How to Tie the Māori Hei Toki Lashing by TIAT

The Hei Toki Lashing is how the Māori (indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand), tie off small highly polished rectangular blades. Initially used as woodworking tools, Māori hei toki blades, and the lashings that accompany them, have become highly prized pieces of art, sought after the world wide. Video production by JD of Tying It All Together.

Nice see in the end that the core was removed. Why does he give info at the end? I guess cause he does everything different. I still will choose TIAT vids though. I'll just look at the ending before I start.

It's probably a really good demo - some of your others are brilliantly simple but you've made this one for the adzes (hei toki) really complicated maybe it's because I've used this wrap about a thousand times and there's always a hole for the cord and a carved indentation to work to. :)

why not come up with a way to loop cord from the shoulders of the bottle, down around the bottom, ensuring that the lashing can NOT be easily pulled off? IE, Filling the bottle with alcohol, and inserting and removing from your pocket?

In theory, you could use this to wrap a tank top on someone, substitute the top rubber band with the person's teeth biting down on to the top working end.. but finishing the tank top before the person turns purple would be the real challenge.. perhaps if they stood on a turn table. hmm....

and this stays on that bottle? I would think since the glass bottle is so smooth and slick and the cord is also fairly slick that all that work would just slip right off. Please tell me before I invest in a bottle of booze that all that work won't be wasted?

If the flask can be roughed up that'll help both the rope and the glue to stick. This wrapping wouldn't make a bad grip for a bottle if it could be further secured.

Yeah, I kept waiting for some kind of interlacing to increase the surface tension..didn't see that happen..I'll probably experiment with another lacing pattern that crosses over AND under itself for a better grip and use rawhide or something that isn't slick.. maybe even sandpaper the bottle too.

I'm from NZ. Although the Maoris were there before the white man showed up technically they aren't indigenous as they too arrived by boat. I think that the only thing indigenous to NZ is rain forest(now gone due to cattle and sheep farming and what remains is soon to be opened up to the Mining industry) and birds.
