I didn't know you could make a bowline this way! Always made a bowline and used that loop to attach it to the tree with a slipknot. This is so much easier! Quick and to the point as well. Thank you so much.

  • @Limicola1

I agree it's pretty cool but you can do the same thing tying the bowline conventionally. Make a "six" (a loop) in the standing part (just turn the standing end to make the loop), run the bight end around the tree, pass it up through the loop in the standing part, then run it around the standing part (left or right--it doesn't matter) and back down through loop. It's "the rabbit jumped out of the hole, ran around the tree, and jumped back down the hole" method, but the "tree" is the standing part and the loop that goes around the post is the bight end.

Oh my! I have watched so many videos about this just so I could hang a short clothes line between two posts and the directions were always so confusing. The line seemed tight till I tried to hang something on it. The tightness was done by pinching fingers and pushing or pulling the line taught ....in any case. I’m in my mid 70’s. My fingers aren’t doing that. Then I saw your video with the pulley. Wow. I just hung two short lines in my yard and the sheets aren’t touching the ground! And it was simple....not “over this way and under that way and around and through”....whew! Women just make it easy. Thanks so much.

I saw this very useful tip for the trucker's hitch. When tying the truckers hitch, pass the working end through the tensioning loop twice rather than just once. Now when you pull it tight, the doubled line will lock allowing you to keep your tension while tying off the hitch. When releasing knot, just pass the line back through the tension loop once and pull hard. This will release it allowing for easy untying.

Guess it's a matter of preference. The self-locking trucker's hitch is a little harder to pull tight due to the same friction that locks it in place. So you keep the tension easier, but possibly build up less of it. Good to know both and maybe even chose depending on the situation.

Ah! Bless you! When I teach knots I ask if any of the folks know the bowline or remember something about a rabbit and a tree. If they don't or seem shaky, I teach it this way instead. Some still prefer what I call the "boy scout" way of learning/doing it, though I call it a snake, not a rabbit! I think for those that really struggle with knots it still has merit! I've been tying it this way for almost 30 years now and definitely prefer it over the traditional method. I'm happy to spread the magic. I recently heard a great name for it: the "snap" bowline.

@@dirtyslag2612 and Robert, you are both spot on! I mostly taught folks that didn't want to learn for the first 25 years or so (in the military at SERE school and in wilderness therapy) and now get to teach those that do. It makes a world of difference! Thank YOU for watching and sharing your thoughts!

If you put line twice in the loop for hitch it holds itself and you don’t need to pinch line to make loops. Best video I’ve seen

My Dad taught me this knot - I’ve used it a lot - finally a name to it - I like the little underhand loop for securing the main loop. And the sticks for the tarp loops - lol - love it - Thanks

I like it! The loops through the grommets with the sticks was awesome. I had to rewind that first knot that magically became a bowline three times! It was like a magic trick. Thanks, you are cool. First time here.

Excellent presentation! Thumbs up for the safety provision to make sure the final slip knot gets secured. MAN! No one, ever, considers it in KZread vids! No one, ever, considers the possibility of a moron untying the slip not, or, EVEN worse, someone untying it ON PURPOSE. Cheers!
