How to tone a canvas for oil painting

ARA Boston Instructor Julie Beck shares how she typically tones a canvas. Here, she uses burnt umber which is fast drying. You can use any color, out of the tube or mixed, to tone your canvas. However, burnt umber is fast drying and a commonly used pigment to tone canvases.
Make sure after you tone your canvas, you give it adequate time to dry before painting on it!

What would be the best thing to use for sketching prior to toning instead of graphite pencils

👏. Can this be done if I already sketched on the canvas without removing the graphing markings…?? Please & thank you

I think the solvent might smear the pencil.

Thank you-- this is helpful! Is there a specific brand of paper towel you recommend for the non-linty quality?

Personally, I purchase canvases that are already primed. I don't like having to prime it myself.

i like to let it dry for at least a few days if it's an earth tone. If you want to be safe, maybe a week

We teach students not to use too much solvent or you can jeopardize the paint film. This method ensures minimal solvent use. However there are many ways to tone and each person has their own preference. Thank you for sharing yours!

Julie Beck thank you for your response. i usually use a lot of mineral spirits to tone my canvas i never really thought about jeopardizing the paint film. what is the worst that could happen? will it crack faster?

@@red2744 if you think about it, Oil Paint is just paint particles and oil (as a binder). We add OMS or any solvent in order to make paint more fluid and/or dry faster... but it does so by breaking down the oils and creates a "leaner" paint which will make it dry faster. Yes the paint is more fluid but once the OMS evaporates, you're left with the paint particles and less oil than you started with. If you use enough OMS/solvent and it breaks down too much oil... or like, ALL of the oil, you're left with the just the paint particles, which is basically just dust. Using OMS is fine for the most part but using an excess of it can be not so good. Using it sparingly is the recommendation I've been given by multiple sources. I use it to tone, and then maybe a tiny bit in my first layer of paint. After that I don't use OMS. This is mostly a concern if you're working indirectly and you care about "fat over lean." You always want a fast drying layer on the bottom (less oil) and the slower drying layer on top (more oil). You can also add oil to your paint to make it more fluid in later layers so you aren't constantly using solvent. (OMS or solvent dries by evaporation which is fast drying, oil dries by oxidation which is a slower chemical reaction). Also, FYI, the only things I ever add to my paint are maybe OMS or oil. I don't use complicated mixtures or other mediums. This is a personal preference because these are the things I understand and know how to control. Others may feel differently about their preferences.
