How to Train Puppy to Down Part 1 Introduction

In this video, we teach a 10-week old American Staffordshire Terrier how to down. We walk you through the steps of how you can teach your dog or puppy at home how to down. There are a few ways to do it but we find this is the fastest and most effective way to teach any dog to down. This is only his second day of training and he did not come with a down so we are only a few training sessions in at this point and you can see him learning along with all of you at home.
Make sure to watch our second video where we show you his progress after just a few more sessions.

    As a father of two girls (and two puppies) I loved the fact that you kept the video raw for us to see what it’s really like training with distractions.

    I enjoy that your daughter is involved in this video , and others as well as others in other videos-it’s real life and relatable. it also shows us how to train with distractions or rather under conditions we most likely have at home ourselves.

    They're always interrupting training lol. They try to help but usually just distract us which is a big help in it's own way lol.

    Would be great to see your 'handing over process', when you return the dogs to their original owner. How you keep them calm etc.

    Good idea. It's a two part situation. Each part about 1.5 hours. A lot of information to hand over. Like a mini handler's or trainer's course. But it's worthwhile to film at least parts of it. Thanks for watching and the good idea

    Garret has weekly and monthly live training for his members at DIYK9.com and maybe a year ago he was doing some free shaping training while his daughter was sitting there watching. Garret moved from free shaping to something else and he decided to ask his daughter what to do next because the dog didn't respond with the first method. It was just for fun, but whatever it was she suggested worked. He was a proud pappa. Then again, she's been living with a master dog trainer all her life, so she has picked this up easily.

    I think right here it was more about the puppy getting the motion down and following the hand. Notice sometimes he didn't say anything and just paid the dog.

    I have two dogs and when I started using Garret's methods, the puppy learned so fast, but the older dog, not so much. Then I started using the "Leashed" course at DIYK9.com and that helped our older dog so much.

    Whats the purpose of training the puppy on a raised bed/platform?

  • @rustyshackleford9154

    @rustyshackleford9154

    Жыл бұрын

    It's a place bed. You don't have to but it teaches them that the place bed is a great place to be and good things always happen on it. I think it also makes them not move around as much during the training. Notice when the puppy gets down it's kind of all over the place.

  • @AmericanStandardK9

    @AmericanStandardK9

    3 жыл бұрын

    Breed standard is to crop/cut the ears. Bandages used mostly to help keep them up and shape them so they don't flop down. A little bit also to help the healing

    I love the fact that you are on the ground with the puppy!!!! So many people try and do it standing up and get frustrated. Getting down to their level, even for sit and come when they are really little ( or a small breed) will help alot.
