Just purchased a brand new UTV. This is the best video at this point since I’m looking at buying a single axle utility trailer to haul my new toy. This video is for all new owners like myself who have no formal training on topics like this.

I've been riding dirt bikes, three wheelers and quads almost all my life and never had issues with straps. I bought a SxS last year and every trip I took at least one strap would fall off. I watched this video before I went to Sand Mountain this weekend (just got back), didn't lose 1 strap! Thank you.

Hey thanks so much for this guys. Since watching this I have tied down my RZR like you suggested and I feel better knowing my car is secure on the trailer. While driving down the road I can feel a difference in the trailer and the motion of the car. It is like the car floats on the trailer and allows the suspension to work. Thanks ✌🏼

Just a thought.... I believe in always releasing the park brake and or take out of park, ( if equipped), after attaching a strap or two. Then after all strapped down reset the park brake or put back in park. Doing this there is then no tension on the drive line.

Learned this a number of years ago. Was in a remote area and had a leaf spring on the trailer snap. Managed to block the trailer up to get it home but found our straps kept falling off due to the exaggerated movement of the atv chassis. More than usual. That’s how I learned tracks with tire straps are the only thing that make sense.

Thanks for the video... ill be tying to the lower arms and furthest outside radius rods from now until I get my e-track installed and can strap my tires down.

I run e-track down the entire length of the trailer deck and from there figure out where the buggy needs to sit and put e track chokes in front of the front tires, from there I used 2" e track straps over all four tires to hold it in place. makes for a very solid foundation and the unit never moves and no shock load is placed on the suspension

i equipped my trailer with TRAC system, it was rather inexpensive- probably cost me less than $150 to be able to tie down both of my UTV's with all needed parts using several 12" long track's and the clip in straps for the TRACKs, all available at my local auto parts store (NAPA). they're both tied down using the tires. the only thing i can advise is is on a wood deck trailer to make sure that at least one pair of bolt holes in each track is bolted to a frame support under the wood, or to use through bolts through the wood with fender washers on the underside and nylock nuts on the bolts so they don't come loose. the other nice thing about doing it this way is that the free end of my straps can be placed under the strap between the strap and the tire and as things are cinched down they hold the free end quite nicely and neatly.

I'm using dog bones for strapping the tires. You can tie down securely and it only takes minutes. Going around the inside of the tire instead of over the top gives you a better hold in case you lose air pressure.

Criss crossing the straps is a bad idea. Bleeping Jeep channel did a great demonstration showing why it's a bad idea. (Straps interfere and if one strap fails the entire strap system fails) Otherwise this is great vid! I struggled finding good info on strapping UTVs with a mixture of advice. I finally installed e tracks on my trailer with straps over the wheels and that has been my favorite UTV accessory investment yet.

As for the tongue weight, it really depends on your configuration, payload, etc. For example, my f250 diesel payload is such that my talon goes all the way forward on my dual axle trailer. There are some great KZread videos showing why you want the weight as far forward as you can, relative to your setup.

I can see what you're saying about maybe straps tearing with the bouncing, but I would be astonished to see any issues with a little pre load on the suspension with chains and binders. You had a couple of questions about +1 etc forward arms to clear larger tires, You mentioned that you didn't mind them as long as they were a quality part. The reason Im asking is that I just picked up a 2018 X3 XDS(64") with brand new wheels and tires( 0 dirt miles less then 5 road miles) The tires are System3 RT320 33x9x15 mounted on STI HD9 5/2 offset, at full lock in the garage there is only about .75" of clearance between the rear of the tire and the fire wall. My concern is that it will rub during articulation. So is it possible to install a quality set of forward arms on my X3, if so who would you recommend on the quality parts.

  • @ShockTherapyllc

    @ShockTherapyllc

    4 жыл бұрын

We run 33's on our X3 but it is a 72 with zero clearance issues. I guess you might be pretty close on the 64". I would suggest anything from Highlifter if you can't get some from S3 or Cognito first.

  • @marlboroman71818

The easiest way and what works the best and fastest for me is to pull the front wheels to the front rail on the trailer and hook two straps to the frame about halfway of the vehicle and tie down to the front of the trailer. There is nothing wrong with tying down to a part of the vehicle that is suspended. As long as you compress the suspension to put enough preload it wont go anywhere or have any suspension travel that creates slack in your straps. Also if you strap both front and rear you don't even need to compress the suspension because you are using tension on both sides of the frame to prevent the vehicle from moving and you can have all the suspension travel you want and it will never move. You really shouldn't tie down to the A Arms, Polaris actually tells you not to. In fact all manufacturers have tie down holes on the frames of SxS in front and rear. The correct way is to take two straps and tie the rear down a few feet behind it and then take two more and tie the front down a few feet in front of it. Tire straps are a bad idea because you can loose air pressure.

To get tongue weight, measure height of pickup rear bumper with empty trailer attached. Then load your UTV and drive it up to where your pickup bumper is an inch lower. If you don't like the way it handles, pull forward until you have another inch. But an inch is a good rule of thumb.

Understood. When I haul actual road legal cars, the locking steering wheel keeps that from happening as often. Or when I haul straight axle vehicles like JEEPS, Landcruisers and the like it works great. But seeing the UTVs and SXS' mostly have independent systems, I can see where the toe effect would compromise the tie downs.

I have a 72'' car & a 64'' my 72'' fits over my E track and I tie down by the tires. My 64'' is obviously to narrow and have to tie down the chassis and not at a good angle for the E track. Is there anything on market allow me to tie down the 64'' to E track and be able to keep the strap in line with the E track?

put a second set of e-tracks down to where you can tie down the 64 as well

Strapping to the control arm close to the hub makes perfect sense but wouldn't that put strain on the arm bushings?

Nope. Probably 10% of the stress that they see when you drive it

When I purchased my RZR it came with the trailer. The previous owner used ATV Mighty Tite system. Taking your comments, this should not be used correct?

I don't like that system. If it surrounded the front tires and held them tight in front then I am in. But not like I see in their video.

You are correct that the arms can take quite a bit of load, can’t say if they’re designed to take load on a small point when they’re tied down like that though. I’d prefer to tie vehicle down per the manufactures recommendations. I was always taught not to ever tie down a vehicle by the control arms because they weren’t designed to take load like that.

So confusing because Polaris themselves say not to tie to the front control arms, but it seems like the best option.
