    Sweet! Love it. Just bought one. We had one for years in our tackle stash from the early days when dad was still keen and he apparently used it a few times successfully. Always felt something was left unfinished though as I never really understood the tool. Had a good rummage for it in the garage loft tonight and sadly it appears to be long gone :( Even found our old bread punches so it must have been lost at some time (otherwise it would have been with the bread punches). Really cool to see you can still get them and even better to see it being used, thanks :)

    Excellent indeed. Have used the hook tyer in tha past but your tip about keeping the shank at an angle and ''holding'' the tag end is so helpful . 50 years ago a friend and I would have a competition to see who could hand tie a 20 behind our back.......long gone. LOL

    Just realised i have spent 50 yrs doing it wrong! LOL. If only angling times had been able to show this back in 1974, i would have landed a lot more fish in my life rather than looking at a pigs tail where the hook should be!. Thankyou, excellent video.

    I've tied my hooks by hand for years now, but it's getting a little fiddly as age creeps in. My hook tier tool is nearly as old as me, and I'm just starting to use it. This video is brilliant for me, so easy to tie a safe knot that won't lose a fish maybe costing me money. Thanks very much for your efforts.

    Thank you very much for this video. I used the matchman hooktyer about 40 years ago with no problems. However 40 years later I have tried using it without success. This video has helped tremendously and the little tricks of shank back from the vertical is brilliant. So thank you again.

    I’ve been tying my own spade hooks for years and was taught to pass the line down the shank, I’ve not really had a problem with this method but it’s made me think about the way you’ve tied it, whether it’s stronger and also which side my line is facing off the spade. You’ve give me some homework mate. 😅

  • @AverageAngler

    @AverageAngler

    The line must come off the front of the spade or you will lose more fish. As for wehter its stronger I couldn't say for sure.

    Do mine slightly differently and even though I'm right handed I hold the tyer in my left. Some folks whip down the hook but I go up like you. When releasing the hook, grab it and pull to release the line from the sliding wire. If you pull the line above the spade you will get tiny kinks. I don't lean my back but the way I place the hook in the clamp and the way I start winding always makes the line come off the front of the spade.

  • @AverageAngler

    @AverageAngler

    3 жыл бұрын

    That's a good point about grabbing the hook when releasing, I missed that on the video. I did several takes and I did mention that on some 🤦. It's only a problem on 0.10 diameter lines or less I find

    Yes I have used it for lines like that in the past, but you need to be very careful, not to overtighten the wraps or you end up with pig tailing on the line.
