How to Tip at an All Inclusive Resort | Should you Tip at an All Inclusive Resort | Tipping Guide

One of the biggest questions that we get is about how to tip at an all-inclusive resort, or even IF you should tip at an all- inclusive resort. So in this video I review some of the basic protocols when it comes to tipping at an all inclusive resort and how we personally choose to tip when we are on vacation. Tipping is not mandatory but remember you have the privilege of being on vacation and many of the workers that are making your vacation better do not get paid much hourly and rely on tips as a means of income. A little goes a long way in countries like Mexico and Dominican Republic! #travel #travelchannel #travelvlog

More than 20 years ago I was one of those hotels workers in a communist island of the Caribbean. I saved every single tip as my more precious treasure. Until one day it was enough to buy my exit. Today I have a nice life with my family in a free country. And of course I’m a good tipper. Tipping is not just helping a family to get a plate of food on their table. Sometimes is more than that. You are helping to build a dream. Thank you and God bless you all.

Eek, following your guide my tipping would equal what I pay for a trip. Having so many friends that I met in my travels, they do say Americans are "over tippers". It's so important to show appreciation, but they don't need that much to feel appreciated when the American dollar does go so much further. It's great that if someone can afford those "guides", but recognize also, that they feel just as appreciated when given anything, and they see Americans coming from a mile away. They have no problem taking it, but you won't get neglected if you don't. Case in point, I tip housekeeping the end of my trip, because tipping is for good service, not to "convince" someone to give good service. I've never had a problem getting what I need. It's a touchy subject, and I recognize that.

That is one thing i love about Sandals all inclusive. The only ppl you are allowed to tip are...spa, private transfer and your butler. They are the most friendliest ppl too. Been to over 5 sandals locations and 90% of the staff have 10 plus years of service. That is one of the main reasons we stay at all inclusive, is to enjoy vacation and not have to pull out your wallet. Since tipping is the norm in Mexico, we will definitely make sure we have tip money! Thank you for such great advice!

Very good video. A couple of things I do a bit different are tipping the housekeeping staff daily because sometimes they will change over during your stay. You could tip one well and the next person nothing. I put a few dollars in the fridge as well because they are usually different from housekeeping staff. I will tip the landscapers as well, but sometimes I will take the cold sodas from my mini bar and share those on a hot day. Love the idea of separating your daily tips just to keep an idea of how much you're using.

One thing I want to mention about tipping ahead of time to the maid cleaning your room is, before you do that you should always talk to your maid to find out what days she’s off.. most people do a 7 day all inclusive on avg I’d say so in most cases I personally have had a different paid for 1 or 2 days of my stay.. I personally wouldn’t want to leave a big tip out for a week stay to find out that for the rest of my stay it’s going to be someone else, and having to tip again! 😊

I recently went on vacation to Punta Cana, and tipping was one of my big concerns, considering that I live in a commonly non tipping country/culture like Chile. I saw this and other videos (all made by americans) to get some guidelines regarding tipping. The first conclusion is that americans tip excessively, and for non US people its almost impossible to follow their example. The second conclusion: you don't have to tip everybody, unless you have plenty of money to burn. If that's not the case, I recommend prioritizing your tips. I prioritized barmen and the house staff, specially because I requested diet sodas in the bars & for my room minibar (for that I daily left a note and some money). Both worked well, because they went out of their ways to accomodate me. In fact, after I started tipping the housekeeping, when I returned to my room after a day on the beach, there were flowers all over the bed. I didn't tip waiters/waitresses because their service quality, which was ok, didn't improve much even when people gave them money.

  • @jisa39

What these kind of videos show, more than guidelines regarding tipping in an all inclusive hotel, is the cultural differences between different peoples. The author of this video thinks that not tipping it's a problem, and it seems that's the way most americans think about this matter. But, actually tipping or not tipping it's not a problem, it is, ultimately, a choice. If you go to this kind of establishments you are absolutely free to tip or not. It is not an obligation, it is not a violation of any rules, and it is certainly not a problem. It is your choice, and you should never feel bad for exercising your freedom.

Very informative video. It does remind me why most of our best experiences and least hassle all-inclusive vacations have been at resorts where no-tipping is the firmly controlled policy - overall those resorts tend to be more expensive (in the case of Beaches often double the price of other family resorts), but not having to constantly fumble with cash for tips all day long is a huge plus. It is also the case at least in the DR and Mexico, everyone has their hand out and if you don't tip well the service you receive will be very sub-par.

The tipping culture in the US is out of control.. People want tips for everything... the employer employs this person to do a job.. the employee then carries out their duty for an agreed wage. Its not people's responsibility to top up their income with continuous tips. I will tip when on vacation, but nowhere near $100 a day. I've paid to stay at the hotel.. the hotel can pay their staff. Also, with these all inclusive resorts I won't, and alot of other people are the same, even carry cash around with me... why would you? You've already paid for everything 💁‍♂️

@@3Days3Noches that is NOT our problem! We paid big bucks for a 7 day vacation, worked all year for one! We aren't gonna throw a $5 daily because the cleaner has to put new towels in, or front desk checked us in... that is just being silly with your hard earned cash. Maybe there are a lot of filthy rich people out there that can but don't ruin it for the rest of us. Many times this $2000 all inclusive is all we can afford and it took is 3 years to save up for it. How dare you bully people into giving what they really don't have! Let me be clear i don't tip but i still get great service always, no issues. I say thank you and that's it. My water is still filled at the buffet, my bed is made and no one cares for tips but only the crazy tipper that tips walking around waiting to be robbed with their "barrel of tips" in her purse... hey sir here's a $1 hey here is somemore money... look how rich i am... omg we already paid to be there! This kind of videos are specially targeted for the US. In the rest of the Americas there's a different reality. I'm from Chile, which is mostly a non tipping country, and have been twice in Mexico, without tipping, and still got a great service. Besides if you are not from the US, the task of gathering monumental amounts of small dollar bills may seem easy for an american, but for someone outside the US it's hard, cumbersome and very expensive. Don't forget that the only strong currency in the Americas is the USD, and maybe the CAD as well. Outside the US, the exchange rate is brutal, and makes tipping a very expensive gesture. And tipping people with our domestic currencies (CLP in my case) is useless, because they most likely wont be able to exchange to their local currency. Tipping is a good thing, and the people that work in all inclusive hotels deserve whatever monetary kindness you can give them. But it's a different situation between US & the rest of the Americas, where most people may want to tip, but just can't afford it.

The only people I tip are spa staff if I get a massage, porters who handle my bags at the airport, and the taxi driver to the resort. If I wanted to tip I would stay at a regular hotel and pay everything out of pocket when I get there.

Great video with good guidelines. I wish more people would take your advice since it is sad to say there are a lot of folks who don't tip at all when staying at all inclusives. I travel solo to Mexico at least twice a year and budget my tip money right into the cost of my trip. One thing I might add to your review is to make sure the American dollars, five, tens and twenties are bills that are in good shape. For example, not ripped or torn, written on or defaced in any manner. The folks you tip with them have a hard time converting them if they are not in good shape. It makes their lives easier and the money you leave greatly appreciated even more!

@@3Days3Noches Hi there, just got back last night from the Hilton in Playa del Carmen, my favorite Mexican resort, and had a wonderful solo 10 days. Agree that everyone is entitled their opinion but there is no way I could not have expressed my thanks and gratefulness for the employees of this fine resort without leaving gratuities for their services and dedication to making sure every guest has the best time. It's the little gestures that tug at my heart. Like when the room service waiter brought me a pot of coffee and on the tray was a beautiful rose bud, probably left over from the last wedding, but who cares, it was the thought that counted. It may be just me, but I couldn't live with myself if I didn't return in kind something to make his day a bit brighter. To each his own, but I believe these people, many who live way below the poverty level, deserve the monies they are given in appreciation for their service. ❤

Good video, I was just looking for this kind of information. Americans definetely have a tipping culture. I'm chilean (which makes difficult and rather expensive the task of gathering lots of 1-5 USD bills) and going to Punta Cana on june 2023, and wasn't able to find, let's say, reliable information on the subject. I think, though, that it would be good to research beforehand if the hotel that you are going to has a "no tip policy", or maybe it is frowned upon. For example, my nieces went to Punta Cana on 2021 and they saw that the hotel restricted tips to the staff, and also advised them not to tip. Despite that, they had a great time. Personally I've been in Cancun/Playa del Carmen twice, and didn't tip, and I had a great time and fantastic service. But it's a good thing to consider, and this video helps a lot to to do that.

Very helpful video! Thanks. You reminded me of a few people I would otherwise have overlooked when I go next week. I think tipping as you go- including housekeeping- is a better way. If I check out on Friday, for instance, and that happens to be the day off for the person that has been taking care of my room every day of my stay, that housekeeper gets screwed if I leave the tip when I check out. Same thing with the other people at the resort. Tipping at the end of your stay might seem more convenient, but it's not more convenient (or fair) for the people you are actually trying to thank by tipping.

Because the maids can change depending on the day of the week we usually ask them in advance what day they work until and tip her according to that. This way we remember to tip the new maid on the day she comes in. We also always have that 1 bar in the day and 1 bar at night we end up going to the most often and those guys we usually tip well. It's made a huge difference for our experience! lol last vacation the bartender had the shots ready for us when he saw us walking towards the bar! It was an excellent touch! The mini fridge stocker is also a MUST! We try to catch him on day 2 or 3 and ask for particulars, then he ends up always leaving you what you want all week.

I find that the extraordinary amount of tipping is laborious and one can nickel and dime oneself by the end of the trip. The staff is not paid well, but where does all that money go that we pay for the "all inclusive" resort? Almost sounds like one has to bribe the attendants to guarantee good service. But we have followed your advice and gotten plenty of $1, and $5 bills to make sure we tip properly. Thanks for the heads up! :)

Housekeeping doesn’t get the same rooms everyday!!! If you tip up front you’ve only tipped one person, not the people actually cleaning your room! We tip $5/day and $1-2/night for turndown plus $1-2 for people who refill the minibar. And don’t forget to tip room service at an all inclusive! We figure $100/day plus $100 for extras so $500 for a 4 day 3/night stay. We are fortunate to be able to travel and experience these amazing places. The people who live and work in these areas aren’t as blessed. We once tipped the band in the lobby $5 when they played out favorite song. For the rest of our stay they played that song or just a few bars from it every time they saw us!

I do have a silly question, I'm sure we'll be drinking throughout the day all over the resort, we'll be in bathing suits all day, I'm not schleping dollar bills in my bikini top. There isn't anything to sign since you're at an all inclusive, do you come back at the end of the day and tip? How does everyone do this?

Tipping is a mindset of people from the USA. People from Europe don't tip unless at a resturant. On a all-inclusive you might want to leave a tip in the room for the housekeeping staff, but generally you've just paid thousands for an 'all-inclusive' service. Even curise liners are not incluing tips as part of the package.

Just left Mexico a day ago and can advise anyone going now that the peso is better for tipping at the moment because the exchange rate is not the best for the US dollar right not. One dollar at a good rate used to be worth 20 pesos but now comes in at 17.5. It can seem so confusing so peso or dollar it's the thought that counts when you leave a tip. However, if you want to do pesos, before you leave on your trip you can order them from your bank here at home and avoid the hassle of exchanging monies when you get to Mexico. Also note if you are buying something while you are there with a cc card and they ask you peso or dollars? always say pesos for a better rate with your cc company.

The only thing we bring that is valuable is money and passports which are both easy to hide pretty well. amzn.to/43sSNN6

I feel like such a jerk... But, I feel like when I hear "All-inclusive", I feel like the price for everything is all included. I do not tip when I go to resorts or on cruises. I have YET to receive any terrible service from not tipping. I have also tipped in the past and felt my service did not change. So I just opted not to tip.

Me too. She's just being silly. I have gone to many all inclusive reports and have never tipped at all. I get great service. I don't think I'm better than others that i have to throw money as tips to make sure they are doing their job. This is a filthy rich lady that loves to throw money. Typical american white woman. I am not carrying tips to throw at everyone. You do not have to tip. You paid and save your money and enjoy. Vacations aren't cheap.

@@brunalima5699 yup exactly and many times it literally says on the website 18% gratuity included in the price all inclusive, its a great feeling not to carry any money around and eat, drink and have fun without acting like daddy warbucks throwing $1 at everyone you meet. Tipping is silly especially when you are not expected too. All it shows is a rich person who is trying to buy love and respect for a small smile. Very sad. Vacations are already paid for just enjoy them. I have never tipped and get better service than her!

Thank you for sharing this helpful video. It's a good jumping off point for us to gage what to tip depending on who and what type of service. Do you have any recommendation for tipping Butler's? Our room coming up at Xcaret Hotel Mexico/Arte has a Butler! Who will help make reservations for us at the restaurants we want and the parks we want to go to and set up private travel and so on. We may use their service once, or not really at all, or many times depending on what we decide to do on vacation. Just not sure what to tip if we do require their service. Any helpful advice? Thanks in advance!

All inclusive to me means: air, transportation, hotel, entertainment, food and booze,. But tips are always extra that you should share with the staff. Share the wealth or don't go on vacation.
