How to Throw and Trim an Angular Lidded Jar - Narrated Version
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
This weeks pottery video shows how I throw and trim some simple angular lidded jars. They're thrown from a high iron stoneware clay and are quite simple to finish as each part acts as a chuck for the other, which I explain more in the video.
0:14 - Throwing jar
3:47 - Weighing out clay for lids
4:39 - Adjusting callipers
4:57 -Throwing lid
7:42 - Trimming lid to fit jar
8:46 - Lid cross-section
9:15 - Trimming outside of jar
13:43 - Trimming base
15:13 - Stamping my maker's mark
15:35 - Finished examples
Thanks for watching and if you're got any further questions please leave it down in the comments and I'll do my best to reply.

What I so appreciate about you is that you don’t ridicule other artists because they make different choices and use differing techniques than you use. Certainly, you acknowledge those differences at times, but you don’t call other artists “silly”,”lazy”, et al. I watch numerous artists, and am sometimes saddened by their comments about other artists whose style/techniques differ. Sometimes it is more telling of one’s character by what is left unsaid than by what is spoken. Kudos to you. Thank you for allowing us to have a view into your pottery world.
I would love to see a video on different lids. Thank you for making these beautiful videos, I'm learning so much from you 🤗
Thank you very much for these tutorial videos.

Florian, Thank you as always for another wonderful, calming, contemplative video of your consummate craftsmanship! I would be very interested in seeing a video on your creative process. How you develop new pottery shapes and ideas, and how you refine them to the point where you are satisfied with them. I look forward to Sunday every week, because I know another of your vessels will be explained. Thank you again!
I'm so excited for all of the new shapes!!

I admire your dedication to the perfection of your craft. And thanks for these videos, they're as precisely made as your pots.
I really like the very clear and precise narration of your videos. As an amateur potter I have not only learned so much from your videos but I am inspired by your consistent attention to detail and quality. Thank you.
Thank you for making these videos! It helped me immensely to improve in many ways. You are the only person that finally was able to explain me spiral wedging, and I watched dozens of videos of it before. I would love to see a video of you making and trimming those larger angular vases that you have on your shelves)
It’s so satisfying watching you work. Thank you, Mr Gadsby. 😊
Superb video Florian 🙏

Hi Florian! Thanks for making these videos. Your voice is really lovely and the way you explain your process is easy to understand. I find a lot of comfort in your videos on nights that are restless. Thank you for that also. Your art is brilliant
I recently started taking a pottery class, and your videos have helped a ton. I love looking at all the unique shapes and pots you make.
i'm going to take some pottery lessons this year, and your videos have made the process a lot less daunting. thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience, i really appreciate your videos a lot!

Thanks for all these really well produced videos. As a KZread-taught potter, every perspective helps! You have so many excellent tips, and your work is gorgeous.
What a joy to watch.
Thank you for this beautiful and informative video. I'm ever impressed by your ability to remove thrown pieces without distorting the shape. I find this so challenging and often end up with oval-y rims on my cylinders. I'd love to see a video about your tips for removing thrown pieces.

You can use pot-lifters, which slide underneath , then lift up.
Another great video! The audio sounds 👌. I’d love a video on lids!

Thank you for the detailed video. Really appreciate the effort that goes into finishing every piece. Would love to see the finished product and get an understanding of what you mention about the way the glaze behaves on the lid.
There is a way to slightly dig in the corner of the 90 angle part of your flat rib, metal or wood etc. And bear in with the rib from the outside and slight finger pressure from the inside. Sort of like a 45 tool can tool off clay from the foot. This method stuff off a ledge. The gallery on a pot can also be thrown down this way. I have also seen a coil attached and thrown into place.
I like your channel really simple design and yet well done and good quality, besides the fact. Your channel is great positivity away from other negative things in here 💕 peace upon you and your family with love 🌺
Hi Florian! I think this is my first ever comment on a KZread video… Says a lot about how much I appreciate your videos. Just wanted to say that I really want to see a future lid-video. I’m a student of ceramics and I’m starting to understand how many different types of lids there are out there. Unfortunately, there is no comprehensive KZread video that explains the different styles or functions so if you would like to do that then I’m sure there are plenty of us who would appreciate it. Thank you so much for the work you put into making these videos! They are very helpful as well as relaxing.
Wonderful! Thank you so much.
yes please introduce the different lid styles :-)
I always tend to throw large feet deep enough to glaze. It leaves me an area of the piece where I can add a hidden customized message or image for those curious enough exam it thoroughly. That's my way of reminding the recipient it was hand made as much like you I get rid of my throw lines or hide them under glaze.

It’s not a bad decision to hide throw lines. They can produce a decorative feature. How a pot is made is an aesthetic decision. If throw lines were inside a bowl for instance, that would be undesirable. Imagine the bumpy ride of the spoon trying to scoop up soup!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Would totally be into a video focusing on different lids
Amazing video and very generous of you giving explanation in every detail step. I am curious about the clay you are using. so glad if you make a video about that in future
awosme
Everything you do interests me cutie! keep it up!!
I would love to see a lid video!
I love your work! I'm curious to know how you develop your forms - they're so elegant and balanced :)
Huge fan of your work Florian, it’s so cool to be able to see behind the scenes and the education you provide is invaluable! I’d love to know where you get your trimming tools/calipers.
Love your work and videos. Yes would like to learn how to make a stamp. Mine didn't turn out so good
I love this jar shape! What kind of clay do you use?
I really enjoy your videos. They are so precise and shows your love and comintment to your craft. I tend to be a minimalist in what I make and really appreciate your asthetic. Question, could you reveal where you get your large metal kidney and its size. Thank you,
@floriangadsby
3 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much William. It's an ancient metal kidney, handmade by Kevin Millward in Stoke I believe. I've been using it for years now and can't remember how it actually got into my hands. Wonderful tool and apologies for not being more helpful.
I would like to see alternative Lids, a bigger flange might allow it to sit down better.
I really like your work. Can you tell me about what materials you use? For examples which clay and which glaze. Thank you.
Would love a lid video. Pretty new to throwing, but something about the detailing of lids always evades me.
Thank you for the video, it was so informative! I was wondering if you leave the finished pots to bone dry with a lid on? I was recently making some lidded pieces and I was unsure whether to leave the lid on for drying, or just put it close to the pot but separate? Thanks again for the videos.
Amazing video! I can't wait for all the content you will post when you finally share your work on porcelain. (I just assumed that you would do that...) you do that right?
I would be interested in a video about lids.
Hey Florian, would you like to throw a Matcha Chawan Bowl for Matcha tea? Maybe with your typical glaze inside and the outside in silk white? 😎
Lids are very interesting to me, I'd love to see a more general video about them that includes different types and shapes :)
Do you show piece after its been fired? Very nice and great instruction

I'm afraid not! Although you'll find one finished example over on my Instagram if you scroll back a few weeks. I need to fire those seen made in this video. Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much Florian for these Videos. So helpful, and inspiring. Can you tell me what height and widthe the lidded angular jars are when you’ve finished trimming but before firing. It would be interesting to know what height you get from 450gof stoneware. Thanks, Tim
Would love to know where you got your wheel gauge? Is it bamboo? Beautiful work by the way. Your directions are so precise. Thank you

Thank you Kim! The gauge is made by my friend Darren Ellis, (www.darrenellispottery.com/shop/1-pointer), they aren't always in stock but I so recommend them, built to last.
Hello! What do you call the ruler/ leveler that you use when throwing? :) Love your works!
👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️
thanks for the detailed video! could you please let me know how many grams you use for the lids? thank you in advance!

Ah yes, I forgot to mention that, I believe they were thrown from 160 grams of clay. Thanks for watching!
What is that green glaze you used?
can you show us how you create your chucks?
what kind of trimming tools you use?
Florian, have you gotten around to making a video all about different lids?

Where can I buy your work?
How much clay do you use to throw the lids? :)

Hello! This is a high iron stoneware clay body manufactured for reduction firing in a gas kiln, or at least, that's when it gives its best results.
