I think it was a very clever move by Olah to grow his belly so that he can hide his serves better... ;-)

Olah is Finnish #1 for a very long time and strongly in the ITTF's top 100. Meanwhile, Chen was always hiding his serve with his toss purposely backwards. How the umpire never warned him at all throughout the match was completely insane.

I think Chens serve is acceptable. Yes he does not throw his ball vertically but it does not look that he hides the ball much. From my point of view Olah should be able to see everything he has too. if you look at the underspin serve from he indeed can read that its underspin. he just underestimates the amount. so in my opinion Its just a pretty good serve with deceptive motions. Olah on the other hand intentionally hides the important contact point with his hand. but besides that his serve is pretty simple and if he would not hide it his opponent would probably have a lot less problems. edit: looks like chen hides the ball with his head like yoshimura

@@furypanda9629 Check how near the neck the ball goes, and his shoulder. He does hide if with the body, i do hide this way my hook serves sometimes.

Benedek also has difficulties when the rally starts and the ball goes to his crossover point since he is tall, his technique is good and his backhand is deadly. He needs to move more and focus on spin.

Most players cheat at serve by hiding the ball! Watch Samsonov. He was never hiding or whatever. That’s how should be served.

Surely, hiding the serve could have been the issue, but look also how many mistakes both players are making even during the warmup, and later, on supposedly easy hits. I think it might have been an issue with the balls or the table/floor. I think it is not usual for pro players to make THAT many mistakes during a game.

No offense, what you are saying is correct, but it doesn't help really. Contact point and movement of the paddle while serving is usually a strong indicator for the spin to expect. Especially in non-professional environment this will help. As closer the ball hits to the handle of the racket, as less spinit will create, it will be rather empty of spin. if the ball hits top of the racket the spin will be higher. then you look at the movement of the paddle, this will allow you to see if you get top, side or backspin or a combination. if you wait for the ball to bounce, your reaction time reduces immensely, also it is the easiest to attack a serve at its highest point in the bounce curve, not just for attacks in general thats the best point to hit it. if you wait for it to fall, it will be very hard to return, expecially for heavy top spin or kicker serves. I assume a pro will be able to see the label and the bounce, analyse it and be quick enough to react, but a "normal" player will not be able to react that quickly. Don't forget most players have so much problems returning serves, that it will be great for them to start returning at least some. So guys focus on the start of the serve and if someone is covering the racket, it is illegal and you can call it.

The rules about serve are so simple yet so often ignored. Both of them are not using an open palm, both are throwing the ball in a half circle arc towards themselves, and half the time the contact point is hidden. Its poor umpiring, sure, but the problem is the players not having enough sportsmanship to follow the rules on their own

Wow this pro players abuse a lot of the angle (illegally) of the serve in my opinion. Practically all the serves are illegal if I understood correctly the rules.
