How-To Transfer Artwork: Vinyl Mask (Episode 3)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In How-To Transfer Artwork: Vinyl Mask (Episode 3), I give a brief overview of the process I use to digitally adjust and transform a reference image into a vector file that can be cut on a vinyl plotter. The mask can then be used to transfer the image to the canvas. The computer cut mask saves the artist a lot of time and hassle when it comes to masking intricate designs, logos and lettering!

"The scales have fallen from my eyes" as they say! Now I get how people are able to create such precise and accurate shapes - its computer controlled. Thanks, Trevor.

Yes, things are much easier with technology; however, there was a time when we were doing everything we now do with a vinyl cutter by hand. The same results can be achieved doing it the old fashion way with a little practice and a lot of patience, but it does take a lot more time.

Hi Trevor You may already have tried this. I was playing with my plotter the other day and i had a big piece of backing left over. I applied the transfer tape straight on to the backing and then ran it through the plotter. A slight adjustment to the blade and it cut great. If you want multiples of things like stars for a flag for example you can set it to cut 50 stars, which you can weed positive or negative. If you think we used lay on the tape and hand cut it and weed it. Great for experimental stencil cut outs. Saves a fortune on vinyl. Hope it helps. Guy PS. Just had a right result, I just tried paper and transparent plastic type of app tape over the app tape i put on the waste vinyl backing. Both worked but i thought the clear tape was better as you can see the paper tape underneath easier. If anyone tries it let me know how you get on, or if you have had better results with this let me know. We don't all have the budget to keep buying vinyl so I thought this might save everyone some money. Guy

Yeah, I remember drawing designs, lettering, logos, etc. onto transfer tape and hand cutting it all out. The results were just as good in the end, but the time saved with a plotter is irreplaceable! I actually haven't tried cutting the transfer tape on my machine and honestly never thought of doing so. I'll have to remember that and try it sometime. Thanks for the tip my friend!

I've read good things about the Cricut plotter too, but I don't personally know anyone that uses one. For that reason I was hesitant to recommend it.

ive got a cameo 3 i love it for doing guitars graphics i use the 12x24 mat that way i can do wider graphics. at about 24 wide by 24 long i also use aftermarket blades not the ones that come with the machine.

Good to know. I don't know anyone personally that has used, or currently uses any of the Cameo machines. Thanks for sharing! I use aftermarket blades for my Graphtec cutter too. The aftermarket blades are less expensive and seem to last just as long based on my own experience.

@@robertscott3399 Oh man... I completely jacked that reply up. I was thinking you were using the Cricut when I read your comment at first (Cameo, Cricut... they both start with a c, lol). I do know a few people that use the Cameo and I've heard nothing but good things about it. I don't know anyone that uses the Cricut. Sorry for the confusion my friend.

Hi Trevor, I don't have a plotter, but I did buy the vinyl masking, unfortunately, I used it the wrong way. I had airbrushed a dolphin and then covered it with the vinyl and when I pulled it off, the paint came off with it, now I know where I went wrong, everyone makes mistakes, but this one was a bit silly.

  • @wickedartstudio

That's a great attitude to have Doug! I could go on and on about all the mistakes I've made over the years (and those I will make in the future). At the end of the day you're absolutely right, we all make mistakes. The upside is, those mistakes are learning experiences too! If you don't have a plotter and you don't plan to purchase one, I'd recommend buying the transfer paper instead of the vinyl for your masking needs. Transfer paper is thinner (easier to cut) and you can see through it to a degree which makes lining things up easier when you need to.

I'm finding the time spent learning how to use, adjust, and cut take more time than just hand cutting it. Very frustrating. Double cut lines make me crazy.

Is that a stretched canvas or is it a canvas/cardboard panel? I'm trying find the right vinyl masking material to use on stretched canvases with a very smoothly-sanded gessoed surface.

  • @wickedartstudio

    @wickedartstudio

It was stretched canvas. Just so you're aware, paint tends to bleed under a little more when using vinyl over canvas even with a very smooth gesso finish.

Ouch! That's quite a jump! It may come back down over time though (they may have released a newer and/or updated model). Even at that price, it's still a lot cheaper than a professional cutter and they really do make so many things faster and easier!

Dude, if the background is going to be soft focus wouldn’t it have been better to just stencil the flag? Just a thought.

Yes. Ordinarily, that's exactly how I would've approached this painting and for a very talented guy like you it makes perfect sense. My thinking behind the video was more oriented toward beginners and/or those without the confidence to go in and sketch, or just freehand airbrush the remainder of the painting. This is a good option for those individuals. At least that was my line of thinking...

Agreed. I would normally approach this painting differently as well. The idea behind the video was to give another option to those that may not have the same level of experience.
