Ah... good times
Drago's weapon is actually a tool that was used in real life to 'tame' elephants. The idea was to hit them with the pointy bits as they were growing up whenever they got out of line. This was repeated so that by the time they were adults, they were scared into submission of the tool, and the wielder by extension, even if they were physically capable of defending themselves. Drago likely found the Bewilderbeast as a hatchling, either by coincidence or killing or stealing it from its mother. As it grew, he used the hook to discipline it, ingraining fear and submission into it, until it was fully subservient to him regardless of the size difference.

@@theamazingspooderman2697 Backed up by his now iron-plated dragon army, Drago then discovered a young Bewilderbeast, which he abusively trained for a single purpose: to one day dethrone the established Alpha and become the new master of all dragons, answering only to Drago himself. It’s from the books but it’s fair to assume this is what happened since it’s not stated otherwise. Edit correction: it’s not from the main author of the series, it’s a dreamworks book so that is what happened in movie universe cannon.
I get how Hiccup may seem stupid for his initial plan in giving themselves up, but if you've watched the shows, you know his confidence comes from experience. actually the Red death is considered an Alpha, but just has less control over dragons, as the status was made due to how large and how basically imortal her species were, instead of earned from combat. It makes sense to Hiccup's character, to the tragic plot of finding a parent and have one last bittersweet reunion only to lose the other, giving an opening to the fallout of the story---the bigger incentive to defeating the villain---and then the rise to victory and Hiccup's crowning. As this is a coming-of-age story for Hiccup, losing Stoick was crucial to the story.

@j marine I know that Hiccup had a lesson to learn and that he should have listened about Drago, but I'm not talking about the domino effect of all the events leading to all that (It's a movie, it's pretty obvious what story they're trying to tell). I also know Hiccup contributed to the outcome. But I'm talking about who's directly responsible for killing Stoik. Hiccup might have put them in danger, but Drago killed Stoik. I find it ludicrous to blame someone other than the murderer. Plus, it was a battlefield, and Stoik literally jumped in front of toothless to save Hiccup.
Valka's full name is Valhallarama, but they shortened it to Valka for pretty understandable reasons. I imagine it would've been pretty hard to say constantly with voice acting.

The hooked spear weapon that Drago has is inspired by a real life tool that is used to "train" young elephants. They are abused with that tool so that when they are older and bigger and could easily kill their Trainer they don't because they're afraid of getting hurt. Considering that the bewilderbeasts (the big alpha dragons) have tusks like elephants, I think the implications are quite clear. Dragos has probably been abused by him since it was a baby

It's implied that Drago controls the Alpha dragon because he raised it, when it actually was small, to fear him instinctually. Kind of how Elephants are trained from a young age on how to do certain tricks because they can't be tamed once they're bigger than their owners.
Fun fact: Toothless's animation was based on a cat owned by one of the animators, there are actually a lot of similarities in physical build and movement between Toothless and a cat imo, but from personality I guess he's more of a dog haha
So far we only know of four Bewilderbeasts, a mother bewilderbeast from the Netflix show race to the edge, the egg from that mother grows up to become the one Valka has, Drago’s bewilderbeast that he just found by pure luck, and the skeleton of what seems to be a titan class version of the bewilderbeast that makes up most of the island that dragons use as their final resting place
The HTTYD website stated that Drago found his Bewildwerbeast as an egg. And once it hatched; well..... Originally Valka was gonna be the villain for the sequel. After Hiccup tells her that he was the one who wounded Toothless it would of sent her over the edge and she would of attacked Berk. But, obviously, they changed that. Along with Valka being the planned villain for this movie; Drago was planned to be the villain for the third movie. Also, it makes sense for Hiccup to want to try to change Drago's mind on dragons. Given both the first movie and both tv series; literally 9/10 of all villains/enemies he had both chagned their views on dragons and became allies. There were three that he failed to change, but that's bc they fucking died (no joke). There is one other but I feel that's bc the writers simply forgot about him. And he really wasn't a "villain"; more like the "old man that complains about and tries to sabotage the fun of the young kids" trope. But yeah, with a record like that you can't really blame Hiccup for wanting to try! Edit: Oh and that yelling thing Drago does; his VA would do yells to warm up his voice before recording. The writers liked it so much that they made into the character. BUT! Funnily enough, yelling was the way the Vikings got dragons to obey them in the books. And yes, Drago is dead.

Where No one Goes (the song that plays during the credits and right after the opening scene) is my FAVORITE SONG. it's the epitome of flying on a dragon, feeling free, just pure adrenaline flowing through you along with LOADS of serotonin. 50:31 the Drago's Bewilderbeast situation of how he tamed it was maybe like what happened to the Catastrophic Quakens in Dragons: Race to the Edge, where they have been in captivity for so long, they're used to it. So when Fishlegs tried to convince them to be free, they went back to their captors. Probably Drago got the dragon when it was still an egg.

So I guess they just grow extremely fast
Alpha is a title. As long as a dragon is strong enough they can become an Alpha. The bewilderbeast is an Alpha species in other words every member of this species is an Alpha automatically due to their immense size, unique breath and ability to command other dragon. The one from the last movie was also an Alpha. It was a queen that ruled over that nest.
If you watch the TV series... you'll know that both of those alpha dragons are only 3 years old. Drago looked for an alpha egg to be able to control it as it grew, and control other dragons through it by extension using fear and pain as a motivator to do what he wanted it to, regardless of the size it grew to. The alpha from the nest was the first egg found, and then protected from Drago by Valka and the dragon riders(Hiccup and Co.).
9:13 I think she's disgusted and wiping her lips because remember, Toothless just aggressively licked Hiccup's face earlier. Lol
50:45 we learnt from other info. He raised it from birth. Beating the infant into submission and forcing his will onto it. Basically, the waving of the hook and shooting reminds it of the abuse drago put it through
the world building in the how to train your dragon series is so good
Ok so the dragons are based off of a number of animals. Toothless’s movements are heavily inspired by one of the (I think animator’s) cat with some dog thrown in. Stormfly is most like a parrot, Cloudjumper is based on an owl, and Skullcrusher is a mix between a beetle and a battle axe (source, httyd 2 art book, but I don’t have it in front of me because I’m in college and that’s at home but I read that book religiously)
While Drago does want to become unstoppable and take over the world, it’s important to understand that that’s not his entire motivation. His desire to dominate dragons is motivated by revenge for dragons slaughtering his family, burning his village and tearing off his arm when he was a boy. He wants to make all dragons live in fear of him, just as he once lived in fear of them. So while Drago certainly took it too far, his motivation for wanting to overcome and dominate dragons is at least an *_understandable_* one.
Everything from the hiccup's wings, to the map, Stoick getting Skull crusher and to hiccup and Astrid dating would make absolutely sense after watching the HTTYD race to the edge. I only found out the race to the edge after watching all 3 movies
My favorite detail is right at the end, when hiccup dunks the black sheep in the basket, it's not the basket marked with a night fury. It's the one with a deadly nadder. He dunked it in Astrid's basket.
In the TV shows it is somewhat implied that drago searched for an alpha species' egg so that he could raise it from a young age. Although that would make timing very confusing. And plus that stick he swings around is used for taming big animals in real life so it's not too confusing how he tamed an alpha.
You guys definitely need to watch Riders/Defenders of Berk and Race To The Edge. I'd even argue they're better than the sequels because as a series, it has the advantage of doing more characterization, especially for the side characters, and worldbuilding the movies ever could.

I am so glad you are watching this, hopefully you are enjoying these movies just as we, the fans, do.
How to Train Your Dragon had a television show as well which explains events that happened between the 1st and the 2nd film. So you can get even more character development to explain why the characters did what they did. So the events in this film, mostly the logic and reasoning of each character, will be explained 💙
Y'all wanna know what happened to Drago? There was an unmade sequel to two canon books that take place immediately after this movie. Although it was shelved, they had a plot figured out, which consisted of Hiccup and Toothless being lost in a storm, being rescued by a massive water dragon which brings them to an underwater Viking ruin that's located in a massive air bubble. There, they find that Drago was also rescued by that dragon. He has since found a centipede-like dragon that is described to be a bit like Venom from Spiderman in that it latches onto him like a parasite and has a sumbiotic relationship with him. So this centipede dragon has attached itself to the stump of his shoulder and now acts as a flamethrower arm. When Drago and Hiccup meet, Drago declares that they are going to finish this right here, right now, and only one of them will make it out of the ruin alive. All of Hiccup's weaponry was lost at sea in the storm, and Toothless can't use a plasma blast for risk of hitting the cavern wall and flooding it with the ocean. The centipede dragon also draws off Drago's hatred which is so strong that it allows the dragon to resist Toothless' commands as the alpha. So what ensues is a game of cat and mouse through these ruins where Hiccup struggles to find a way to defeat Drago without his weapons, grapples with his mostly pacifistic ideals in this situation where he must either kill Drago or be killed himself. He does end up grinding Toothless' scales into a fire proof paste that he applies to his body. Eventually (in the interview where the writer talks about the plot of the book, he doesn't go into detail of how it happens) Hiccup does manage to kill Drago, and it would've been shown to be a very grim and clearly final end for Drago, something that would've cost Hiccup a piece of his soul to do. And since the two books that this is a sort of sequel to are canon, then even though the book was never completed, the entire plot had been figured out and is therefore pretty much canon as well
The relationship between Hiccup and Stoick is my favorite part of the movie. They thought they were so different as father and son, and Hiccup clearly thinks he's going to follow Valka's path to take on a dragon quest than Stoick's chief role in Berk. But in the end, they are the same, and Hiccup just becomes something that brings the best of Stoick and Valka together. Also the look on Hiccup when he saw his parents dancing and singing gets me every time. He was confused and curious because he has never had a complete family before.
You guys should watch the animated series as it ties into the movies

All of these dragons, the flaming sword, why Stoick is back to being on edge with Hiccup's plans, come from all the different series
Please, you guys! You have to watch the shows, especially Race to the Edge! I'm sure you'll love them. The first ones are Riders of Berk and Defenders of Berk and they happen after the first movie when Hiccup and the others are 15. Race to the Edge is like one or two years before the second movie, they're like 19 or something. And while there are a few inconsistencies, they're canon. And I would dare say they are as good as the movies
The big dragon from the first movie was a queen. Astrid even said so after they first encountered it. "It's like a giant beehive, they're the workers and that's their queen". And then Hiccup's mother mentioned that "Every nest has its queen" when introducing the Bewilderbeast.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen any other movie that takes you on such an emotional roller coaster ride. The ups & downs had me in tears of joy, fear & sadness then pride & happiness when I first saw it & multiple views since I still end up with a tear at minimum. These are truly the best movies
Stoick’s death always hits me just as hard as the first time
This is so So SO MUCH more intense than what we got at the time because you didn't get spoiled by trailers the way we did. They revealed Valka as his mom before we even got to the theatre.
Drago had the alpha since it was an egg and continuously beat it and tormented it for so long that it knows nothing else except dragos control
I'm not sure if this is still my favorite movie of all time, but it's definitely still up there. The ending monologue is so emotional. It makes me want to actually do stuff, which is not easy to accomplish.
I honestly would like to see the series and short films of this franchise even more now

The reason why they age is bcause between each movie there is a cartoon series where they do things so you see how Hiccup obtains his sword and the process of the dragon scale armor I do believe.
I love when Stoic calls Astrid his future daughter in law cause a) supporting your sons relationship b) you don't find out in the movies but I'm pretty sure by this point in the story they're actually betrothed. It happens in one of the series.
Just to inform there are 3 shows that are in between movies 1 and 2 ,in time line order there is "Riders of Berk", "Defenders of Berk" and "Race to the Edge" they are obviously not needed to know the main story but they are great they explore and develop the characters(most of Hiccup and Astrids relationship) and the world mainly dragons, they are some of my favorite shows and highly recommend if interested in the HTTYD World.

and one of the MANY bonuses of Race is that we (BIG spoilers in case you plan on watching it, btw) get to see hiccup develop the fire sword over the course of multiple seasons. one of the plenty of genius ideas the people making that show had that ended up just making it better : )
Hiccup’s firesword, Inferno, is a direct reference to lightsabers from Star Wars Also, in the TV series, he constructs a specialized shield that is arguably a reference to Captain America’s shield
When toothless broke out of the ice and started glowing blue he was beyond pissed that he tried to kill hiccup, you can see it on his face
fun fact: Drago's screams and yells were vocal warmups the voice actor did to play the part, and it was decided to use them in the movie.
The first big dragon from the movie is one of the QUEEN that Valka talked about where every nest has one, and the Bewilderbeast is a KING
Some people believe that Bewilderbeast can reproduce asexual. But when Volka said this is the king of all dragons she means they are alpha dragons that protects the all. For example people call Toothless's Godzila looking mode a Titan Wing mode just because of a game but it isn't, people call it an Alpha Mode. When Volka says they're rare she means the Bewilderbeast not the Alpha Species.
One thing I noticed about this series is the fact that Hiccup loses something important to him in every movie and each time it’s sadder In the first he loses his leg In the second he loses his father In the third… well you’ll have too see But when I saw it in the theaters, no one walked out with dry eyes

I think the dragons are based on dogs and cats, cuz toothless is based of a cats, and fish legs's dragon based of a dog
Hman blaming stoics death on hiccup as if the alpha mind controlling wouldn't mind control toothless regardless of the situation lmao
ngl that opening scene with hiccup and toothless flying together might be the best one in the whole series.
The big dragon from the first movie was an alpha. But as they said in this movie every nest has their queen. The dragon in the first movie was a queen. It's also a titanwing which is a special breed of dragon who is usually bigger and stronger than the same species of the same dragon. So for an example if toothless was a titanwing he'd be bigger and stronger than other nightfuries. Probably more colorful as well. But yeah the dragon from the first movie was an alpha, just not a male

Not sure if this is what you meant but the Red Death and the Bewilderbeasts are not the same species. The Bewilderbeasts are very clearly seadragons due to their fins and the inability to breathe fire as well as the fact that Drago's was underwater until the fight. The Red Death has wings and can breathe fire, so it's not the same species. If that isn't what you meant then sorry but I wanted to clarify.

@@patrickmorrey8722 I never said they were I said they were both alpha dragons 😅
Please consider watching the TV series in order. They're very good. Lots of cool designs for dragons too. It fills in the gaps between the films.
As Hiccup said in the beginning of the very first movie. “We’re Vikings, we have stubbornness issues.” Their is an interesting symmetry between Hiccup and Stoick in both this movie and the first one, where both are hellbent on stopping war in their own way and won’t be dissuaded from their course, and it ultimately costs both severely at the others expense, Stoick not listening to Hiccup about the Red Death and using Toothless to lead the Vikings to Dragon Island is ultimately what cost Hiccup his leg and Hiccup here not listening to Stoick about Drago and trying to redeem him ultimately cost Stoick his life, saving his son from a mind controlled dragon. Their are a lot of characters in this series, both in the movies and the tv show who simply won’t be dissuaded from the destinies they’ve set for themselves until it’s either to late or something has forcibly snapped them out of it, Hiccup, Stoick, Drago and Grimmel are all perfect examples of this in their own, all four characters our simply to stubborn for their own good, with each one trying to forcibly change the world around them to fit their particular desires.
Has anyone said that in the end, when Hiccup caught the black sheep, he threw it into Astrid's basket? That is, he gave 10 points to her. I find this detail quite cute :"3
The Bewilderbeast is apart of the Tidal Class. Aquatic Dragons.
there is an entire series between the first film and the second film. The riders of berk / The defenders of berk / Race to the edge. All these tell what happens in between these movies. And the world building and the storyline in this series is awsome, the creators do a very good job to connect every thing together with the movies as well
Although one thing I found weird with Drago's fire resistant cape is that sure, it protects you from the fire, but it shouldn't protect you from the heat...
The giant dragon from the first one is called a Red Death, and it's the "queen" of dragons. The giant ones from this movie are called Bewilderbeasts, and they're the "kings" of dragons. There's actually a theory that since the Bewilderbeast provides food for the other dragons that the one Drago tamed was the king of the giant dragon from the first movie, and without it to provide food, the Red Death forced all the other dragons to constantly feed it.
Man, to see this movie without the tremendous spoilers from the trailers. Like, first thing they showed back then was Velka's unmasking scene, it was absolutely crazy.
Its been soo long since i watched this series man! Now that im rewatching it with you guys i can really see why it it considered such a masterpiece.
My favorite quote from Stoick: "Men who kill without reason cannot be reasoned with" It is my favorite for it is true about most killers we have today.
They actually are more like cats alot of toothless actions were based off one of either the director's or the animators cats
the big dragon from the first movie was a queen thats why hickup mom said "every nest got its queen" its a female males are alpha and a bewilderbeast(what the dragon king in this movie is) is just a very rare breeed and an alpha doesnt have to be a bweilderbeast
This movie and the first one will always be the most important movies from my entire childhood
This is genuinely one of the absolute most magical and magnificent movies ever. I shit you not, I've seen this movie around 10 times since it came out and that scene with hiccup and toothless flying still makes me cry at how much I genuinely love this movie with all of my heart
A little context for You guys, the dragón of the fiesta movie was a queen, hiccup's mom said that "every nest has their queen"
9:07 actually, you're all right. They used cat, dog, and bird behavior to inspire the dragons which is why sometimes Toothless is very cat-like (especially in the first half of the first movie) while other times he's very dog-like. And as you see when he meets other dragons, very bird-like with the head-movement/dances.
You guys should really react to the series Dragons: Riders of Berk, Dragons: Defenders of Berk and especially Dragons: Race to the Edge, if you want more HTTYD content.
The great anti-parallel between parts 1 and 2 is: in part 1 Hiccup was trying to convince Stoic but in part 2, Stoic was the one trying to convince Hiccup.
Answers to your questions/comments made in the video: - "Oh, they're a little bit older now!" Yep! As mentioned a couple of minutes later, this movie is set about 5 years after the first. Back then, they were 15 and 14 (the twins are slightly younger than the others), and now they are 20 and 19. - "This is confirmation that Hiccup and Astrid are pretty serious." They became betrothed to one another in the tv series Race to the Edge, I believe it was the beginning of Season 5. They'd finally gotten together at the end of the pervious season, and it's all very adorable #Hiccstrid - So there are different Classes of dragon in the series. Hiccup briefly mentioned some in the first movie while reading the Book of Dragons ("Strike Class, Fear Class . . ."). For example, Stormfly is a Tracker Class dragon (formerly Sharp Class, but that was retconned by movie 2), Toothless is Strike Class, and the Bewilderbeast is Water Class, which is why it swims under water. - 33:54 The other reason is . . . well . . . 🏳🌈 - Hiccup's "Come on . . ." after blowing up Drago is both a callback to his failed attempts to fly solo earlier (i.e. when he crashed), and also to the first movie, when he and Toothless lost control and hit the Red Death's tail. - It's not confirmed in the movies, but I'm sure I read somewhere that yes, Drago drowned when his Bewilderbeast dove into the water with him still standing on it.

The Big Dragon from the first movie actually was indeed an Alpha as well
Okay I feel like using my extensive knowledge of this series to good use to help clear things up a bit. 1. Alphas aren’t a singular species they’re a status. 2. The green death (big dragon in the first movie) is like the queen of the hive, every nest has one. 3. The ice dragons in this movie (bewilderbeasts) are aquatic dragons and in this movie dragos dragon and valkas dragon are competing for the alpha title 4. The alpha can’t control minds that’s only a bewilderbeast thing That’s all i got rn hope u enjoy the 3rd movie and the two tv series if u wanna react to that

They are around 20 now as he was about 14/15 in the first movie
I have really fond memories of this movie and it’s great revisiting those memories while I watch your reaction. So when this came out my best friend I were in middle school and when I say we were obsessed I mean i got up at like 6am to watch the tv show wich was dedication for my clinically depressed ass. We would sped our whole lunch period talking about the franchise and even though “we were too old for toys” we both bought the action figures. We also spent hours playing the online game that I alway forget about. When they announced this movie we were so excited! They had actually dropped the first ten minutes of the movie on the official DreamWorks KZread channel right before it came to theaters and I just remember sitting slack jawed trying to drink everything in and spending the next five hours ignoring everything to sit and theorize and go over every little detail. I grew out my hair and practiced for hours every night so I could do Astrid’s weird ass braid from the first movie since it wasn’t long enough to do the cool side braid she had in this one. Luckily his hair was much longer than mine so he did the one you see here for the premier. When it finally came out in theaters it was the first time in years we let ourselves be kids and I think it’s one of the only times we were truly happy during that period of our lives. I’m not gonna go too deep but we were both less than straight/cisgender and that wasn’t really seen as an ok thing where we lived. This franchise was one of the few things that gave us comfort and a sense of belonging in a world that actively hurt and ostracized us at every opportunity. Watching you guys have so much fun with this warms my heart.
I am glad they went this route. I heard somewhere the original script was Hiccups' mom was supposed to be the villain in this one and Drago was supposed to be in the third.
45:14 Welp, there's a reason why Kung Fu Panda and How To Train Your Dragon are some of DreamWorks animated gems 😅❤❤🤟
I really hope you guys watch the specials and series. They do so much for worldbulding and character development.
10:24 gotta watch those cannon TV shows. :P
I love that they turn the village elder into the -crazy- cat lady.
When you guys are finished with the movies, I would highly recommend you check out of the series as well. Dragons: The Series, and its continuation, Dragons: Race to the Edge. Both shows take place in between the first and second movie, and are not only a fun watch, but expand on the franchise's lore with new heroes, villains, and dragons, while still developing the already established characters. Huge recommendation.
Just to make things clear, an alpha is a dragon that is in charge of a nest or hive of dragons, the dragon from the 1st movie (called the Red Death) was indeed an alpha, she comtrolled her group of dragons. The Biwelderbeats were also alphas of their own groups, but once an alpha challenges another alpha nd wins they become in charge of both groups
