stretch easier for the large ships that dominate this waterway.

TIP….We just call it “PORT”. Grew up on the original canal in Welland. The original canal before the bypass was much more scenic. Great video.

I don't think that's how water works lol. Also I think each lock fills and drains 90 million liters per time but it's just refilled by gravity from the higher parts of the canal and it's all a cycle that's fed by lake erie
