How to transfer videos from iPhone to external SSD, PC or Mac | Inc ProRes | 4 methods compared
Ғылым және технология
In this video I’ll show how to get large video clips even in ProRes format, or any file off your iPhone 13 or 14 Pro, as quickly and conveniently as possible. All the methods I’ll discuss in this video will work with any iPhone or iPad.
I’ll show how you can connect a fast external USB SSD and if you’re offloading video files, you can then edit them directly off this drive. Then we’ll send the files wirelessly using WiFi, which is actually the fastest method I’ve found so far, apart from AirDrop which only works with Apple devices. I’ll compare speeds with these two methods against using a Lightning cable and also AirDrop.
As I alluded to, I'm more interested in getting large video clips off my phone to use in my video editing software, but both methods are also useful for freeing up space on your phone.
[Update 14th September 2022. The latest iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro still use a Lightning port with USB 2 speeds. So everything in this video still applies. Hopefully next year's iPhone will switch to USB-C and faster transfer speeds!]

At 3:01 when using file transfer in iTunes, I found it best to press "save" button then selecting your folder (which you can find by scrolling down inside of iTunes) instead of dragging and dropping, which often leads to crashing when transferring huge batches of files (30+gb). I love how high quality and informative your videos are. Thank you and hope to see more!

Hi, I used your method at 3:21 but whether I format to exfat or ntfs it doesn’t let me copy files. On ntfs the hard drive it’s shown but can’t copy while on exfat it’s still shown but it’s in bold grey which doesn’t even allow you to press on it to see if it works or not. Any help please ? NTFS won't work but exFAT or FAT32 should work fine. There may be another issue very hard to say without seeing your setup. Perhaps try a thumb drive formatted FAT32 and see if that works. Then format it exFAT and see if that works. Then perhaps try another drive. Good luck.

No problem I've glad the video helped! I quite like the Sandisk Extreme drives. There should be a link in the description - 1TB costs a little over £100 at the moment. It should already come formatted as exFAT. You don't need to get the fastest version - you won't get anyway near those speeds backing up your iPhone. But a faster drive will be useful if you want to edit off the drive.

Hi, I'm having a bit of trouble and I'm hoping you could be of some assistance. I am trying to move pictures from my iPhone 14 Pro Max to my Extreme SSD 1TB. I purchased the RSHTech USB hub and the Apple adapter and have it set up as shown in your video. It let me upload around 900 images. I disconnected and plugged the SSD into my computer to make sure everything transferred correctly, and it did. I plugged it back into my phone to continue uploading and received an error message when I tapped to save to files like before. The error message reads "Operation couldn't be completed. Bad file descriptor." I contacted the Sandisk manufacturer and they said they have not tested with an iPhone, to try using it either on a smartphone with usb-c connection or on my computer. It works on my computer; I can view and move files around. Now when I plug it back into my iPhone, it's not showing up in the files app, and still will not let me save photos to the SSD. After emailing back and forth with Sandisk, they will not let me exchange the product. Any advice is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!

Try force quitting all open apps and restarting phone. If that doesn't work, try a thumb drive or something other than your Sandisk SSD. Good luck.
I was able to get this working! The HDD is a good experiment but I think it won’t be too long until I just spend the extra money for an SSD. For my job, I’m offloading photos and videos from events, so it could be around 100 photos and videos per event. When moving items back to the iPhone from the HDD, I have to move a small group over at a time to ensure they all get transferred. A little annoying but at least I’ve cleared 10GB off my phone so far!

How can I transfer a 8GB video (4k resolution) from my iPhone 13 to my 2018 MacBook Pro. I’ve tried airdrop and it’s not working. I have tried using a cable and it’s not working. Please please help

It should work over AirDrop - is the phone close to the laptop? If it's not working with a cable either - I wonder if the file is corrupt - does it play back ok?
my standard operating system import on my windows 11 is having trouble opening the photos it says the amount of files but stays on keep searching files and never opens. Would you know what might be causing this? Thankyou for your time. I have iphone 12 pro max

You might need to download HEVC codec for Windows.

Should do!
Hi Gidon, I have an iPhone 14 Pro and a Macbook Pro. Currently I need to transfer video files around 400 GB to an external storage. What all things should I buy next and what external ssd would you recommend? Thanks.

That's a lot of data - it'll be slow but the most reliable method would probably be just using you USB to Lightning cable. I like a free tool called 3uTools.

Instead of powerbank can i just plug it directly with charger?

Tried using the usb powered hub on my 1tb sandisk extreme pro/iphone mini 11. It didnt work…

I found it can be fussy even on the exact USB hub you use. It only works with 2 of the 3 powered hubs I have. Also make sure the drive is formatted FAT32 or exFAT.
I was wondering if someone could help. I’ve connected my iPhone 14 Pro Max to the Extreme SSD using the USBC Camera Adapter. I’ve also got the charging port connected to a power bank in my house. I am getting an error saying “Cannot use accessory: Extreme 55AE: This accessory requires too much power.” I’ve tried changing to an adapter I got with my MacBook for more power and that doesn’t seem to be strong enough either. Does anyone know what I can do? Do I need a USB hub?

Sounds a like a power issue - can you try another USB hub?
I bought an adapter for my iPhone 14 Pro to transfer my files to my Samsung SSD. This works perfectly. But to my surprise I lost all my EXIF (meta) data once the files are on the SSD, even if I include ''All Photos Data'' in the Options tab before I tranfer it. The files that I transfer via Airdrop to my iMac do keep all EXIF data. Does anyone have a solution for this, or is it not possible at all?

I've not noticed that - are you using the Files app?
I use de same usb hub and the sandisk. For some reason the files I store in the sandisk, just disappear after a couple of days. Any one is experimenting this kind of issue?
@TheTechnologyMan

That's usually an issue with an underpowered hub - can you try a different one. And the hub does need to be powered.
Are you loosing anything by using Airdrop? Files compressed?

It depends on what you're sending and what devices you're sharing the files between. Check out the last paragraph here: support.apple.com/en-gb/HT212832

@@TheTechnologyMan it's just a question...
Scared to ask this but I wonder if third part USB adapters are reliable? Apple’s is $37 USD on Amazon right now, while third party adapters (with good reviews) are only $13. I just know how unreliable non-Apple cables and adapters are though.

I've not had great success with 3rd party Apple adapters - but if you buy from Amazon you should be ok to return it if it doesn't work properly.
I’ve tried the hard drive method and bought everything from Amazon and it doesn’t show up. I formatted my hard drive and it still doesn’t show in my files folder. Can you help me please?

Have you formatted the drive as FAT32 or NTFS? If that doesn't work then you're need to try another hub - and make sure it's a powered hub.

I am super relieved ! Thanks for the really informative and instructive video ! I had recently purchased a new WD 2TB Extreme pro ssd drive for my old Galaxy S21+, but recently decided to "upgrade" my phone to the IPhone 13 AFTER finding out that my new super fast portable HD would not work with my Samsung phone (albeit, I would have to use my laptop itself overloaded sigh) So being in an AT&T store last month I made the leap (with the knowledge that searching out cases and cords would be a much easier task with an Apple phone.... I was bitterly disappointed in the Apple Iphone. This is my first foray into Apple IPhone I ve owned two Ipads in the past and made the "assumption" the Iphone was the same. After all the raving over the Iphone by family and friends I relented..... very disappointing..... The IPhone is much slower than my old Galaxy, the screen feels almost mushy compared with the Samsung...it feels like the screen is sitting below the glass (of course it is) but the Samsung feels like the "glass covering" and "screen" are somehow one in the same... (if that makes any sense at all) The camera is also disappointing and now I find out the transfer rate (which I had already been noticing) is also slower. Ive also had numerous problems with my Apple ID.... IE being told it was incorrect , and now being told my Apple ID is for my IPhone and NOT my IPad. Sigh fellas, I have a password book !!!!...and it's there in black and white....Apple WHAT happened ??? I am going to purchase the components you suggest and I will keep you informed of my progress ! Really appreciate the help !!!!

Same way you connect any USB storage device.
1) You are the F-ing man! Absolutely brilliant. You have navigated a tedious dumpster fire of obstacles and challenges. Thank you sir. 2) Do you have any experience or user confidence in third-party apps that replicate the AirDrop feature when transferring large video files between iPhone/iOS and Windows PCs? Most seem to utilize Bluetooth which varies tremendously in data rate depending on the version. If you can provide any guidance based on personal experience it would be most appreciated. The mounted server/wireless workaround sounds like a blessing from god, I will try that now. With Care and Aloha - Elias

Nothing I do works, nothing! I have tried every way, I have an Iphone 13 pro max and my computer is a pc windows 11. I have so many videos and photos that I am out of storage on my phone, they will not transfer from the phone to the pc even though it’s paired with my phone, even if it did there wouldn’t be enough room on my computer for all the files, I bought the Toshiba Canvio advance 4t I also bought a USB port and the camera adapter for the phone, I only want to put the videos and photos on the external hard drive, all connects well but when I go to move my files my phone says I have to save to files, the external hard drive is there but I can’t choose it, only stupid iMovie so what do I do?

Try reducing the playback speed to 0.75x - KZread does a good job on this. And you can enable captions - I have full transcripts for every video. Hope that helps.
