How to Tie the Māori Hei Toki Lashing by TIAT
The Hei Toki Lashing is how the Māori (indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand), tie off small highly polished rectangular blades. Initially used as woodworking tools, Māori hei toki blades, and the lashings that accompany them, have become highly prized pieces of art, sought after the world wide. Video production by JD of Tying It All Together.

What a great and easy to follow video! Thanks so much for the inspiration. All the best from Canada.
You can't imagine how pleased I am to see a knots video where the hands, fingers and finger nails doing the work on camera are CLEAN. LOL Great job, thanx for sharing.
Thanks so much for uploading the video! The end result looks so fancy but its so simple.
brilliant video

Very jazzy, reminded me of Hooteroll!
I love the music you use in your videos.
glad to see my culture is spread all around the world :D

Very nice weave. Thanks for sharing.
@TyingItAllTogether ...by the way thanks aplenty for your videos! I really respect what you are doing!!!! You should consider authoring a DVD if you haven't done so already.

Wow I like a lot.
I may have to try this on my trumpet as valve guard lashing.
Kick ass tunes.
The knot is amazing, and the music has that whole "Eminence Front" feel to it....

Love that audio track!
@TyingItAllTogether I make bone (and soon fimo) pendants so this lashing would look great on them. Where I might be able to find out how these notches you mentioned work please?
I have a ton of sisle and green jute twine..im gonna try this on a knife sheath I have...
How can you do a mod on it?mine was like this, but it was just 1 string for the stone and necklace tie and i just can't figure it out. I'm back at chile so there's no one to teach me this kind of ties
dude respect! is there a knot you can't do? I am a big fan!
Hi I brought my boyfriend a awesome greenstone fish hook, but the lashing came undone and I am having trouble re lashing, it has 2 pointy sides at the top and not sure how to get this done, I understand the way you did this video, but this hook I got is not square at the top, I could pod send you pics of what it looked like before the lashing came off, really need help, want him to be able to wear it again. Thanks let me know if you can help me out. Thanks Jude kiwi
Nice see in the end that the core was removed. Why does he give info at the end? I guess cause he does everything different. I still will choose TIAT vids though. I'll just look at the ending before I start.
what stops it from sliding up the bottle
never mind any of that! What's the name of and where can I download this funky music???????????????
It's probably a really good demo - some of your others are brilliantly simple but you've made this one for the adzes (hei toki) really complicated maybe it's because I've used this wrap about a thousand times and there's always a hole for the cord and a carved indentation to work to. :)
@3pushesbullet also was wondering that
Could this be done or had anyone tried to do this on a military one quart canteen?
why not come up with a way to loop cord from the shoulders of the bottle, down around the bottom, ensuring that the lashing can NOT be easily pulled off? IE, Filling the bottle with alcohol, and inserting and removing from your pocket?
In theory, you could use this to wrap a tank top on someone, substitute the top rubber band with the person's teeth biting down on to the top working end.. but finishing the tank top before the person turns purple would be the real challenge.. perhaps if they stood on a turn table. hmm....

Hahahaha I was think similar the Africans do a baby sling I was thinking it maybe similar to this
Are you in New Zealand? Can I contact you? I have a project that requires special decorative Maori lashings
and this stays on that bottle? I would think since the glass bottle is so smooth and slick and the cord is also fairly slick that all that work would just slip right off. Please tell me before I invest in a bottle of booze that all that work won't be wasted?

If the flask can be roughed up that'll help both the rope and the glue to stick. This wrapping wouldn't make a bad grip for a bottle if it could be further secured.

Yeah, I kept waiting for some kind of interlacing to increase the surface tension..didn't see that happen..I'll probably experiment with another lacing pattern that crosses over AND under itself for a better grip and use rawhide or something that isn't slick.. maybe even sandpaper the bottle too.
ball into the bottle "bola dentro da garrafa" Excuse my mistakes in English because I am Brazilian and I do not speak your language very well. I wish you would show us how to knot ball into the bottle. thanks

I'm from NZ. Although the Maoris were there before the white man showed up technically they aren't indigenous as they too arrived by boat. I think that the only thing indigenous to NZ is rain forest(now gone due to cattle and sheep farming and what remains is soon to be opened up to the Mining industry) and birds.
Increase video speed by 1.5 or you'll go insane..
Hey JD, would using some really thin, clear two-sided tape also work instead of tack spray?
thumbs up if ur a kiwi
