How to Top Dress and Level a Sloped Lawn using Compost

Top Dressing and Leveling a sloped lawn is a challenge that many homeowners face. In this video we take the mystery out of getting a great result when leveling a lawn with a slope. We show how to choose between soil and sand for your lawn top dressing and leveling project. You'll learn about the required tools and the pros and cons of each. Our preferred tool of choice is the leveling rake
Using a leveling rake on a slope is a great method for getting a smooth surface on your Bermuda grass lawn. There are a few subtle techniques with the leveling rake that will help you get a great result. The method is slightly different to how you would use a leveling rake on a flat surface. When leveling a slope, it's important to use the weight of the rake to do most of the work. The lawn leveling tips we share in this video will help you get a great result.
A lawn leveling rake is a very important tool for getting the best possible result when you top dressing or leveling your lawn. While there are other types of rakes, using a lawn leveling rake will save a lot of time during the lawn top dressing process. It allows you to quickly move the soil or sand mixture around while simultaneously working it into the turf.
It's a great lawn care tool that allows you to get the best result in your top dressing project in the least amount of time.
In this video we use the Soil3 compost from Super Sod. We like it because it's very rich organic material that improves soil quality. We also cover Super Sod's level mix which is 70% USGA sand and 30% compost.

    Great video! I had a couple quick questions if you have time to respond to. I live in the DFW area and have Bermuda. New sod was put down about 9 months ago. The builder left the lawn very uneven. I have some deep ruts in spots that I want to fill in. Would you recommend doing a layer of the compost first before leveling the remaining with sand? Also not the best soil in my yard to begin with. Also did you have to sift their compost to remove any debris? Thanks in advance!

  • @RonHenry

    @RonHenry

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi Jason. If you can mix them together that would be best. Next best option is a layer of compost followed by the sand you’re using for leveling. They’ll mix a bit as you use the leveling rake. I would find high quality compost with limited debris to minimize sifting required. The material I use doesn’t require it because it’s very clean. For compost, it’s tough to beat CarbonizPN. You can get it individual bags or a 2000 lb super sack. Super Sack: golfcourselawn.store/products/carbonizpn%E2%84%A2-2000-lb-super-sack Single Bag: golfcourselawn.store/products/carbonizpn%E2%84%A2-top-dressing-soil-enhancer The prices shown include delivery. So on the bottom right side of the front lawn why was the grass so sparse? I have patches like that where there’s a lot of rain rain off. Short of renting a Ditch Witch and running underground drainage I don’t have a solution.

  • @RonHenry

    @RonHenry

    You can't see it in the video Jim, but there's a shrub there that shades the grass in that area. It''ll grow in as temps get warmer and days longer but it always lags behind the rest. Bermuda hates shade. I'd highly recommend fixing the drainage problem before taking on a big slope leveling project. Anything you can do to keep the water that comes from the house off the slope will really help the sand stay in place.

    You’d want to ask for a 70/30 blend of sand and screened compost. The better options won’t have much debris like stones and twigs that you’ll eventually have to get rid of. Search google in your area for “top dressing” or “lawn leveling”. Often places that carry masonry sand can help you out.

    It doesn't make a huge difference JDTW. I prefer to level and then spread the seed after and use the leveling rake to work it in. This method avoids covering the seeds too much with the leveling mix.

    That shouldn't be the case Todd. If you go light when top dressing, it shouldn't damage your St. Augustine grass. I might try using a blend with compost in it vs. straight sand. A 70/30 mix of sand and soil works really well.
