How to Train a Ferret Not to Bite

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In this video, I discuss the 4 methods that I use when teaching a ferret not to bite. Then, I discuss when those methods may be appropriate depending on your situation as well as general advice on this topic. These methods are based on what has worked in my experience, but I welcome comments discussing other non abusive methods of training. All ferrets are different and may respond better to some techniques than others. Please just remember to be patient and keep a calm demeanor! You can do it!

I have had rescue ferrets for approx 8 years now and I definitely had them come in upset, fearful, and even depressed. Letting them settle and not being in their face was a good place to start - and a good set of old motorcycle gloves. Some people disagree with using gloves - however, I found that if you take your fear of being bitten out of the scenario, you are going to have a calmer ferret. They are not going to get a reaction from you if they do bite the gloves - and they feel your calm. After a few days or few weeks, depending on the ferret, I would then move forward removing the gloves. It was pretty much always successful and some of the most traumatised ferrets ended up being some of my most friendly and loving. Keep up the great work Courtney, heaps of great tips too. Simon is gorgeous. (Nicole).

I just adopted a baby ferret about 5 days ago her name is Tulip but she has a severe biting problem and I have tried everything to get her to stop biting. She chases me and my fiancé around and bites super hard and draws blood. She is a very happy and energetic ferret and I never force her to spend time with me I allow her to play as she wishes and never get in her face. I don't know what to do it hurts really bad. She bites my hands and feet and it's gotten so bad that I have to wear shoes in the house and keep my hands away from her. I desperately need help I cannot figure out what to do. She refuses to eat anything other than her regular food. She won't eat treats. I have bought 6 different types of treats now and spent over $100 trying to find ones she will eat...... Which makes training near impossible.....

My girl was never fully properly bite trained by her previous owner and has responded well to my attempts with reinforcement with toys over the last year of having her but she still goes hard sometimes on ankles and my inner elbows randomly, I usually make a sound to signal pain and then move her away from me and don’t engage in play for a single minute after then use toys to engage. This was really really helpful though as I really needed more methods! I plan to try and train both my girls with your available content. Thanks so much for providing it

My first two ferrets were fearful biters due to being handled poorly by the kids in their previous home. I focused on just spending in the room they were allowed to play in at the start. I sat in the corner and just read a book and let them come to me and explore me and my hands without picking them up at the start. When I had to handle them at the start I paired every pick up with a piece of chicken which distracted them from biting and over time made them more comfortable. They have both passed on now but they became the sweetest, gentlest little boys ❤

I want to add that if those things dont work and you have an adult ferret and they still bite. Please take tona vet to get checked out. I got a ferret labeled "a biter". She had been fixed and didnt respond to normal ferret stimulus and was extreme fear. It took a while but it turned out she had an underlining medical condition, and was deaf/blind. It takes time and patients and get help from shelter or vet.

That looks home-made. I've purchased baby barriers from Amazon, but they need a lot of modification. The holes in the ones I bought are too small for adult ferrets to crawl through, but just fine for climbing UP, over the barrier. So then I tape clear plastic (wall poster covers) to the front, so the ferrets can't climb. But then they claw at the tape. So I had to make cloth sleeves/covers for the barriers, so they can't get at the tape. It's quite the arts & crafts project, but it pays off! ^_^ Barrier: smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07JGDGG23/ Clear plastic: smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B086G546X3 I used flat sheets for the covers, stitched them to the correct width to make sleeves that can go over the barriers. For some reason, flat sheets are WAAAAY less expensive than buying fabric by the yard. If you're having a hard time visualizing what I'm talking about, check out my Instagram highlight "Arts & Crafts" (skip the first 3 clips) to see a couple videos of the old and new covers I made. instagram.com/kwsapphire/ Or, here's an example of Jasper climbing over the barrier WITH a cover but WITHOUT the plastic shields. I thought I could get away with just cloth. Nope! twitter.com/kwsapphire/status/1308822198875029504 As far as I can tell, NOBODY sells a ferret-ready barrier. You either have to modify an existing barrier, or build one from scratch. Makes me wanna start my own company, or call all the barrier manufacturers & be like "Yall are missin out on an important market!"

My onyx does the "lick lick lick lick CHOMP shakeshakeshake!!" thing on my wrist. Hard enough that she leaves impressions that later turn into little scabs. She's approaching four years old, so I don't think she'll grow out of it. It's okay though, when I've had enough, I put her down, and she runs off and does other things. Problem solved. ^_^ The problem WE have is with our other older girl, Opal. We rescued two young ferrets back in October, and Opal still hasn't accepted them. Every time she smells them, she starts stress-dooking (not play-dooking), and if she can get her teeth on them, she will try to tear them to shreds. It's very obviously NOT playing. Poor Amber pooped in fear when Opal got ahold of her. Opal also got her teeth on Rusty's scruff through the bars of the cage, and tried to pull him forcibly through the bars. We had this same problem when we got our 3rd ferret, Jasper. Opal took ages to warm up to him. I think we finally coated him in Ferretone to get Opal to accept him. We did a bit of that with Amber, but only put the ferretone on Amber's scruff, so Opal licked Amber's scruff, but then bit her further down. So we may need to coat Amber and Rusty in ferretone from nose to tail-tip, and then just give them a bath after Opal is done licking them. I'm just worried that she'll attack them again. It's so terrible. We have 2 cages, and I have been swapping Opal and the newbies between cages, so Opal keeps getting surrounded by their scent. I also let the babies play in the room, and then put them back in their cage, and let Opal out in the room, so she can smell where they've been. She can also walk up the ramp to their cage and smell them. And try to attack them through the bars, unfortunately. She's such a mean wezul.

every time mine bit i sprayed her with a water bottle she stoped but it did take a good 2 months so if your deciding to get a baby farret plz take in to consideration that you will be bit A LOT!!! iv had 3 the first one there was no youtube to help so that one took me for ever to train but the next ones were alot better not saying it was easy it doesn't happen over night and their sharp milk teeth don't help but if you are willing to put the time in they are amazing cuddly animals that are lots of fun and by no means hit them you may get the farret scared of you and then the bites become harder and the animal will not trust you to handle them..
