Great work guys! Ive got 100 hours practice and still only get it right half the time. Very...delicate frustrating process ive found. You should do a teach and correction show with someone who has never tig welded.

Great video , one thing any beginner should know. Just because you can mig weld doesn't mean you're going to be able to pick up a tig and start welding like a pro. I think that's why so many people just give up and return their welder so thinking there's something wrong with it. It takes several hours of practice. I've had my tig for 15 years and if I need something important welded I call a friend that's NASA certified to weld it. I would suggest taking a TIG welding class or have someone that knows how spend a few hours watching you and help get you started in the right direction. Don't give up

Thanks for sharing that advice. With a little help, TIG welding is fairly easy to learn. But, like you said, without help, people often do get discouraged. I think the Eastwood TIG 200 AC/DC is a great machine, especially for beginners, because it's very easy to use and get the proper adjustments for good welds. The chart makes it very easy. From there, it's just honing your technique.

Damn I'm old. My first aluminum TIG was an old Sears Colormatic (still have it-rebuilding it to stock new condition purely stick again - fun project) 2-phase 220V (guessing it's 60Hertz) stick machine switched/wired to AC with a bulky 3 hose TIG gun (ON-OFF) cooled by a Glucose tank I made (did not have floor drains or anyway of just running off a hose or sink) and a large fish tank pump (Also a Sears LOL) running threw a large after market Ford transmission cooler with a Dodge Aries 12volt fan run off a battery with a 12volt battery charger. And back then all We had was pure tungsten and had to scratch start,no HF then LOL ! And I don't know why You say if Your just starting out there's a power and use chart to look at. I have been a heavy duty mechanic and welder/fabricator for 32 years and I still look at the charts for help !

Right so let's start at the very basic's... I assume from watching a couple of your video's that basically unlike MIG where the wire actually touches the grounded piece I think that the technique here is to have the electrode a minimal distance away from the grounded piece and the "Flash-over" form's an arc which in turn melt's / heat's the metal up to a super-heated state ( I assume from an RF Radiation kind of effect), where the contact of the filler rod melt's the filler rod and that form's an intermetallic bond between the 2 metal's, if I'm working by the correct song sheet then could you give some guidance as to standard "clearance" (or gap's) between the grounded work piece and the electrode of the TIG gun, I have done quite a bit of MIG welding (self taught, after a quite considerable quantity of steel and stainless test / practice pieces, and I'm up to a reasonable standard), but I'm wanting to expand into TIG as I consider it to be much neater, cover's most alloy's, more versatile and now that I've found myself at the stage of needing to weld much heavier pieces it should in theory be more adept. could you please if possible expand further upon the theory behind the art or have I about covered it in " lay-man term's"

When you set up your amps on the machine and the pedal which source control is it drawing from the pedal or the machine? Example if I set my machine at 110 and my pedal at 100 does it read the max on the pedal or the Machine? The reason I ask after my aluminum got hot it melted before I added filler at 100 on the pedal..but the machine was set at 110.Also no matter how many times I sharpen my tungsten to a point the second it hits the aluminum it is balling up on AC setting .What am I doing wrong or is it normal ?

  • @eastwoodco

Did you make sure you switched the machine to use the foot pedal? There is a switch on the face of the machine for "Foot Pedal" and "Panel Control". If it's set to Foot Pedal, the Foot Pedal is the only heat setting that matters. Does this answer your question?

It probably has tons of oil embedded in the pores. Try baking it in the oven for 350F for a couple hours to burn off the oil, then clean the area mechanically (using a scotchbrite conditioning pad for example) before doing a final solvent wipe. (I know this is 5 years old, just giving an example technique for someone reading).

  • @eastwoodco

MIG welding a roll cage is far easier to “glue” the parts together but a properly prepared (nicely mitered and beveled joints) and welded cage with a TIG is equally as strong. It is the best as far as final visual appearance but that’s only if you’re VERY comfortable with TIG welding. Thanks, Matt/EW
